They also had to grease Wurz up to get him to fit in the cockpit.

You're thinking of Nigel Mansell.

Nigel was too fat for the MP4/9 I believe, Wurz was too tall for the MP4/18.

They always talk about Wurz being this lanky giant...he's only 6'1"!

Most of the F1 drivers are 5'8 ish...

6'1" is pretty damn tall to be driving a single seater. Not to mention the added weight he carries.

How tall is Maak? Isn't he pretty tall?

In person Wurz seems much taller than 6'1". Actually, Webber, Sutil, Wurz, Button and Petrov are pretty tall. Massa is the only tiny one left.

Fernando and Hams aren't very tall either.

Fernando seems a lot taller here:

Similar, but Fernando is a bit taller:

Massa is comically short. Fernando is about 5'7" - 5'8" I would guess. We are about the same height.

Got my f1pick6 reminder today. Since the entire thing is really a crapshoot, I'm not interested in putting money down.

Who is still on pick6 this year?

For F1 drivers thats tall. Most drivers are closer to 5'6". The MP4/18 was made for two normal drivers, Kimi and Coulthard, which is where they had the issues. Petrov is having issues at Caterham because of his height.

Spanish lady racer De Villota signed as Marussia test driver

Mar.7 (Marussia) Spanish lady racer Maria De Villota has become a Marussia F1 Team test driver for the 2012 Formula 1 season.

Maria has raced in a variety of single-seater and sports car categories, including Spanish F3, the Daytona 24 Hours, the Euroseries 3000 and Superleague Formula Championship.

Maria has also experienced an F1 cockpit previously, having received a test drive courtesy of the team formerly known as Lotus Renault F1 Team at Paul Ricard in August of last year, where she achieved 300kms of running.

As the daughter of former F1 driver and British F1 Series Champion Emilio de Villota, Maria has always dreamed of following in his footsteps to reach the highest level of motorsport. Her integration into the Marussia F1 Team means she will have the opportunity to work with racing drivers operating at the pinnacle of the sport and, later in the year, the chance to drive the MR01.

John Booth, Team Principal, Marussia F1 Team, commented:

"We are pleased to welcome Maria to our test driver programme, which will enable her to be integrated into an F1 team environment and gain a vast amount of experience that will be useful to her career progression. We will also provide Maria with the opportunity to sample F1 machinery later in the year, further adding to her racing credentials."

Maria De Villota commented:
"I am very happy to be joining the Marussia F1 Team test driver programme. This is a fantastic opportunity to work closely with an F1 team and gain important experience to help me progress my career, including the chance to drive the new car later in the year at the Abu Dhabi test. I will be joining the team trackside so I'm looking forward to working alongside them at the first race next weekend and this can only help my future ambition to step up to F1 racing."

Interesting that they signed her as a test driver AFTER pre-season testing was over.

It's a Lady!

I've never heard of her but the same goes for most of the testers in the lower teams. Hope she does well.

Reports I've heard is that she hasn't done much in previous series she's competed in, but who knows. At least she signed for a team she might actually run for and not Lotus.

As someone who's seen her race, this is a non story. She's not very good and brings money.
