Default The car reved to redline would not stop then the motor blew?? WTF

I just got done installing a new PPG transmission with a new clutch and reserfaced stock flywheel. We dropped the tranny from under the car. The only thing we took off the motor was the intercooler.

I started the car and drove in down the street. All was fine for about 10 miles

All of a sudden while I was in 2nd gear and the revs went nuts. It started bouncing off the rev limiter. I took it out of gear and it was still doing this out of gear with the clutch down. So I try and stop the car and the brakes wont work. I had to pull the ebrake going about 30mph and shut the car off. Keep in mind that this was for about a 20sec and the whole time the car was bouncing off of redline.

I go pop the hood to make sure the throttle cable was not stuck. I moved it and it seemed fine. Check the gas peddle and this was fine also. I go back to start the car and same issue just reves up to redline.

I pop the hood and check the cable again. I moved it a little and pushed on the peddle a few times go back and start the car and it reved fine but know I have a rod knocking sound. The sound gets louder once I hit the gas.

So at this point I limp the car home. Transmission seems fine shifts fine, Clutch feels good, no check engine lights but a lound knocking noise at idle and it gets a lot louder once I hit the gas a little. WTF???????????????

Can anyone explaine wtf happened?

Did you notice if the gas pedal moved any when the revs went bezerk?

rod knock sound usually equals rod knock.

Any chance you left something in the inlet of the throttle body that may have held it open? That's a really weird problem, maybe you cruise control lost its mind.

Yea when you took the intercooler off maybe something went into the TB? Did you cover it?

...that was my initial thought. Perhaps something lodged in the TB and then got sucked through (now causing the rattle/knocking sound).

My sentiments exactly.

This may sound like a really dumb suggestion, but are you sure something inside didn't get caught on the gas pedal- maybe a the floormat?

I just can't think of anything that would have caused that, unless, as suggested, a dropped part or something was physically holding the throttle body open.

There's nothing vacuum operated that could have caused this, is there? An 05 WRX still had a throttle cable, right? If that's the case, is there any electronic issue that could do this?

The peddle was not stuck at all. We blocked off the TB so I dont see how anything could of fell in there. It was at 3k rpm and then all of a sudden it was like someone floored the car but the cas peddle was not even pressed! If the TB was stuck oped I dont see how it would go to full throttle and not just stick at 3k rpm where it was?????????

Did you do the TB coolant bypass? how's the weather in PA? Could the TB been frozen/stuck? take off the IC and have a look.

whatever it is, looks like it'll be expensive

my guess is that the throotle body got stuck open or somthing fell into it while the i/c was off and it got stuck in there and kept the tb open.

Man that sucks. all that work/cash swapping the trans and you didn't even get to drive it. Sorry to hear about that. It will be really interesting to know what exactly caused this. something had to be holding the throttle body open.
