Default December Road & Track - MS3 vs. WRX Limited

I recently received R&T in the mail.

2007 Mazdaspeed 3
Curb Weight: 3180 lb
0 - 60 mph: 5.9 sec
0 - 100 mph: 14.4 sec
Quarter mile: 14.3 @ 99.3 mph
60 - 0 mph: 119 feet
Lateral Acceleration on 200-ft skidpad: 0.83g
Slalom speed on 700-ft slalom with 100-ft spacing: 63.5 mph
Tires: Bridgestone Potenza RE050A

2006 Impreza WRX Limited
Curb Weight: 3240 lb
0 - 60 mph: 5.6 sec
0 - 100 mph: 16.0 sec
Quarter mile: 14.2 @ 94.3 mph
60 - 0 mph: 131 feet
Lateral Acceleration on 200-ft skidpad: 0.79g
Slalom speed on 700-ft slalom with 100-ft spacing: 64.8 mph
Tires: Bridgestone Potenza RE92A

Looking at the numbers, it seems the Mazdaspeed 3 has a soft suspension. Braking and lateral acceleration differences are highly dependent on the type of tires. The slalom speed is based on tires and the shocks and springs. Given the WRX managed to overcome it's deficiency in tire grip and pull out a higher slalom speed makes me think the WRX could match in handling if given the same tires. I think Mazda's car give better driving dynamics than the Subaru's from my experience (from driver feedback to preditability of the car's movements to directness of inputs given).

However, the Mazdaspeed 3 will be all over the WRX without the WRX modifying.

I think my conclusions are backed up here in the MotorTrend article, where the two cars were autocrossed: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...k_testing.html The lap times were so close that changing the tires on the WRX TR would have allowed it to beat the MS3.

It's silly to compare 2 cars with such different tires. The RE0x0 series is a hi-perf summer tire, while the RE92 is an all-season tire. Put equal rubber on both cars and the braking, lateral acceleration, and slalom speeds will be even better on the WRX.

This is why magazine racing is dumb.

So it is slower. The only thing that the skidpad tells us is that the Mazda has better tires but that isnt too hard to figure out just by knowing anything about tires.

I dont know how they only got a 94 mph trap speed out of the WRX.It's gotta be good for 96-97mph on a bad day.
0-100mph
WRX - 16.0
MSP - 14.4

what a crock. subaru loses every comparo, and they ALWAYS point at the tires. I wish someone would do it properly and throw the same make of tire on both cars.

Uh, no. There's a good reason they put the RE92 on there. Same reason the debuted the Forester in Colorado. A majority of their customers are not nabisco members prone to tuning for dry handling. THey sell as many Subies in Co and New England as in the rest of the country combined. It's a cold weather, foul conditions car.

I think the dealers should have a free or minmal charge upgrade to decent summer tires for every impreeza.

12345 Just like a lot of other manufacturers.

The 92's are also good for n00bs because they are predictable at the limit.

is that 0-100 16s a typo? or did they stall the car after the 1/4 mile?

no that is about right, wrx falls on its face in the latter half of the speedometer. Add to that the likely extra shift and you have that kind of result.

Ehh they're somewhat predictable on water but after that as the conditions worsen they're completely unpredictable. And worthless, I've had cheaper all season tires that handily outperformed them. These tires are a disservice to people in CO, the northeast and anywhere else thats snowy, which is where Subarus tend to be most popular. It's not a matter about high speed performance, subaru could simply just include a far more predictable and capable tire and anyone would benefit from it.

Given that they are almost identical in price, I'll take the AWD and buy a Subaru. I like to play in the snow.

verbatim!

/me wonders how each of the cars actually felt during the autox/slalom tests, arguably more important than the absolute numbers.

Why would they change the tires for a magazine test when those are the tires that each car comes with?

If you change the tires, you misrepresent the car you are buying ... looking at percentages, how many people do you think actually change the tires on their WRX before they wear out? Probably not many

Because tires last for a fraction of the life of the car. Most people will upgrade, or buy whatever the tire guys recommends.

If a person isn't going to upgrade tires, they likely don't read R&T, DON'T drive hard, and will never learn the limits of RE92's.

Those reading R&T care which tires are on the car, likely drive spiritedly, are looking at the WRX as a sporty option, and would immediately or eventually upgrade to a more suitable tire.

The mags blow off the WRX as inferior in testing; yet they tout themselves as being 'the enthusiasts choice'. Automobile did the same test, and of course the Mazda won. But in the sidebar, they had two autoX champions drive both cars in an autox, and both preferred the Subie.

Uh-huh.

IMO, mags should put the same tires on every car for testing numbers/times. Otherwise they're simply testing tires: oh, the re92's suck, the 050's are better.
