I've waved multiple times in the past few weeks and not a single reply.

I always get the subaru wave from other wrx and sti owners. Every other Subaru no way they'd wave.

Good points ↑↑↑ , particularly with respect to breaking out "driving enthusiasts" as being a category somewhat separate from "car enthusiasts" taken more generally.

I'm not much for doing attention-getting modifications to my cars either, don't think I've ever in my life done a mod strictly for appearance reasons. But that doesn't mean I leave them 100% OE either. I have modified some cars fairly extensively, and they've all retained a low-key external appearance. Even the car that now doubles as an occasional road course toy only looks a little different from stock.

Perhaps that's part of the reason - I can see it being an easy assumption that cars that look low-key are not being driven by "enthusiasts", and just another car in traffic. That said, a couple of days ago some guy in the next lane at a traffic light (driving what I think was a 1990's Honda minivan) was very much aware of what a WRX was and was waving enthusiastically. Wasn't expecting that at all, though after getting past the surprise of it all I did return the wave.

It's so funny you wrote this, on my way home today I was waiting for a mini-van to pass so I could make a left turn onto the road, well the mini-van started to slow and I was thinking to my-self "WTF" speed up so I can make my turn! Well....the van drives by and an older guy is driving and is intently looking at my car with a huge smile on his face. I drive a wingless CWP sti, nothings that stands out. So I guess these guys in minivans really appreciate WRXs.

I find less waves this year than last year. Usually it's the too-cool-for-school crowd that doesn't wave to anybody unless their car is dragging body like a mortician and farting out the back like a hippo. I'm just not willing to make my car sound like this for an extra wave or two.

Here in the suburbs of Philadelphia I would say at least 2/3 of WRX and STi wave regardless of which generation. Maybe being in a fairly rural area with decent visibility of what's on the road has something to do with it

I wave in my WRX to other WRX and STi drivers and mostly get waves back. I will wave to other Subarus if they are noticeably modified like Forester XTs.

When I drive my wife's Forester I don't bother waving as I mostly get blank stares.

So I would no longer call it the Subaru wave and just call it the WRX wave.

Anyone ever wave at someone, then realize you are not in or even near your car? Probably confuses people.

Default Not getting the subie wave

Up here in oregon, willemette valley area, it seems like most of the subie drivers wave. id say a good 80+%. its the 15+'s that don't wave around here hahaha. not sure if its just not being passed onto them or what around here but i get stiffed a lot hahah.
