How much longer until we get automatic oil level sensors to replace our dipsticks? I always get back in my car thinking, "I probably read that wrong." Flame away.

1st post sir, 1st paragraph as wel

What is the best oil? Simply put, there is no best oil. While I stand by my premise that there is no best oil, I will offer recommendations as to what I have found are the "best oils":

Synthetic: Mobil Delvac 1 or Lubrication Engineers 8530 MONOLEC
Regular: Pennzoil or Havoline
Synthetic/Regular Blend: Motorcraft

I've been using Mobil 1 10W-30 High Mileage on my car for awhile now. I'm at 122,000 miles on my 2004 WRX. If I'm going to go to the track, I'll put 10W-40 High Mileage in.

It seems to work well for me.

Can someone put in a sticky the NEW filter we should be using and for each different motor.

I have a 2003 jdm ej205 - what filter should I be using?! I am so stumped with all of these various filters!

some say check your oil level when your motor is cold and others say check it at the pump when your oil is warm? does it really matter? i check mine on a cold engine and just make sure the oil is at the correct level

Anyone know if Castrol Syntech High Mileage 10-40 is any good?

Also any hear if the napa brand oil filters are any good. I was in looking and they had a cut away of the crappy FRAM oil filters and then a cut away of the napa oil filter and the napa one looked pretty dang good. The napa one is a little bit bigger then OEM and the filter element looks good.

Just wondering if anyone has hear any good or bad about the oil i mentioned or the filter

I believe you are referring to Castrol GTX High Mileage as there is no Syntec HM. If you want a good HM oil, go with Valvoline Max Life Synthetic or Synthetic Blend. I run the blend in my '00 RS and '99 Outback. No comment on the filter as I only run OEM or Purolator.

Napa oil filters are manufactured by Wix, IIRC. They are a good quality filter, but may not have the proper bypass pressure rating. With that said, I'd certainly use a Napa or Wix filter before using a Fram.

If I understand it correctly they bypass valve is just for if/when the filter doesn't flow enough, will that happen with a clean filter or one that is changed regularly?

A brand new filter....particularly one with a 10-12 psi bypass pressure like the WIX speced for the WRXes...is going to open up the bypass valve during a cold start and flow a large percentage of the oil for a few seconds completely unfiltered. Under certain WOT conditions, it may open up a bit as well....again even on a completely clean filter. Suby oil pumps can flow up to 12 gpm with a 85psi relief pressure.....hence the necessity for high bypass pressure filters.

By the way, only the higher end Napa filters (gold, etc) are made by WIX. The base model is not if I'm not mistaken.

I couldnt get the oil I wanted once and bought the MaxLife in the red jug.....and my engine seemed to really like it....quiet operation and zero consumption as far as I could tell over ~4500 miles it was in there......I refilled with it, and again, after ~5k miles, similar results.

A friend with a bugeye wrx tried it as it was CHEAP at wallyworld and had similar results and has continued to use it over the last year or so.

Scanned over this FAQ a few times and did some searches but Im still kind of confused when it comes to the oil weights. Could someone please explain to me what the numbers mean when referring to say 10W-30 or 5W-30? The only time that the weights are really talked about in this FAQ is about Alaska. My dad's tried to explain it to a few times in the past but I still don't really get it. What do each of the numbers mean? What relationship do the two numbers have to each other? Sorry if this has already been talked about but seeing as how this is the Oil FAQ, I figured I'd come here for the answer. (The answer is probably somewhere in this FAQ already and this is just one of those times where I read something and just skip right over it without knowing it, so if someone points it out to me, I know, I know, Im a n00b... )
