Default Another tire size question...

I have been searching around for a while and really can't come up with a good answer. Lots of conflicting information out there.

I am currently running Azenis 615 in 225/45 R17 with 17x7 rims. They are really starting to show their age and are really getting scary in the rain, so time for new tires. New tires will be going on 17x8 rims, and because of an increase in wet traction, I have (95%) decided on Hankook Ventus R-S2. I just don't know what size to go with. With an inch wider rim, I was thinking an inch wider tire should do, that leaves me with something like 245/40R17. That would be very close to the same diameter as the previous, just a little wider. Another option is the 235/40r17. I have heard of people putting on 255 or even larger on 8" rims, but I can't imagine that is a good idea.

I did find a few places where people have said the the Falkens sizes run a little off compaired to other brands. This makes me question my theory of basing the size of Hankooks off of the size of Falkens. Not sure how this should change things, but I thought that I would throw that out there.

Currently, the Azenis are just barely rubbing, but only when turning and braking on a downhill (the only time I have heard it). That makes me wonder about getting wider tires, but I don't know if it would be much worse because they will be the same diameter, just a little wider, and it isn't currently anything that I am really worried about. Plus, I don't want to streatch skinny tires onto wide rims.

The car gets driven a few times a week, and it might see an autocross or track day once in a while. Really liked the Azenis, but want better wet traction, for a similar price. Noise isn't such a big deal to me, but I would like a tire that will last long enough that I don't go completely broke replacing them.

So, for all of you smart people, what size would be the best for me?
235/40R17,
245/40R17,
or something else?

1st are these for the 98 LGT? The suggested wheel width for a 225-45-17 tire is between 7"-8.5" (per Tirerack). If you are already rubbing some on 225 why would you want to go wider? 225s fit just fine on 8" rim (they are not too skinny). Depending on the offset of the 17x8 wheel, the rubbing could be worse (even with the same size tire).

Yes, they are for the Legacy. I don't rub much at all on the 225s, probably only a little bit once a week or so. The 225s look right on a 7" rim, so, the way I see it, they would be a bit skinny for an 8. I guess I could go with a 225, but it doesn't seem like 235 would rub that much more, that is less than a half inch, so they would stick out less than a 1/4 inch on each side? Doen't seem like it would rub a whole lot more.
