Direct injection for 2005 STi
Any truth to the rumor that the 2005 STi will get a new type of direct injection system? The goals would be twofold: (1) to be able to add a radio and other reasonable weight increasing amenities to the vehicle without worrying about the gas guzzler tax (due to the improved gas mileage with direct injection) and (2) to increase power to counter the expected HP increase for the next gen Evo. I know there are technical difficulties related to emissions but the same rumor says they have been overcome. Anyone else hear this from inside sources at FHI?

If this is true then our less than 1 year old STi's are already obsolete

The technology marches on, but don't dwell on it.
It's like looking at the neighbors wife - too much attention away from what you've already got just leads to trouble. Besides, new ideas always seem to have downsides, right? Maybe it'll be allot heavier......like the other neighbors wife. |

It's not likely at all. For one, Subaru doesn't have direct injection gas engines working in their current fleet at all. If they were planning to use it, they'd be testing it right now, they'd introduce it to some Subaru models in a year, and then 2-5 years later it may see the American market.
Mitsubishi Motors has had direct injection gas engines for a couple of years now, available in the Japanese market. The problem is that the technology sounds better than it worked. People that own the vehicles with the engines in question have noted that the mileage gains were only realized when you drove slower than your grandmother. Once you tried to drive the car normally using normal acceleration, it exhibited the same gas mileage as "conventional" engines. The other problem they are facing is that they are not that clean. It took them a long time to get a clean direct injection gas engine, and an impressive sounding 180hp/180ft/lb's of torque from a DI na engine slowly but surely became a 150hp/150ft/lb's torque DI na engine. Not exactly impressive. Not least of all is the fact that you need clean gas to run DI gas engines, and America doesn't provide that gas at the pumps. DI will come, but not anytime soon. Anyone else remember that racing engine JDM EJ20 with direct injection that did ~290hp?

Even if Subaru brought out a direct injection engine - and it is not likely as Paul points out - it doesn't mean it necessarily feels better in the car. There are now some direct injection engines on the market in Europe (eg Alfa Romeo) and that engine certainly does not seem better than what came before it as far as driving the car is concerend.
From what I have heard, there are still problems with regard to tuning. When this technology is tuned for emissions and low fuel consumption, drivability and power are not necessarily all it's cracked up to be. Vive versa, when tuned for power - and it can deliver more than indirect apparently - emissions go way up. So enjoy that torqey USDM 2.5 for now and don't worry about the future. |

If they upgrade the STi engine after 1 model year that's a real big FU to everyone who bought a 04 STi. But that's not going to happen so what am I getting upset about? I think I need another Smack |

if you look at sti history, every version was different, maybe not immensely different, but subtle feature were always changed from year to year. I wouldnt expect it, but i wouldnt doubt it. I do hope every year has changes. It would keep us on our toes and our stomach bubbling every year for detroit.........
