Default SUBARU mechanic in Chicago (non dealer)

I wish I knew enough about my subie and had the tools and time to do everything myself, but I don't.

My question is... are there any mechanics in Chicago (besides the dealerships obviously) that know SUBARUs specifically and have experience with them?

Of all the halfway decent mechanics I'd dealt with since I got my WRX, most of them say they have very little experience with a car like mine, or Subaru in general, and that makes me a little nervous. I don't like that sometimes I (who doens't know very much) seem to know more than most mechanics who do the work on my baby.

I know 6 Star had some great mechanics that know Subaru's inside and out.

There are at least a good handful of good Subaru shops in the area. I have been to P&L and GRD also and they have some great people there too. Know you are going to get a good amount of replies on this subject.

What kind of work do you need done? I can work on subarus, so can alot of people here. You are asking a vague question since everyone one this site is a mechanic(cause we have tools) or tuner(cause we have a taxtic cable and a laptop).

Noah's time is wasted.....

well... I don't have my own tools, so any work that happens to pop up when friends aren't available (my '02 WRX bugeye has a rather 'abusive' past... so lots of things lately have been needed to keep her running).

I wish I had tools, but in the mean time, I want to know names of reputable places / specific mechanics who DON'T say "oh wow, a Subaru, hardly ever see these here... WRX? what's that?" (In other words, little to no experience with subies).

No one's time is wasted

I have a guy in Libertyville who works out of his garage - he has a "racecar" 06 STI and does great work at low prices. PM me if you want his info.

Hi there. I am wondering if you found a mechanic that specializes in Subaru without going to the dealer. I have a 2003 Sub Impreza that has been always taken to Evanston Subaru, but they charge a fortune. I am looking for a good mechanic that knows Subarus. Thank you. By the way, the current issue that I have is with the gas tank. It shuts off even though the tank is not full.

I can vouch for this guy too. Extremely knowledgeable and cheap. He did a downpipe, up-pipe, plugs and compression check for me. Then he took the time to load on my Stage 2 software and datalog on the road with me to make sure everything was up to snuff.

If you want to avoid all the shop drama he's your man. PM for details.

Maybe a strange question, but do you guys think it's worth taking a 16-year-old non-turbo daily to places like Six Star or P&L rather than to a dealer for regular maintenance?

You could watch some YouTube videos, have beer on hand and save some money doing it yourself. What do you need done??

Nothing special, just needed to change all the oils, fluids, etc. Already done everything at different shops. Will change spark plugs this weekend (maybe will have some beer as well).
The suspension is bad but I'll take care of it later because I exceeded my budget for this month

I also found such called "Subie Clinic" on Google maps. They are in Carol Stream. If i'll get a chance to check them out, will share my experience here.
