WRX vs Mustang GT (AutoX)
I know I'm comparing a rally car to a muscle car here, but these two are similarly priced and I plan on doing AutoX with whatever I get. Which of these in their current generation perform better in autocross stock for stock? What about with mods?

Best? Hmmm.. hard one.
GT is in FS. Should be faster than DS where the WRX is. WRX now has a 2.5L engine, and a host of other improvements. Hard call to predict hos well it's going to fare in DS this year... until someone runs them on a national level. |

With mods ... well, that depends on which mods and which class you want to prep for. Personally, I'd go with the subie as they naturally handle better in stock form.

Don't believe the hype. The new GT is a pretty good handler in stock form. They fixed a couple shortcomings of the car. Close enough to call it a dead even draw.
But modified, they're both in the same class. STU, ESP and SM. Depending on how much money I had, I'd pick the WRX in modified form over the GT at this point in time. The WRX would require less money to make much faster over it's stock form than the GT. --kC |

You're saying that it would be cheaper to make the 2.5ltr subie faster than a v8?

There's more to speed on an autcross course than horsepower ...

If you were to prep a car for stock class autocross I would rather the GT but for ESP, STU, or SM I would choose the WRX. The reason for choosing the GT for stock is that in FS the main competitors are other Camaros and Mustangs. In DS where the WRX has to play there is BMW 330s, Acura Integra Type R. Both of which handle worlds better. All people will have opinions for differing reasons. I ran my 2005 WRX in DS for half the season and hated how it ran. I then ran it in STX with only a few minor mods and it was worlds better but that didn't stop me from buying a 94 Miata and autocrossing in ES.

I think weight and size would be the downfall of the GT.

Stock class, no doubt the Mustang would be faster. Easier to learn how to drive at 10/10 too. People assume awd is easier to learn to drive fast but that assumption only works up to about 8.5/10. The WRX can win in DS if it has an experienced awd uber good regional or national level muckety-muck driving it.
Sure would like to stuff some 275's under an 06 WRX though. |

They may consider it "sportscar based" though |

The Mustang, contrary to popular belief, is NOT a sportscar. Never has been considered one either since it's inception. --kC |

With that said, over on the Mustang forums (my other car is a Mustang, so I browse over there, too) there are a number of guys who are very successful at the local level in Mustangs running SM (beating WRXs, STis, M3s, etc). Having auto-x'd both my Mustang and my Legacy, the Subaru is certainly easier to drive fast, and because I have a lot more experience in it, it is the faster car on an auto-x course. With more practice the Mustang would/should be capable of catching the Legacy. And without a doubt it's a helluva lot more fun to auto-x the Mustang - the sound, the torque, the tail-out scrabbling for traction. It's a blast.
