Default Hyundai Kona

Quote:
Hyundai Kona name confirmed for new Nissan Juke rival

Fourth SUV in the brand's line-up is charged with making Hyundai Europe’s leading automotive brand

The Hyundai Kona will rival the Nissan Juke when it launches in the third quarter of this year.

The fourth SUV in the brand's line-up is charged with taking Europe by storm to make Hyundai the biggest Asian car maker in the market by 2021.

A preview image of the car has been released, suggesting it’ll have a new, more aggressive-looking design than Hyundai's current models.

The Kona is described by Hyundai as a 'true SUV', suggesting it’ll have four-wheel drive and could share technology with the larger Hyundai Santa Fe.

This would contrast rivals such as the Juke and Kia Soul, which are marketed with a more urban focus.

As part of Hyundai's European push, the Kona, which gets its name from a district in Hawaii, will be followed by 29 more new model variants.

2018 Hyundai Kona Priced Starting at $20,450
Goes on sale in March

January 31, 2018

Although a bit late to the game, Hyundai will soon introduce a new subcompact crossover to the U.S. market. The 2018 Hyundai Kona goes on sale in March with a starting price of $20,450. All-wheel drive tacks on $1,300 to the price of any trim.

At that starting price, the Kona undercuts the Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-3, and Honda HR-V. Base models come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 147 hp and paired to a six-speed automatic. Standard features include a 7-inch infotainment screen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Buyers opting for the SEL trim will pay $22,100, and an extra $150 if they want it with a color-contrasting roof. The SEL offers up heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, HD Radio, and other features. The SEL Tech Package, costing $1,500, brings along a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, fog lights, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian protection, and other goodies.

Limited and Ultimate models upgrade to a 1.6-liter turbo-four with 175 hp. They also receive a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Priced from $25,650, the Limited boasts LED headlights and taillights, a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, eight-way power driver seat with lumbar, leather seat surfaces, and other features.

The Ultimate pushes the subcompact crossover into a higher price territory than you might expect. This trim runs from $28,350, a higher starting price than you’ll find on the top trims of the CX-3, C-HR, and HR-V. But you get a head-up display, an 8-inch infotainment screen with navigation, wireless charging, lane keep assist, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, park distance warning, and other goodies.

There are numerous exterior color options for the Kona. These include shades of red, blue, gray, silver, black, white, and the unforgettable Lime Twist.

So, you will be able to get this little hatch/SUV thing with AWD, a turbo, and a dual-clutch transmission...And Subaru gives the CrossTrek, and regular Impreza variations, a lawnmower engine with CVT...yep.

What the hell is NOT to like about this. 27 sticker means 24,500 actually. That is a HELL of a lot of fun for that kind of money. they made what the crosstrek should have been.

I'll get my dings out of the way first:

No manual no care, wow, another CUV, Hyundai's dual clutch is crap. I'm just going to say what you're all thinking, PONTIAC AZTEK.

on to the good:

undercutting competition, offering AWD when others won't, offering a powertrain that has more than one hamster on the wheel.

Honestly, I think this is a good move for them; the people that aren't brand loyalists will jump all over it from a cost standpoint alone, most people don't keep cars longer than 2-4 years now anyways, so the initial purchaser isn't likely to run into many issues. I'm sure other color combinations look better, but I bet there are more than a few people that like that Aztek/Vehicross color scheme.

Good on ya Hyundai.

Hyundai's own website shows MSRP with the 175-hp 1.6T at $24,700 (Limited trim).
The only thing is that Crosstrek is probably be bigger inside; I couldn't find legroom info for Kona though (haven't looked too hard either).

EDIT: found it over here: https://www.hyundai.news/eu/press-ki...pecifications/
34.6" in the rear and 41.5" in the front; the new Crosstrek has more room but FB16DIT wouldn't hurt one bit
Looks like curb weight for the Euro version with 1.6T is about 3100 lbs.

+$1300 for AWD, so $26k. But the more I look at it, the more I think this will dent Subaru, and by dent, I mean a big bowling ball dropped from 10 stories out a window type dent.... simply because more power for same comfort and (almost) same capability (I know... AWD is different - but may not be a big deal for many other than Subaru die-hards) for same, if not lower, price once the Hyundai discount hits.

Good for Hyundai. I'm still not sold on their reliability but they'll probably steal some future Crosstrek purchases.

Using the press link above, they show three interior accent colors, lime, orange, red.

Also among the exterior colors are two bright colors, the green and yellow. I have to say, that metallic yellow color is nice.

Looks like people have some kind of a love affair with Crosstrek though.
And, Subaru is happy to simply ride the wave; I sense that they will make very little effort to come up with a second engine for Impreza/Crosstrek.
They'll most likely go gas-electric hybrid first; and that's going to be it.
In the meantime, I agree, a lot of people will get Kona because the price is right, power seems good on paper, it looks pretty good, and Hyundai offers a loooonggg 10y/100k warranty.

0-60 is under 8 seconds for the 1.6T. (7.9sec 0-62) That's a win right there.

Ground clearance is listed at 6.6" vs the 8.9 with Crosstrek... (Looks higher in pics, probably differential housing).

Weight is 3088 for the 1.6T... so... that's a win also.

There's no new engine to come up with, for Subaru. They have the FA20, and they're still legos. It's most likely a cost vs. market problem. A turbo Crosstrek would/could rob buyers from the WRX, the Crosstrek, and the FXT, possibly enough to damage the market case for one of those models.

Declining sedan market in favor of these lifted hamster turds is going to moot the WRX argument. The talk of killing the Forester XT while everyone else is throwing turbos into everything is an interesting development. Perhaps the Crosstrek's success vs. the small decline of the Forester has Subaru looking into doing the XT treatment in the Crosstrek rather than the Forester? But certainly a performance uteback from Subaru can't be too far fetched with the way trends are going.
