Default Painted Sideskirts: Have them painted or buy pre-painted?

I'm looking to get the sideskirts painted on my "new" '02 WRB WRX Sedan.

I got quoted $120 to have them painted (from a NASIOC member who runs a paintshop), and $235 from Subaru for a pre-painted set.

Which would be a better choice?

Thanks in advance.

I painted my skirts myself because my father owns a body shop and I am usually doing all the painted anyways so I got them ready and painted them... it was a PITA because of all the rock chips and crap, I put about 2-3 coats of primer and then wet sanded them after so the paint would stick good...

if you have the money I guess I would say but the already painted 1's... and if you want another pair of side skirts?

Factory painted ones are probably more durable, but for twice as much. I'd probably go with painting the stock ones for that much of a price difference.

Yeah, the rock chips are what I'm afraid of. I mean, I guess if I'm getting them done at a reliable shop, it has to be a good job or I can get it re-done.

I'm just thinking that it'll look 10x better pre-painted from the factory. But then again, it is a 2002 and the paintjob isn't 100% perfect as is...

If you buy the prepainted ones you'll also always have the option of going back to stock...

Have somebody do a quality paint job on them. The ones i bought from subaru are nothing like the paint on my car. They are very dull and have no mirror to them.

The way I see it is if you can sell your stock skirts (permitting that this was your plan anyway) for more than $115 than you can go ahead and get the Subaru ones since that would cover the cost of getting them painted. If you can sell them for any more than $115 you will be saving yourself some mulah.

Reasoning:
$235(subie pair) - $120(paint cost) = $115(price you should try to sell your skirts for or more)

I heard that the Subaru painted ones sometimes don't match up cause of the new paint vs. the weathered 2002 paint on the car now. Any thoughts on that?

I would not doubt that... Alot of car companies paint there plastics (like bumpers, sideskirts..etc..) and sheet metal in a different process and you can usually tell if you look hard enough that they don't really match too well. I'm sure the subaru painted 1's won't be the EXACT color match and won't quite have that shine, either, unlike a freshly correctly painted side skirt would be. Mine came out awesome, just had to put a few coats of primer on to cover most of the stuff, and I did it all myself so it didn't cost me much of anything. For the durability and shine, it really depends on how much material your putting on, as long as you have 2 coats of clear you'll have a really nice finish. and if the shop your going to take them to is a good, you sholdn't have a problem.

unles you paint the whole car its hard to get an exact match do to the age of the car. but hey ur not trying to win any shows are you(if you were you'd be spraying the whole car)? in the difference is very minute only a jackass would try to point it out.

I'm going to paint mine i think. My uncle has a shop so i have a place to work on them. I just hope i don't have to put 3 or 4 coats of primer on mine! But if i do oh well. I'm going to make sure to put plenty of clear on them though. I was thinking about maybe putting chip guard on the front. For the price you got to paint them, i'd go that route. But sometimes you get what you pay for.

Just remember to make sure you give the clear enough time to flash in between coats so it doesn't run!
