I swore I would not buy another Subie if it wasn't a wagon, but the STi roof rack/cargo box combo looks awfully tempting...

Not sure about this magical $300 discount from rack-n-road you speak of. They wouldn’t offer any discount at all when I called. Luckily I had a friends and family coupon from REI that saved me about $160.
This looks so clean, nice work!

Default Measurement between bars?

I honestly wasn't into roof racks on performance cars, but my buddy has an Evo X with a similar setup and it's just so insanely and stable for hauling the bikes around to trails and the bike park. I used to have a hitch mount rack on my other car, but seeing thousands of $$$ in bikes bounce around in the rear view mirror just got to me and it got very annoying putting the hitch rack on and off.

Rack-n-Road here in Socal beat online prices by $300+ for the setup and I saved some more cash and did the install myself in about an hour. I would recommend buying from them if you are near one. Ask for Josh at the Costa Mesa location, he really knew his stuff and wasn't pushy at all. Even printed me a parts list so I could attempt to buy it cheaper online (couldn't). They helped me find which Thule foot kit to buy, since Thule doesn't know what to do with the 2018's yet. Last time I heard from them, they said they're looking into developing a kit for the 2018. After 5 min at the rack shop, we found that the Thule Kit 3068 for the 08-12 WRX's work perfectly.

Much more images here if you want--> http://imgur.com/a/cbTxj

This is the smallest image my phone takes...sorry :/

Quick notes from my experience:
-I found that using the inside holes (more narrow setup between both bars) provided the most level platform for using the aerobar's channel system. Round bars you can use either hole.
-Yakima channel mount feet are universal. They're just a flat rubber foot that go over the hole/screw on your channel. If you want to go Yakima, head over to a rack store and they'll show you what to use.
-If you're getting Thule Aeroblade edge bars, get a size Large for the front, and Medium for the rear.

Feel free to ask questions or request images. I feel like there is zero info on doing this yet so I'm trying to help people in the same boat
Looks awesome on the STI! Can Anyone Tell me the distance between bars? Would you say it is definitely over 30 inches?

@mrconnery

Niceee!!! Fellow WRB STi brother with roof rack What attachments do you plan to put on there?

@summitbound

Sorry, I haven't been following this thread/forum for a while. I'll measure when I get home. The mounting brackets on the 2018+ have a few holes you can choose from, so you can make it more narrow or more wide, as well as shift forward or back (depending on the hole choice).

Majority of the weight/pressure on the rubber foot is mainly in the channel, not the car paint, though. It notches in the channel. The last images in that imgur gallery kinda show it
-that bolt that you screw into the car's channel has an hex hole at the top. I screwed them in by hand, and tightened a few turns with an allen key
Over time it will 100% put wear on the paint. My 2014 5dr has marks directly under the rubber. Your only viable option if you're concerned about resale is a clear vinyl on the area where contact is made.

And the part of the channel it contacts will get a small dimple in it, on mine it's aft the front foot and fore of the rear foot

Thanks for the info, but I'm not worried about the paint. The edge of the rubber that touches the paint part doesn't really press against it. It mostly sits on top, lightly, if barely touching. It looks more like a design flow, than an actual part putting pressure on the paint, if that makes sense. I've taken the racks off recently to wash and wax the roof easier, and there was no signs of damage. There may be damaged after years of the rubber shoe mounted on the channel, I get that. Worse case scenario I'll replace that piece, no big deal. What rack did you have?

To answer the measurement question, the center of my bars on the roof are 26.5 inches appart. I forget what holes I used, but I do remember using the more narrow setup so my aerobar channel mounts were more level, so you could add an inch or 2 depending on the mounting position. The bike racks work great and the bars don't seem too narrow for them.

Getting good use out of this every weekend, no regrets!

You might not have noticed but you have the same issue I have. You have bolts sticking out towards the sun roof because yours like mine was packed with 32 millimeter bolts when the manual says it should be packed with 16 millimeter bolts. I just sent them an email asking for the right part, it seems like the long ones Beyond being ugly also will cause road noise and whistling.

Wow... thats 3 for 3 ive seen this roof rack installed with the wrong sized bolts.. 32mm instead of 16mm.. they look so bad poling through towards the center of the roof. They must all be packaged wrong.

**bought some 16mm M6 stainless steel bolts from home depot.. problem solved.

Any reason why Thule wants over $500 for this, but subaru OEM is only $280? I don't mind paying extra if there are additional form, fit, or function, but comparing pictures, these are exactly the same. What am I missing here? (OEM part is SOA567X050)

Nope. Same bars and roof limit is 88 lbs. Yakima says they tested theirs up to 165 lbs but Subaru of America said roof limit is only 88 lbs. Thule said their bars can handle more but they use Subaru’s number for the rating.

Kinda late in this, but I just got a set of OEM Thule crossbars for my 2018 and getting ready to order a carrier. After doing some digging, I’m seeing that a Subaru posts a limit of 88lbs (including bars) on the roof of the WRX. Have you pushed past that weight with your setup? 88lbs doesn’t seem like much weight (especially when you consider these carriers at 40lbs+). Thanks!

Can anyone tell me what the thread pitch is for the studs going into the roof rails? Also is the studs included in the rack kits aluminum or some other material? I have a roof rack from an older WRX I want to test fit but didn't want to out the wrong hardware in there and screw something up.

I’d bet the thread pitch is the same as the old rack but the position on your older rack is probably fixed so not sure/doubt it’s the right width for where the mounting brackets go on the newer models. Not to mention the molding/shape of the footpad is going to be different.

15 WRX factory roof rack mount installed, yea I drilled it !
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2643863

^ if you’re willing to drill through your roof. If not, you need a clamp style rack for 2015-2017.5.
