Default Photography: Equipment Review & Questions v.2

MOD EDIT - Previous Thread:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=918381

OK, There are tons of threads around this place about what to do, what to buy, and we have a great photgraphy thread HERE (that is the third biggest in all of OT!). Lots of questions get asked in that thread about equipment, and what's good for what, what to use for this, what to buy and all sorts of good questions. In order to try to keep all the equipment discussion out of that thread I figured I'd start a new seperate thread. I don't want this to become a Nikon is better than Canon thread or anything like that (IBitis) so try not to take it that way. If anyone has any question, feel free to ask. There are lots of people in that thread, and in OT in general that have had lots of experience with this stuff and can help. I will start this thread with 2 great resources for information:

DPREVIEW.com
They have excellent reviews of almost every digital camera. You can compare specs on any combination of cameras you want. They take very similar test shots with every comera so you can compare actual pictures taken of the same shot to compare what all the specs actually mean in the real world. There are also some excellent forums there.

fredmiranda.com
that link is directally to the review page. There are reviews there on lenses and cameras by people who own them. Very useful to read actual users impressions. There are also some good forums there, but for some reason they are very slow to load

RobGalbraith.com
Great site regarding memory cards and specific camera tests. Shows actual read and write speed in MB by card type, manufacturer, model, and size with specific cameras.

This thread is mean for anyone to use. Please ask any questions you want, and please eveyone add their $.02 to it.

Ben

My S90 seems a little dated/soft for most purposes, so I was considering maybe a Canon G12, or one of these newer mirrorless bodies with detachable lenses?

Think it's worth it to start piecing together a new platform, or do I just grab a powerful P&S like the G12?

Thanks,

-- Dave
I would personally go with the g12, my grandpa is a professional photographer and just went on trip like yours for 2 weeks. Instead of bringing his 1diii he brought both of his g12's. One is converted to take IR photos and the other is standard. He came back with over 900 photos with a ton of really nice ones.

I would say that if you are going and will be more geared towards moving and having fun and such then get something like a g12. But if your going and think that taking pictures is going to be a big part of it, then it might be worth getting or taking something that is more dslr like to full take advantage of what you will be seeing.

Thanks for the advice guys. I couldn't really pick a big zoom that I liked so I ended just getting a macro instead. I just gotta figure out how to carry all my lenses when I go out to take some shots!

Oh I meant I couldn't travel without it. If I'm just going out for the day I usually just carry my Fuji or even just my 4S.

I just got a new setup including the Canon T3i and Audio Technica ATR3350 Lavalier microphone, mainly because I need to be able to shoot short 2-5 minute videos in 1080p, but the audio is HORRIBLE. Nothing but hissing no matter what I do with the manual sound controls on the camera.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a mic? I've looked at a couple including the Rode VideoMic Pro because it's apparently highly recommended, but then again, so was the ATR-3350...

Any input or suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

I will be, on occasion. 90% of the videos will be shot with a single individual speaking directly towards the camera from 6-10 feet away. At this point, I'm about to scrap the idea of lavalier mics and pull the trigger on the Rode Videomic Pro, simply because it seems to be the only mic that Canon users say works well in the less-than-$500 range.

I have that lav. and it works wonderfully. How exactly are you setting up the shot? If your mic. is clipped to the subject and run to the camera via cable and you're getting static you need to test to see if the mic. is faulty.

A lot of people told me exactly what you said; that it's a great mic. Still, no matter what I set the camera's audio recording settings to, there is a constant hiss in the background. However, I think this problem may just relate to specific compatibility with Canon DLSRs, as there seem to be A LOT of complaints and negative reviews from Canon users.

What type of camera are you using with the ATR-3350?

I'm about to spring for a shotgun mic anyways, because I need to have something that works well ASAP, but would love to get the ATR-3350 figured out.

Sony Corp, a company that is losing $$ left and right in its various electronics depts, wants to invest $600M + into Olympus...a company disgraced because of it's alleged embezzlement to the yakuza scandal...and firing their foreigner CEO who tried to expose it.

Sony in Final Stages of Talks to Invest in Olympus, Nikkei Says
By Mariko Yasu - Jun 21, 2012 5:46 PM PT

Sony Corp. (6758), Japan's biggest exporter of consumer electronics, may invest about 50 billion yen ($624 million) to get a stake of about 10 percent in Olympus Corp. (7733), the Nikkei newspaper said.

The companies aim to reach an agreement by the end of next month, the Nikkei reported, without saying where it got the information. Panasonic Corp. (6752), which had also made a tie-up proposal to Olympus, withdrew the offer, the report said.

Olympus is the world's biggest maker of endoscopes, which are cameras used by doctors to see inside the body. Sony is speeding up a move into health equipment by using the edge its image sensors have over rivals, Hirai said earlier this year.
And the Olympus scandal I'm referring to

If this happens I wonder if this will result in some weird digital camera synergy down the line?

I think canon had a P&S with longer than 5x zoom and decent features, didn't they?

Thanks,

1. Go to local camera store

2. hold/shoot/play with both models yourself

3. decide what is too big or not.

a Canon G series is a great advanced compact....its not on the same level as the OM-D, which is firmly entrenched into high end enthusiast levels of performance, for an amazingly compact size.

It all depends what you prioritize for your travel walkabout. I can carry the OM-D and 2 additional lenses in a little slingpack shoulder bag and it all weighs next to nothing compared to my dSLR gear.

If you don't want to deal w any removable lens period, then its obvious what to get.

@Aquacow--the OM-D is pretty small--definitely smaller than it looks in photos. Yes, the 12-50 is kind of big--that's why you get the OM-D with either the 14-42 kit lens which is collapsible, or you get a small prime/pancake lens.

And here are a few photos taken with one:

It's a seriously impressive camera, IMHO.

Oh, wow.... I didn't realize there was a G1X... but that's what I get for being a Nikon person..

So re-posed... Canon G1X or OM-D for travel?

Hmm...

Despite the large sensor on the G1X, some reviews have said because of the built in zoom lens, getting decent shallow DOF is difficult, but it probably does handle low light situations better than a G11/12

So what kind of money does one get for used photo equipment anyway? Particularly in the Amateur market.

I dabble on and off with the idea of just selling all of it, but I get a feeling it would just be painful, knowing the money that went into it.

And yes, I know I'm screwed since it's all Sony stuff.

Sony A350, very light use, but obviously getting on a bit (bought in 08)

Carl Zeiss 16-80mm, bought in 08, nothing wrong with it, have two hoya filters an ND8 and a Circular polarizer.

Sigma 10-20mm, very little use, again perfect condition, bought in 09

Sony 50mm prime, bought in '11

and a Sony 70-300mm that's been on the camera once and had two shots taken through it.

...Would my guess that I'd get less than $1000 for the lot pretty accurate?

Won't the DoF be comprable with the kit 14-50 on the OM-D? That's not a very fast lens...

And speaking of kit lenses... Nikon's 18-300 is out for DX... wonder if I should just slap that on the D7000 and call it a day?
