Default Subaru BRZ commands brisk sales in Japan as U.S. debut nears

Quote:
TOKYO -- Subaru’s BRZ sporty coupe, scheduled to go on sale in the United States April 20, is off to a brisk start in Japan, selling at a monthly rate quadruple initial forecasts.
Since the car’s Feb. 3 debut, Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. has sold 3,551 of the rear-wheel-drive BRZs, the company said in a statement today.
Subaru had forecast monthly sales of only 450 units in Japan. But it is not uncommon for newly released models in Japan to generate explosive orders at first before tapering off.
The sporty 2.0-liter, four-cylinder BRZ, which starts at 2.06 million yen ($24,830) in Japan for a stripped-down version, is the platform-sharing twin of Toyota’s Scion FR-S.
The U.S. monthly sales goal for the BRZ is 500.
Initial sales data suggest the BRZ is tapping a coveted younger customer base attracted to the car’s promise of sportier driving.
So far, nearly 60 percent of BRZ customers are under 40 years of age -- and two-thirds are picking the six-speed manual over the automatic transmission. The top-selling color is WR blue mica, in a nod to the signature hue of Subaru’s WRX performance line.

Myles has posted his review of the BRZ in General.

He said he was lead to believe there are some pillowball joints in the rear suspension.

I for one is very excited about this car and thankful for it to go into production though the mainstream demands more.

But this car is not for the mainstream, this is a poor man's Cayman, Elise... etc.

The driving reviews so far are very positive. I can't wait to drive one.

There's a rumor thread in the BRZ forum that pricing memos are circulating with a less than $400 more than the FR-S.

I sincerely hope so, and I hope it causes scion to go "oh ****" and reduce their price. Clearly the subaru (while uglier IMO) is better equipped, much more so than a measly $400.

Okay.. I'm a derp. I thought the FR-S's $24,930 price was before destination.. it isn't. So, the pricing difference is more like $1,100. Still, it's going to be a far better deal than the Scion (once you can start buying them under MSRP) unless Scion comes back with some heavy incentives.

$25500 for BRZ, $27500 for the limited. Yup, I think the BRZ Limited might be in my future.

$25.5k for the BRZ is a good deal considering the content. I'm not sure how well the FR-S will sell now.

Yup, the scion pricing makes less sense with the good, IMO, Subaru pricing.

100% agree. Scion needs to reduce immediately before they lose all sales.

That BRZ pricing is before the $750 destination charge.

And there will only be 6000 BRZs per year, after that people will have to go for the FR-S.

I would wager they will make as many BRZ's as they can.

Yes, the only "shortage" that will occur will be the first few months (pretty much the way it is with all hot new models)

I hope that's true, but I'm betting Toyota will do what it can to make the FR-S the volume seller of the two.

As you might expect of such a vehicle, the all-new Subaru BRZ will be built in extremely limited quantities. The rare driver lucky enough to own one will experience Subaru engineering distilled to its essence. If you want to be one of those drivers you'll need to move quickly. Contact your Subaru dealer now to learn how to get your name on the pre-order list.

It's hard to say. On one hand, the small difference in price might be worth it. However, with the BRZ being made in somewhat limited quantities (which, at $25k, isn't out of reach), it's likely that a lot of dealerships will mark up their cars, while the FR-S is not allowed to be marked up due to it being pure pricing (though dealerships might get around that by adding on aftermarket wheels or other non-Scion parts that are marked up). Obviously the smart thing to do would be just to wait until the hype dies down and the mark-ups are gone, but I figure some people will be in the market for a new car around the time of launch, so they may not have that luxury to just hold off.

Also, while a lot of people are quick to say that the BRZ comes with so much more for a rather small premium over the FR-S MSRP, my concern is that the pictures of the BRZ's interior that have come out (with the nicer HVAC controls) are usually for the BRZ Limited trim level, not the "standard" Premium. I haven't looked into it that much, but do both models of the BRZ have the exact same interior? I already know that the materials are different (I think the Premium has cloth while the Limited has something better, I think it was a suede/alcantara and leather combo) while the Premium has dual-climate control or something, so I'm curious if it has the same controls (but without dual-climate) or if its controls are similar to the FR-S's.

