I want to learn how to speak german
Well i just got back from a work related trip in germany, and i fell in love with the country. I went with my father who speaks german(learned when he was young) and everything went really smoothly. Besides knowing how to ask for drink and directions I was at a total loss in speaking the native language.
I was wondering if there are any special schools or class on can take that would help me to speak the language. Im still of college age so I could enroll in a school but id like to try something a little less costly at first. Eventually my plan is to begin to learn the language here with the help of my father and some kind of starter courses, then to actually move to germany for awhile where I could fine tune my accents, and vocabulary. any suggestions???? PS the cars in germany are sweet!

Is Berlitz still around? That used to be the most well-known language school.
And good luck; I was born there and still wound up flunking out of 8th grade in German School. EDIT: http://www.berlitz.us/default.htm |

in high school i took german.had a great teacher. i had him for two years and he was the reason i liked that class. very animated, great teacher.
we would have days where we were only allowed to speak german and he would call on everyone in the class to test our knowledge. if you got it wrong he would scream, "NEIN, DAS GEHT NICHT!!!!" (no, that doesn't go) or "PUNKTE AB!!!!" (points off). of course with out him teaching it probably wont be that fun. he would also pretend he was a tank commander and yell at us like we were the enemy as he drove around the classroom. good times |

you could always try the "teach yourself xx" software. some of it is fairly inexpensive-- probably good reason for that, but even the good stuff that comes with a mic is well under $100.
that would teach you conversational... you'd probably be awful at written without time in a real classroom, though. I find the software to be very useful for brushing up, but not a substitute for conversation. of course I also have had 5 years of classroom instruction. |

yeah the berlitz program seems good to speak it, but totally different from the lessons i had in school with spanish. maybe going back to school is the only way.
I checked out a local community college that offers it as a minor...maybe ill call them up. |
