Default Acura Confirms Return of Type S Nameplate Plus a New (and Exclusive) Turbo V-6

Quote:
Acura’s performance image falls off precipitously once you get past the NSX, but the division has announced steps to spread the sportiness to the other vehicles in its lineup. The Acura Type S trim will return to multiple vehicles, after nearly a decade in which the high-performance trim has been absent from the brand. Acura also announced a new turbocharged V-6 that will be an Acura-exclusive powerplant.

Last seen on the 2008 Acura TL, the Type S came with a 286-hp 3.5-liter V-6 (in place of the standard TL’s 256-hp 3.2-liter) and also featured trim-specific chassis tuning and styling details. While Acura didn’t reveal which vehicles in its current lineup would receive the Type S treatment, a recent filing for the trademark “TLX Type S” leads us to believe the mid-size sedan will be among the first models to get the sporty upgrade.

Along with the return of Type S, Acura also announced that it is developing a new, turbocharged V-6 engine that will come exclusively with all-wheel drive, which will find its way into multiple products. Although no specifics about the engine’s displacement or power figures have been released, we imagine it will share elements with the 500-hp twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 found in the Acura NSX supercar.

Look for both the Type S trim and the new turbocharged V-6 engine to come to market sometime next decade, with the two possibly debuting together in a TLX Type S sport sedan.

Expected to borrow components from the NSX GT3 race car.

Rumors of an amped-up Type R version of the second-generation NSX have been swirling around the Internet since February 2016, just one a day after Acura opened the order books in the United States for the standard model. At the beginning of this year, Jon Ikeda, the vice president and general manager of Acura in the U.S., hinted at the possibility of dialing the NSX up a notch:

“I’m a car guy, so always faster performance vehicles … yeah we like that, we talk about it.” During his interview with Australia’s Motoring, Ikeda was a bit cautious, adding “we’ll see … anything can happen. “There’s always proposals” before revealing the company had no plans for an NSX Type R at that stage.

Fast forward to present day, a new report originating from Japan indicates the hotter derivative has been given the green light and we will get to see it as early as 2019 before going on sale in 2020. While the standard NSX packs 573 horsepower, the meaner version is rumored to bump output to 641 hp transferred to the road via the same dual-clutch, nine-speed automatic transmission.

It is believed the biturbo 3.5-liter V6 will borrow a thing or two from the race-spec engine found in the rear-wheel-drive NSX GT3 race car. Like its track-only sibling, the highly anticipated NSX Type R is expected to feature a more aggressive body dipped in carbon fiber and fitted with a large wing for added downforce at the rear axle.

There have been a signs pointing towards the direction of a beefier version, with Honda patenting a new air dam illustrated on an NSX. Not only that, but a couple of interesting prototypes were seen at the Nürburgring undergoing testing last August, so this new juicy rumor makes sense.

Meanwhile, Autobild reported last month about Acura’s plans to unveil an NSX Roadster as early as this year, but just like with the Type R derivative, we’ll believe it when we’ll see it.

I agree. The alpha name designations were hip in the early 2000s, but they just confuse people now.

Funny they mention wanting to bring out more NSX models, they can barely sell what they are building. They sold 5 in the US last month. January, February, March was 34,17,16. The most fruitful months were October and November, selling in the 80s,but that was due to some strong incentives.

Acura had acknowledged that the NSX is barely selling and they are okay with it, they say it at least brings curious buyers into the dealerships.

Last NSX did not sell either. It was like driving a faster fancy Accord. A fancy feminine car

Looks are one thing, complaints about the transmission are another. I'll take one with SH-AWD and a 6 speed manual. Thank you very much. Honda bring on the Type S already.

If they would have thrown a turbo V6 in the back, 6 speed option and priced it in the 60-80k bracket, they probably would have killed. They would have made it compete against the entry level Porsches and the TT, and probably would have done well.

Instead they're making even more expensive versions. They'll sell a handful to the gotta have it crowd, then it'll fizzle out.

Probably unrealistic from the development standpoint, but they should engineer a simpler, cheaper, non hybrid version.

here is an idea honda... you nimwits.
Make it a tt V6 and only RWD and with a DSG or manual option, and ditch the stupid heavy batteries and electric motors. Make a pure drivers car, You cannot POSSIBLY do worse than you are now with the current NSX failure.