Same HVAC controls on the BRZ Premium as the FR-S. Interior wise the Limited adds lighted vanity mirrors on the visors, heated seats, dual zone HVAC, push start, and the leather/Alcantara seats. Beyond that I think the differences in the interior between the two trims is nil.

^ Thanks for confirming. I was hoping the BRZ would have the nicer interior in even the standard trim, but oh well. I can still justify the price difference in my eyes.

Yup. That and the choice of silver dash trim, or black. FRS gets black, BRZ gets silver.

If the silver is anything like my '05 Legacy... it will start to show wear disappointingly fast.

If I were in the market for this car... I might actually prefer the Scion. (I don't care a whit about the reputation of the brand's customers, I care about the merits of the vehicle.)

I think I like the Scion/Toyota angry fascia better, and have no wish for pre-installed pre-planned-obsolecense built-in NAV.

Push start can probably be retro-fitted, but I would probably have an AWD car for winter use, and that one would have the heated seats.

For a performance car... most of that Limited stuff can, and perhaps should probably be left for the other car in the garage. Maybe for the very, VERY few people who buy a BRZ as an only-car, would they want the full-boat options.

Leather steering wheel, and leather/alcantara seats might be nice. The push-button keyless entry and start might be a nice convenience detail touch but not a deal breaker. Dual-zone climate control, similarly, a nice touch... but in a small cabin airspace, probably not a deal-breaker.

Lighted vanity mirrors are hardly something to even think about. Fit one to the passenger side, if your girl REALLY wants one. If your girl is insecure about her looks, maybe NO mirror will help preserve her pleasant mood.

Use a paper map, use your smart phone, stand-alone GPS, GSM+GPS iPad or other tablet, or better yet... let yourself get lost, and explore some roads to get back. Drive the car.

The trunk might be a bit high in the driver's rear view, so a reverse camera might be a nice little thing to have... but there are rearview mirrors with rear camera screens inlaid inside them for that. Dash screen not needed.

What it needs more than most of those limited options, is a nice set of staggered wheels and tires. Save the package price for that.

While I agree that the Scion front end is a tad more aggressive (as it looks like it's frowning due to the shape of the trapezoidal air dam, contrasting to the "smiling" front end of the Subaru with the air dam being flipped), I would still lean toward the BRZ. I don't care too much about brand either (especially when they're about 95% identical), but I work in insurance, and I already know that the rates of the Scion variant will likely be higher than the Subaru's. Let's face it -- while the brand itself isn't the problem, it does attract a younger demographic, one that is statistically more likely to exhibit driving behavior that is riskier, and I don't doubt that will be the case. Given the recent release of the BRZ's MSRP, the price difference might not be that big of a difference to most of us (one that a lot of us can justify by the slight differences in hardware alone), the younger crowd (say, under 25 years old) may view that price difference as a bigger hurdle, so it's more of a reason why they'll go for the FR-S over the BRZ. Then ask yourself, who is most likely to get into an accident, the 20-something year old, or the person who is 30 or older? That's why rates go up.

While the aftermarket GPS navigation is a common alternative, a lot of states (such as California) ticket you for using a cell phone, whether talking, texting or navigating, so that may not be an idea option for everyone. While an in-dash navigation system is likely to become outdated, it's generally not a problem, unless you are constantly going to brand new locations, plus it's not like there are constantly new highways being constructed.

I always thought built in nav was ridiculous but when I went to upgrade my stereo there was one on sale so I got it, and now I would never go back. The little 4" screen on a phone just doesn't hold a candle to a full 6-7" screen and it's so much easier to have it always there without having to set something up. I don't realize how much I use the map when driving until I get in a car that doesn't have it and keep looking at the radio out of habit. Plus the touchscreen is great for all the bluetooth menus and everything you have to deal with now, trying to do that with a 2 line display and 6 buttons gets old fast.
