Tesla will continue to be production constrained when the Model 3 debuts. With full incentives like in MA or CA it's a 25k car base, which is an outright steal. But even without it, the efficiency and cost of the Model 3 means it can compete against a much lower gas price, no incentives needed. Someone choosing to buy an WRX STI over a Model 3 for example would spend tens of thousands more in running costs over the lifetime of the car.

However, by 2020/2021 all other things being equal there will be enough EV's on the road to impact the price of oil itself. Downward. There were 550k EV's sold worldwide in 2015, which means it was growing on an exponential with no sign of an S curve coming soon. http://insideevs.com/monthly-plug-in-sales-scorecard/. If you linearly extrapolate 2016 Q1 from 2015 Q1 to the full year, you get 825k EV's worldwide for 2016. The size of the market simply isn't a problem.
China will be biggest sales for EVs and probably biggest maker soon. Changes in Govt policy can quickly change that over there or here as few want to buy them.

There are queues at every Tesla store right now. Saw pics earlier today if massive lines. Looked like a phone/console launch during Black Friday

As I said in the OT thread, it reminds me of car reveals back in the fifties, minus the newpapered windows.

Even up here in Canada we have lineups today at the dealers. Is this thing the new Apple iPhone of automobiles?

Everybody wants a piece of that 7500 dollar tax incentive that ends after tesla sells 200,000 cars. Seems like 1000 dollars is a small price to pay for a deposit to hold your 7500 dollar tax break.

Hope the car exceeds expectations....Will be interesting to see what happens.

Yes. Amateur tally of US and Canada was up to ~24k people in line. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...view?sle=true#

I'll just say what was said immediately after the first iPhone was revealed: "They're going to print money with that thing"

I think if there is an AWD option I'm probably going to be putting down a deposit tonight. There is some scuttlebutt about the thing being 35k - 60k, with 60k having all the bells, awd, 300 mile range, and sub 4 second 0-60MPH time. I'm capping myself at 50k for one.

I was probably ~50th in line at the Natick mall this morning at 7. It grew respectably from there, but we had nothing on Bellevue:

I totally waited 9 hours in line at the mall to give them my deposit - the news crew was there and I waived to the camera - can't wait to see if I was on TV! So awesome, and of course I was at the mall anyway - picking up the new Kardashian eyeliner, visiting the Genius bar (for geniuses and other cool people), and seeing other smart people wearing smart fashions.

Oh the #1 Tesla hater on here decided to pay us a visit. I'm so surprised

The only thing I'd wait in line for on the Earth is Marisa Miller, Jennifer Connelly, or Little Caprice

Guess so. I don't know why this company or their vehicles scares them so much.

Hoping for a hatch opening like the S and I'm throwing down some bennies!

I expect nothing less from my cousins across the water.

I'd rather just order one on Amazon Prime like a sane person with a real job.

That long of a line to give Tesla $1000 ? I would have gone to place a deposit if I did not have to work today. I think this model 3 will be amazing; I don't even have to see it to place down my hard earned money. My reasoning is simple, if their $120k car is 'good', so their $35k model will just be the same. You know, just as fast, just as luxurious.

I reserved a Tesla 3 about a minute before it went live, someone leaked the URL. My credit cards was charged right away.

Yeah that actually worked better than preordering an iphone ever did.

Mine is reserved.

At least it's only $1000. Many Model X owners had deposited up to $40,000 for 4 years.
