a Canadian review of the MX5 RF

I miss the removable hardtop.

It still exists in OEM form but it's kind of fugly since it was made to fit around the cage on MX-5 Cup cars.

There are a couple of aftermarket options but haven't seen anything people are super happy with yet.

Fiat is coming out with a removable hardtop for the 124 which should bolt right up to the Miata, but it's for a special edition run of cars so who knows if they'll be available for purchase (and at how many thousands of dollars).

I'd have to see it in person before judging appearance; also Mazda is asking $4,400 (as an option to the cup cars, not for retail) so maybe aftermarket is a better solution - I like the idea of it clearing a cage though; not that I'd want to track a brand new car (unless it was purpose bought), but thinking ahead... I miss tossing tiny light weight cars around and punishing tires.

unless you are competing and need a rollcage, the RF weight penalty is worth the compromise. It retains 50/50 weight and the up/down top operation gets some attention.

But don't take my word for it. Go put a few miles on a local one. It's like playing with a puppy.

I've been wanting to test drive one of these for a while now. Very hesitant because I know I'd want to take it home haha.

That happened to me as well. Went to the dealer to test a CX-3, came away with a MX-5

Great call! The CX-3 seems to have just as much passenger space anyways

Yeah, when we need space, we just use girlfriend's extra-roomy Audi A1.
