The V30 wasn't on my radar at all until this week but with my 6P rapidly turning into a hot pile of garbage (42% random shutdowns!) I decided to do some research and pretty much across the board the initial impressions are fantastic. I'd be a little leery of LG as the mfg but they're making the new Pixel too I believe which is what I was already looking towards as my next replacement so there may not be getting around that. I'd just have to keep fingers crossed they figured out their hardware issues over the last 2 generations.

I want to not want that phone because LG and I am not crazy about the UI config from what was shown in that video, but that is just a matter of learning it. I do a fair amount of macro-ish photo stuff for work, trying to get pictures of cracks in structural parts and various up close detail pics, which the 6P was not so great about. If my 6P holds out another 6 months before it's FUBAR I might be able to get a v30 for a bit less than the launch price.

Edit - and its smaller than the 6P, to boot

your's too? mine does it a couple times a week. Usually when I launch something like angry birds...just shuts down. otherwise it'll run right down to empty.I wonder if certain apps use more processor power and with it demanding more battery, and it's just enough to trick the power controller. I'd be willing to try and replace the battery myself if I had a good backup phone...

Yep, same issue. As far as nonremovable battery replacements go the 6P looks to be pretty damn difficult from the videos I've seen so I'm just going to junk it and go with either the V30 or the new Pixel.

5.5" 1080P display
Snapdragon 652
Adreno 510
3GB RAM
32GB Storage
USB-C
Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0
Fingerprint sensor
Mostly metal construction
Camera that's not great but better than your average potato (even records 4k)

...for the grand sum of $139 unlocked with no Amazon ads or anything.

wtf is the catch?

There's actually 2 catches: the software sucks (it's a terrible bloated version of Android 6.x with some weird ass ecosystem baked it) and the capacitive buttons are stupid and backwards.

BUT... I noticed that this phone is only branded as "S3" in the USA, it's actually an X522/S2 everywhere else... and the latest nightlies of Lineage OS are available for the X522...

So I took the plunge and ordered it, booted it up to the crappy OS for just long enough to turn on the option to allow the bootloader to be unlocked, rebooted it to fastboot, sent the unlock command, installed TWRP, flashed LOS and GAPPS, turned off the capacitive buttons and enabled the on-screen ones, and 20mins later I've got a pretty sweet little phone for super cheap

(photo taken with actual potato)
Update:
This phone's camera is nowhere near potato. It's actually takes really damn good shots.

My only complaint so far has been a random camera crash in LOS, but I think I've found a flashable zip to fix it.

All in all I'm super happy with this phone.

I just saw an advert for a new Android Blackberry phone. Promoting a 26hr battery and the best keyboard on the market.

Isn't there a modified Google Camera for the SD 65x? I'd see if that works.

My hatred for Google is growing with each day i use Android. so for about 2 weeks i have been getting 7-8 hours SOT pretty much every time. A few days ago i was using Android Auto which asked me to update some apps (Google play services) and also turn on Google Assistance so i can use voice commands. a couple of hours later, i noticed that my battery is getting hammered by location services. i stopped everything and also disabled Google now and even cleared data for the apps and cache in recovery and issue still remains. even now, i can see location services still at the top and my battery is dropping 5-7 % per hour. tried with GPS turned off, no location history and everything else i can think off.

Now i need to wipe my phone again and set it from scratch and remember not to turn on any Google services.

seriously, f you and your Google Play Services Google.

I saw that on XDA, installing it requires making a few modifications to system files and build.prop, which isn't really a big deal... but then I found another camera app called Footej that so far has worked 99% flawlessly and I think I like its interface even better than the Google Camera. Only negative is that I don't think panorama is an option in it, but it does have HDR. If this app ever starts misbehaving I'll try the Google Camera hack.

Auto update apps? Not on my watch!

Xiaomi Mi A1 (Android One) looks damn tasty! <$250 for a Mi5X running stock Android. Now make one in a 5" screen (at the biggest)!

speaking of Android problems, I'm now seeing notifications almost universally delayed by 24-36 hours on my S7. Even for things like CallControl the overlay screen doesn't show up until something like the next day after the call. Completely useless. Battery Optimization turned off for every app I care about but contrary to what every notification lag "remedy" forum post says it does absolutely nothing for me. Oh well, might as well turn notifications off and live with essentially the dumbphone experience.

Google seriously needs to fix their core services, especially that really ****ty Google Play Services. It's so damn ambiguous and seems to do way too much. I remember twice I got stuck in the never ending "Google Play Services has failed" notification overlay. That **** should NEVER happen.

Ugh, I had buried that memory deep. I spent hours online researching, troubleshooting and trying to fix that back on my OPO. I think it was when they went from KK to L and it really kicked off chewing up battery. Then it was a game of trying to get old GPS on there but not have it update to the new store and whatnot. Ridiculous hoops and hurdles to un-ruin your device.

All that stuff almost got me considering an iPhone. Almost.

FWIW my S8 locked up hard on Saturday. I had just quite out of a game the sucker straight locked up. What I want to know is why you have to hold power + vol down for a soft reset. Why doesn't just holding the power button force it to power down? Bad design IMHO.

So this is weird. I was complaining about crappy battery on Oreo on my Pixel XL.

Back on Friday I downloaded the firmware image for the last version of Nougat for my phone and flashed that. I also opted to set up as a new phone, not restore from a backup. Sat and Sun battery life was meh, so I let it do the over the air Oreo update (prior I had signed up for beta to get it "early" even though it was the final build).

Today I've been using the phone as I usually do and battery is still above 70%. Yesterday, the first full day on Oreo was nothing great for battery, but today is phenomenal. Very strange.

having poor battery performance seems somewhat common after big updates - I don't know why. Maybe there is a lot of data being transferred to setup and configure apps, OS stuff, etc?

If you have T-Mobile and on their current T-Mobile One family plan (taxes and fees included). T-Mobile will pay for your Netflix bill, starting next week.

I saw the Pixel 2 (non XL). Definitely no headphone jack and it does have the squeezy side, which pulls Google assistant. However, it's very light for some reason. Not sure what material it is. I didn't get to see the tech spec from the phone. However, it seems like the front bezel is as big as the 6P, maybe a little smaller but not by much. So it does still have a pretty big bezel.

N00b question for you all. Where's a trusted sight for OS images? My 6P has not done the best lately and now the phone will die once I get to 15-20% battery life. This followed one of the monthly updates, so I hope it's just software.