I said this from day one when they decided to change everything and make it a high dollar battery tour de GTR rather than a proper NSX replacement.

They didn’t want to compete. Easier to compete in a space of one, than a half dozen. It’s just not the Honda of the 90’s or early 2000’s. Look at the CTR, instead of competing head to head with the STI, Golf R, EVO, and RS, let’s just make it the fastest wrong wheel drive instead. It’s their MO.

Understood what you're saying. But to use the CTR, wouldn't a twin turbo V6 in a RWD NSX be the equivalent? Had Honda made an AWD CTR that was 40% more expensive than the STI's, RS', R's, that would be a fair assessment. But Honda kept the CTR FWD and just added boost with boost countermeasures.

To be even fairer, Honda had already added boost to the previous gen Civic Type-R.. they just finally took it off the euro Fit-based Civic platform, and put it back on the US Civic platform where it belonged.

.. and the CTR will run circles around the STIs, RSs, and Rs on a race track while using up less fuel, brakes, and tires while still being a very reasonable daily driver.

Gotta have that AWD for winning the stoplight drags whenever V8 Mustangs and Camaros, //M cars, AMGs, SRTs (including Jeeps) aren't around, though. You can be the fastest egg on the block from 0-60 if you sacrifice your clutch, and you can almost out pace minivans in an STI from 5-60 if you don't like clutch replacements.. you just need to go stage 2.

No word of a lie. Acura sold 5 NSX's in the month of April in the US. I realize Acura is in damage control making excuses why only 5 sold but it's pretty tough to hide what a spectacular failure the car has been. Worst part is that it was very unavoidable as most of us could have predicted it was going to bust. Any time you resurrect a classic you better ensure the new version pays homage to the original and they did none of that in making a cold, bloated, tech-filled hybrid, that's strictly a numbers car devoid of any emotion. It's an NSX in name only.

Nimwits indeed, but to hell with the turbos. Real drivers cars don't need them. In fact, shouldn't have them.

Start with the J37, destroke to 3.0l, raise redline to 9,500 (same piston speeds as an F20C), install K20A head design. ~400hp from 3.0 liters displacement, easy.

That's more than enough power for a 2800lb NSX to be the best driver's car ever made. And it shouldn't weight any more than that. If Honda can make a mid sized sedan (the Civic) weigh about that, why not a mid-engine two seater?

when they announced the specs for the current NSX I shook my head and say, 'that is not the droid you should be looking for'.

Skip the hybrid crap....That is the thing of hyper cars. You cannot out MacLaren MacLaren. Instead, build on your pure drivers car roots.. You would have sold many more.

They made the same mistake with the NSX that they made with the CRZ. The CRZ had none of the charm of the original CRX. It was too heavy to be a lightweight 2 seater. It was too underpowered to be any kind of performance contender and too inefficient to attract the hypermiler crowd.

The NSX was supposed to have a V10. Honda even published a paper on it in English; it was basically their answer to the Lexus LFA engine. It got canned in the financial crisis. Then it was delayed for so long that they lost the gee whiz factor of being hybrid. Ferrari and McLaren beat them to it.

What a joke. Acura has't had anything since the RSX Type-S went out of production.

That is the last car I bought new before my 2015 WRX, and ironically enough, cross shopped it for months against the 2002 WRX. Couldn’t get over the tonka toy interior of the Subaru, so I went with the S. Even the RSX was quickly outdone a year later by the SRT-4.

Have you driven a 2.4L ILX? 3000lbs, 200hp/180lb-ft, 5-60 in 6.9s (a hair faster than the RSX Type-S). The MSRP sucked, though. Used, you can pick them up for the same price as a Civic Si. I loved mine.

It's remarkable that every FWD and RWD car in Western Washington isn't at the bottom of the Salish Sea in the world you live in.

Acura needs to bring back an Integra type sport car. Enough of these boring mid or full sized sedans that aren't fun. Build something to compete with cars like the S3.

5 door hatch with the Type R engine and AWD and leather Recaros, with mini TLX styling. That'd get me back in an Acura after 19 years.

I know, it'll be a sedan if they make it.
