While it *will* plug right in, certain pins may have different wires connected to them (especially the illumination wires), so I'd look at a wiring diagram before risking frying the HU.

Sure, it will fit and look nice, but not as good as a decent aftermarket HU.

i don't know. the wiring harness from crutchfield is the same for both the 00-03, actually goes even further back. u shouldn't have any issues.

Yes, the physical connector/wires are the same, but the *function* of some of the wires has changed over the years. For Imprezas, the change happened starting with MY02 -- check out the two different wiring diagrams linked to from the forum sticky.

odd, because i had the connector from crutchfield used in a 00 obs and it worked fine. i sold the unit and connector to someone with a wrx and they didn't have any problems at all.

Something must have been done wrong with his install because as long as the slot is double din the dash piece should fit back on perfect. DIN sizes are universal... it's not like you have to buy new dash pieces to install 2 new head units

My 2004 Forester 6-disc works and fits perfectly in my 2000 RS. Not sure about the Outback though, but it should be exactly the same

The HU was likely misinstalled. Most HUs can be installed either using DIN or ISO mounting (not to be confused with DIN-sizing).
  • DIN mounting: DIN mounting involves sliding a sheetmetal sleeve into the opening from the front, then reaching inside it and bending out tabs to lock it in place. The HU then slides into this sleeve and locks in place. Either the sleeve or the HU has a narrow trim ring around the outside to cover up the edge of the sleeve.
  • ISO mounting: ISO mounting uses neither the sleeve nor the trim ring (often, the trim ring needs to be unsnapped or unscrewed from the HU body). For ISO mounting, OEM brackets are screwed onto the sides of the HU body; the whole assembly is then attached to mounts inside the dash, usually using screws through the OEM brackets.
The Impreza uses ISO mounting. If you DIN-mount on an Impreza, the DIN-mount trim ring will prevent the OEM HU surround plastic piece from fitting back in place.
