Default New "whine" while driving and now my reverse lights are stuck on!

Not sure where to start or what questions to ask.

I seem to have developed a whine while driving under normal, sane conditions. I only recently realized that this was the case, I'm not sure what I've done to provoke this. It is pseudo-high-pitched and does "respond" more when I am on the gas.

Second, my reverse lights are now on like I am in reverse...all the time. Again, no known cause, no weird ass shifts or general stupidity. I don't know how long they've been on.

However, I did make one thread in this sub-forum just after getting the car about slipping the clutch a bit while in second gear, if one cares enough to search my created threads. But no other odd behavior, just two oil changes and new tires back in June. Help!

reverse light switch frozen in place?? --> probably the cause of that problem, although I don't know what could be causing the whine, what type of gear oil do you use?

It's never been changed AFAIK. Just over 64k miles on it...

I'm going to check out the reverse and neutral switches now...I did some searching and that does seem to be the issue.

They are constantly on when the ignition is live.

at 64K miles, new gearbox oil wouldn't hurt. I just put in some Valvoline 75W90 in last week, and my car shifts like butter now.

You've probably seen this but i'll just put this up in case others are having a similar problem.

Good luck with the whine/reverse light problem, keep me posted if everything works out for you.

Yeah, that's on my to-do list.

The lights didn't come on when I went out to move it, but I pulled it into the garage and fiddled with the connectors anyway. I didn't touch a thing before pulling it in!

I remember when on my NA Legacy the reverse lights came on, but I think that was due to an electrical short in the switch cos I did ford some fairly deep water not long before. Might as well just d/c the connectors in the meantime til a solution is found, primarily for safety reasons.
As for the whining sound, lord knows. perhaps the two are related, because it seems that they are. I'm not sure. All the manual Subaru 'boxes I've heard whine, so I can't really say much on that at all.

Well, I was thinking...since I've had the car I haven't really driven with the windows fully closed (smoker and unseasonable weather) on a regular basis. Maybe it's just my overactive imagination thinking something is wrong since I'm not 100% used to how the car sounds.

The car's great otherwise...no sputters, pops, clangs, et cetera. Drives smooth, same power, no hesitation or the like.
