lookin to start a hybrid build maybe
start off by saying sorry if this is already on here and most of the hybrid builds have different mods so i figured i just start one with my mods
my mods are full exhaust header up pipe TBE and Fender CA and a zoom stage one clutch my questions are i have a 2004 wrx with blown rings or sumthin along those lines i have the chance to get a 06 sti long block. would it be better to run the sti motor(my concern is trans). or build a hybrid motor? i kinda wanna build the hybrid motor. i know i need sti HG water pump or will the wrx one work (its new). timing belt and tensioner or will the WRX one work (new also). as for turbo i wanted to run the stock tdo4 with maybe a pound or 2 over stock boost and a tune by 555. anything else i may need advice anything to help me out a little here thanks James

regardless of it being a hybrid or a full sti longblock, the 2.5 bottom end is going to make a lot more torque, and it is only a matter of time when the 5 speed goes. A lot has to do with your driving style too! If you can get an sti longblock, with all the harnesses, ecu, and dash for a good deal (and can afford it) then that is the better route.
P.S. I hate to be the one saying this, but you need to search, this has been covered and done so many times. DK |

Hybrids tend to be problematic.. Not a bad Idea but personally I would pickup some used 257 heads and just do the longblock....

If you do the full LB, will the WRX harness work? Or by running the 257 heads do you automatically need the STI harness?

I think there are a few differences. mainly AVCS... I would just pickup a top engine harness either new or used and then do the couple of wires for the AVCS from the enginebay to the ecu... I think there may also be a company that makes a harness or conversion for this...

Ah, good info. What if I don't want to run AVCS? I know you have to plug the holes on the intake cams.

No biggy then - you could probably run a 2.0 ecu as well then...

Sounds good.
After doing more research, all you need to do is:
Am I missing anything? |

Sounds about right... I'm not 100% positive though..
I'd consider running 264 non avcs cams - kelford or such... I'd also run a td06-20g with an 8cm2 turbine housing. You'll have early boost - a good amount of power and those cams will really compliment it... -Jerod |

Right now, I'm trying to save money wherever possible. I'm not making a crazy build, similar to the OP. Just a reliable DD re-using my DB small 16g.

Why not stick with the 205? It has more potential than alot give it credit for..

Honestly, I don't feel like rebuilding it. I don't have the time to take the motor apart, and start from scratch. I'm on a budget and I have time constraints. Plus, getting the 257 now helps with my plans for the future when I have more time and money to make a beast. But for now, a stockish STI SB/LB or Hybrid build will do

There were some revisions - but yes I do think they will... I know PS pump - ac - alternator will forsure.

If you get a long block all you have to do is [*]Drill &Tap location for WRX cam sensor on EJ257 If you have the avcs oil lines hooked up you shouldn't block holes on the intake cams. I know for sure the intake cam gear on the 04 sti has a point for the cam sensor to pick up a signal from. Other years may have it as well but I always use an 04 gear when I swap in a long block. |
