Per Consumer Report it is decent performance winter tire.
European (German) magazines tested Icept RS that seems to be unavailable in the USA.

tires only or winter package: Good for winter all seasons or snowtires + steelies?

Looking to get something in the tire department for my WRX. I drive 80+ miles a day on the highway. Snows quite a bit here in CO. Not sure if I want a set of dedicated snow tires and steel wheels or if I want a good all season like the Continental DWS.

Let me know what you think!
Where in CO? You should be fine with a performance winter in most of it unless your heading into the mountains often when it gets really ****ty up there. Then I would go with a studdless. I run dunlop 3D

Has anyone tried the BF Goodrich Winter Slalom tires? Curious what your thoughts are as I'm probably putting them on our 06 Outback on Wednesday. I picked up a set of OE WRX ~'03/'04 wheels, so 16 x 6.5, how odd is it going to look with 225/60/16's? A little too ballooney maybe? Should I do 215's instead? The car does not get driven aggressively or at highway speed very often, my wife stays pretty close to home with this car.

205/55-16 is what Subaru usually puts on that size wheel. You maybe could do a 215, but there's no point for winter tires.

I'm running 215/45/17's on stock 07 wheels on my 2011 WRX. I'd go with a 205 with that 16x6.5..

Needing some input as I am new to the Suby world. I live in N Cal and wanting to take my family to snow country this year. Will my stock all seasons tires be ok in area's where there is chain control with out me putting chains on? (R2 chain control areas) If the answer is no. And my manual states not to put chains on my car. Suggestions on what others use? Are there cables or spring chains which are ok to use? Also if I were to change tires and its not beneficial to change to snow/ ice, what all season with good snow ratings would be good to buy?

Thanks for answers!

Hope to get some clarity.

Driving a 2012 impreza sport limited.

According to Caltrans, R2 requires snow tires on 4/AWD vehicles, or chains. Also, the Auto Sock does not qualify as a chain.

Yes, but Caltrans definition of "snow tire" is any tire with the M+S symbol which includes all season tires.

Well for an update.... Got a set of Hankook IceBear 300's for a steal at a local tire shop! It snowed about 6in here over Christmas and I have been really happy so far with the snow performance. No sliding or issues stopping like the stock tires. I did quite a long drive over a pretty steep snowy highway with no issues at all. I was also able to drive right up my Grandparent's steep snowy driveway where my Dad's 95 chebby blazer with all season tires got stuck half way up.

I finally got my xi3's on yesterday, and was also able to do about 3 hours of snow driving.

Great tires so far. Steep, snow covered roads were no problem, and braking is increased A LOT on snowy/slick surfaces.

It is honestly amazing how differently winter tires and summer tires act in the snow. Over the weekend we got snow and my summers were still on. That was dangerous to be driving. Any acceleration would spin tires, and turning was scary. Braking? Yea right.

Now, 3 days later, more snow, but the xi3's this time. I would have to be going up hill, and WOT to spin tires during acceleration. Braking is what amazed me the most. My impreza doesn't have ABS, so my brakes lock up very easily in the snow. With the xi3's it's night and day.

Just need moar snow!

I'm thinking about getting LM60s next week, but is it better to buy it new at the shop or just buy slightly used or new(from craigslist) from a private seller?
Winter tires don't come with mileage warranty, and I have AAA roadside assistance, so I'm not sure if purchasing the warranty from the shop is worth the money.

And I'm trying to stick with oem size 225/45/17, but what are some other sizes that I can get for 17"?

i went out to western MD this week for Xmas at the gf's. they got about 12" of snow so i finally got to drive this thing in something substantial. and it handled it beautifully.

the only thing i didnt attempt was an unpaved, undriven, 30+% grade cobblestone road/hill. it was narrow and i had to turn onto it. if it was a straight shot and i had some room to get some momentum i may have attempted it. but i knew my limits and didnt want to get stuck on something like that, or risk sliding into something.

some pics.

I was tempted to get the winterforces. But they were only $1 cheaper than the Generals (in my size) and the generals had better reviews.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but....

How is the wear with snow/winter tires on gravel roads, compared to paved roads?

I've read that gravel roads wear tires at 40-50% quicker, and all other sorts of numbers, but I don't buy it. I drive a LOT of gravel roads, like ATLEAST 3 a day, sometimes a few hours of cruising on them.

I did this on my summer tires too, and they don't seem to have any abnormal wear. Although the winters have a much softer tread compound, and I don't know how that effects the wear on gravel.

....and I know, I should worry about my suspension on gravel roads, not my tires, but I'm not concerned about suspension.

Current winter tires: Michelin xi3's
Summers: Continential DW

Just curious.

newly installed tires (2 weeks). wintersport m3s. handles great in the snow and is a smooth ride all around. found this last night when i arrived back home from my trip.

it feels like bubble, like my tire got a bad blister on the sidewall.

there are no holes, or anything. i experienced no unusual driving or anything, the drive home went fine. i just don't understand how i got this, it wasn't there when i got them installed. could a pothole do this? no damage to rim in that area also.

i just bought these from tire rack, what are my options?

Call the rack, show them the pic, if you just got them, it should be under warr...

No obvious sign of a pinch in the rubber (usually you can tell right against the wheel)

Gravel/dirt is abrasive snow... lol.. It's got "give" VS pavement...

1. pavement
2. dirt
3. snow

In order of wear..

Word, that's what I thought.

Also the fact that you will be driving slower overall on gravel/dirt than pavement.
Gravel= 25-40 mph~
Pavement= 40-65 mph~

Surely that has an effect over a tires lifetime? Even if you only drive on gravel roads as a 1/4 of your driving, that 1/4 should be less wear than the pavement.

Basically, I was just making sure gravel driving doesn't increase tire wear, which it doesn't.
