Hmong are of Chinese nationality. They've been displaced so often, their origins are shrouded in myth.

I did a pretty thorough paper/presentation on them for school last year. I came away from that with heartfelt compassion for their sacrifices and respect for their accomplishments as a people.

For a Hmong to say, "I'm not Hmong, I'm Chinese." It would kind of be like me saying, " no, I'm not American…I'm a southern, North Florida Caucasian".

Not trying to offend with this post but simply to inform those who might know very little about the Hmong population here in Anchorage. I don't know this person and know nothing of their true lineage.

Hmong may have originated from china but they are NOT Chinese they are their own asian ethnicity just like with mien as they also originated from china and probably mixed with laotian/thai but resided in the mountains of thailand. Additionally hmong and mien both have their own language.

Yeah, it gets convoluted. Chinese nowadays isn't a distinct population, as a general rule. I mean, Tibetans are considered Chinese now, but they have a specific genetic distinction. A billion plus Chinese nationals on the planet, but no two are the same, as with other races.

So, next question…is he White Hmong or Hmong Green?

My girlfriends Hmong. Speaks white, speaks a little green. Her father fought along side the Americans in the Vietnam war. Her aunties uncles as well as sisters are from Vietnam. All the way to her late grandparents.. Great grandparents etc. as far as she knows, she's considered herself Vietnamese. So does her father. But haven't actually met a Hmong person who considered themselves as Chinese. It's like when people tell me Filipinos aren't Asian. But Pacific Islanders. But the Philippines is to mixed. We're actually both.

I was parked about another 200 feet or so in front of where the WRX is pointing in that pic. Later, I tried catching it from the front, but I rushed my shot and just got my buddy while we were chatting.

I still kinda like the shot, though. Different having the WRX out of focus, but it's undeniably a WRX.

As I understand it, the Hmong were actually a nomadic group of people, for the last 2000 years at least, living in the highlands of the southern China mountains and more so recently, across the planet. I understand that they are a distinct ethnic group and that they don't consider themselves to be Chinese.

China has 55 distinct minority populations. Some of those would prefer not to be called Chinese too.

The "Lee" the individual of discussion is not at all hmong. When I first met him I thought he was hmong mainly cause of his last name. After meeting him he told me he was chinese. After talking to him today he's actually chinese and Vietnamese from what he told me and spoke both languages.

Yeah, called the future father in law to catch up. He was telling me how long long ago his family had to flee to jungles to hide from Chinese militants. They found a way to make it to Vietnam and adapted. So his great grand parents learned Hmong green/white, Cantonese & Vietnamese. Crazy.

Followed NCETRY out to the valley this evening.

Nice looking car man, however you looked to be blowing some smoke from underneath the car. Also, just my own thing, still odd seeing those plates on a Subie after seeing them on a Lightning for so long.

I was just walking down the street 10 minutes ago trying to check my mail, when all of a sudden TwoTrunkz aka kyletakahero aka SuperSleeperSTI just drives down my street. Didn't have time to wave, but I did have time to mean mug while figuring out who that was.
