Post Install: Tanabe Racing Medallion for 2000 RS

Some may remember, that I ordered my Tanabe Racing Medallion exhaust, and was having some delivery issues from OHC in the Valley. Well, they finally came through on Friday, and I didn't get around to the install until Sunday night at 11:00pm.

It's straightforward, and I did it all myself.

Disassemble and remove the stock pipes (I wouldn't suggest doing it while it's still hot like I did, lol) and set them aside. I would suggest using a bit of WD-40 on the bolt threads to help loosen them up, because they do get hot, and become a bit stubborn. I ended up breaking one of them in the process, so the replacement is on 3 day order from Subaru, and it IS a special order item, so they won't just be lying around.

I installed the front section first by attaching the rubber hangar, and the one spring-loaded bold that I still had (loosely) and then carefully (as not to dent the cannister) hung the rear half of the exhaust, and bolt the two pieces together, with the supplied bolts, and washers. Don't forget the gasket, and be sure to tighten down the bolts evenly. Both the nut & the bolt are 14mm, and can be reached without any special extentions, just a socket, and an open end-wrench.

Once that's done, tighten up the front of the exhaust pipe to the back of the Catylitic converter. Make sure the flanage is aligned, and when tightening it, make sure to keep the spacing even on both sides, to keep the pipes aligned in the center. Alternate tightening the bolts, instead of just wrencing one down, and then the other. For this, I used a 14mm socket, and a 12mm open-end wrench.

viola!

I was impressed with the sound of the system, but I think it sticks out a little too much for my taste. I was going for performance, without much visual change, which I think the G-power medallion would have given, if they made it for the RS but all in all, I'm impressed. I will eventually get around to some pics, along with my painted side skirts for my web page, but for now, just imagine it.

The sound isn't too obtrusive when driving with the windows up, but windows down on a long drive may get annoying. It's also hard to leave your girlfriend's house quietly at midnight, or arrive at your house at 1:00 without announcing that you have a modified exhaust. The system comes with a silencer that I haven't tried, but when I do, I will note it.

Performance wise, I think it boosts the low-mid-range a bit, smoothing out the prominent jump in power at 3500, but it dosen't seem to do anything to the top end. If anything, I would say that it may take a little away from it, but barely noticable. You may note that all else is stock, and modifying the intake will change your results drastically.

Hope you all enjoy!

RD

is it reallyu loud inside the car?? can u still listen to CD??....heheeheh
coz as i notice that 5zigen is really quiet inside the car. But the thing is that it will only have a high-pitch sound instead of very nice deep sound by tananbe.

Coz i'm planning to get one, just that i'm comparing the 5zigen cat-back with this tanabe racing medaillion...

P.S.: where ddi u order it though?? How much u pay?
thanx
Joel

CDs are still audible at vol level 15 or so (I usually have it at about 25) but there is a deep drone all the time.

I looked at the 5Ziegen too, but I heard it on an Integra, and it sounds like any other rice rocket. The Tanabe has a nice deep sound, and dosen't turn into a gurgle at high RPMs. You can kinda hear a deep, throaty, "GRRRRRRRR" as you accelerate, but it never becomes the high pitched rapid popping that the 5Ziegen does.

I like it, and I am very satisfied with it. I bought it from a local shop in the Valley, called OHC, their number is 818-998-0015, and ask to speak with Carey, tell them that Tim sent you, and I paid $550 for it. It took a couple days to order, and again, I installed it myself, but they may be able to do it for you if you don't have the tools. I did it myself cause I hate the idea of other people messing with my car.

Good luck,

RD
