Default Got my 1st Dyson analysis/Blackstone labs restults

Went through Blackstone oil labs. Terry was great and I had my results within about 1 hour of Blackstone sending me my lab results... everything was pretty normal except for my silicon was a little high and my flashpoint needs to be a bit higher. I exchanged 3-4 emails with Terry and he gave me some recommendations to try. If anyone is thinking about doing this, go for it!! Very interesting information.

Just curious why you sent to them in the first place? Was something wrong?

Nope. Just wanted to make sure everything was okay before I hit 60k and my powertrain warranty is over. Guess I can't use this as an excuse to buy a new car

Let me guess, you're running an aftermarket panel or cone oiled-cotton or foam air filter?

More people should do Used Oil Analysis at least once or twice. That way they find out what oil works in their car for their driving conditions. It's also a good way to spot problems before they get worse (e.g. leaky head gasket).

OEM Subaru filter. Just changed it 3k miles before I sent in the sample. Dunno what the deal is. He said maybe trying to re-seal the filter in the airbox and make sure it's tight.

Blackstone Labs:
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

$20 for a basic analysis, other tests (incl. the Dyson analysis) cost extra. Pricing is on their site.

What's your silicon number? Are you going to post your results?

I'm also interested in how you remedy you high silicon problem. At 25,000 miles, I sent an oil sample off to Blackstone after 5000 miles on Mobil 1; this was my first analysis. My silicon and copper results came back a little high, and Blackstone recommended checking my air filter. My original OEM panel filter looked pretty dirty, so I replaced it with a new OEM panel filter. I'm awaiting results from my 30,000 mile oil change and analysis. If my silicon numbers are still high, I'm not sure what else I can do other than check every seal on the intake flow.

High silicon and copper readings are also part of the break in process. At 22k miles on my FXT, my numbers were just starting to drop down (although still above average).

Interesting... I'll have to keep this in mind and watch for this in future oil analyses. Thanks.
