Just going to get this motor running with the spare heads I have. Having the heads cleaned, and inspected. Gaskets and timing belt kit on the way. Hard to believe that plastic cam gears still seem like the best option. Other than the very pricey JUN gears. Looking at getting some company23 tools for some of the head stuff.

I've never had a problem with the plastic gears besides getting the bolts loose. It'd be much easier if they were metal so you didn't have to be so careful to not damage them.
I've got the valve spring compressor, if you wanted to borrow it that'd be OK as long as you didn't need it for a long amount of time (and if you actually returned it )

Default New Guy

New guy here. Just picked up an 04 JBP WRX, stage 2.

Anyone know of any tuners close to Green Bay? I went to one place, paid for a tune, was told I had slight knock and suggested I replace the plugs to one step colder and try again. Did that, went and paid for another tune (discounted rate), knock was still there. They boost leak tested after the 2nd attempt and found I had a major leak, and suggested I fix it and come back.

Needless to say, I'd like to try another tuner and see what they say.

^I bet that was beyond redline.
Stay FAR away from those guys.
I can do any mechanical work you need, and Brad can do a great tune for you.

PM me if you need more info.

I just need someone to show me the proper way to boost leak test these cars. I cam from DSM's, which seem like a cakewalk in comparison. How do I get in touch with Brad and what does he charge?

Who's a good tuner that is "close" to western Wisconsin? I'm in the Hudson/Twin Cities area but am willing to drive.

I've heard good things about some shops in the twin cities. I've never dealt with them though.

Thanks for the reply. What part of WI are you from? Looking to get to know more people that know these cars. I'm a GM guy so I'm used to over simplicity.

have you made a boost leak tester yet? I can swing by your place if you have one made and an air compressor.

I live in Neenah. There are quite a few guys on here that live in a 50 mile radius. If you need to know anything let me know. I've owned a few STI's and WRX's, & I've done just about everything you can think of on them.
If you wanted to get a tune you could make a trip over this way. Me and a couple other people do road tunes.

Right now I'm trying to figure out why I'm not getting power to the ECU in an '03 WRX. I've got a thread going in the Electrical section. I'm currently in the middle of swapping an engine and can't get the car that the engine is going into to start so that put a halt on things.

What tuner do you use? Would it be safe for me to make the 4 hour drive without a tune? The car will have a full exhaust from the up pipe back, aftermarket intercooler, injectors, and a boost controller.

Thanks for the offer. Might take you up on that. Any 245/40/17 tires around by chance? Thinking about putting in whiteline steering bushings while motor is out. Maybe an uppipe. Got the full gasket kit, would have been nice if they were labelled in some way

Yeah, I never understood why they give you 3 rear main seals in those kits...
I do have some Kumho XS tires in that size, but they're bald. I was planning on bolting them for the ice this winter.

Toadz,

Your car would be safe to drive except for the injectors... what size are you putting in? If they're close you could probably get it here... otherwise you could get a tactrix cable, & I could send you a tune so you could get the car here.
Put up a link to the thread you started & I'll see if I can help.

I'm not sure of the injectors. They were already on the engine that I'm swapping in. It looks like a red aftermarket fuel rail with pink injectors.

How much are the cables and where can I get them?

If you're looking to stay cheap you could get a used 1.3 cable from someone on here, otherwise a new 2.0 is $169: http://www.tactrix.com/index.php?opt...id=6&Itemid=53

I'll give the thread a look in a little while.

Anyone put in the whiteline steering bushings? Just thinking of possible things to do while the motor is out.

Thanks for reminding me...while I'm doing an engine swap, what else should I be replacing/inspecting?

I put the bushings in awhile ago, at the time I felt like they helped a good amount.

They're cheap and make a minor difference since they are pretty thin, unless your current bushings are really worn out
