Just a Thought: Trade my '12 wrx for an 08+ EVO??
So something has been bothering me as of late. I am at a crossroads with my '12 wrx. Reason being is that I recently spun a rod bearing and even though I managed to get it fixed under warranty, there is always that fear that it could happen again EVEN IF i drive it like a granny. I've read so many stories where people have spun rod bearings in these things with less than 10k miles stock.
I'm contemplating trading it in for an EVO X....let me take a step back...IF it breaks again I will either SERIOUSLY consider or actually trade it in for an EVO X. I guess I should ask a couple questions first and get some imput... #1...Would I be better off and more or less at less risk of this happening again if I get an accessport and protune it rather than leaving it on the stock tune? #2) Has anybody traded theirs in for an EVO X and regretted it lol? I love subaru...the look, sound, feeling, etc. BUT, I just can't get past the fact that my motor took a dump on me before hitting 40k...granted I was stage 2 but still...I need something reliable (fast also). I don't want to give up on it just yet so that's why I'm kinda just feeling it out and getting some input haha And yea, I get it...you pay to play and this it's an expensive hobby at times. I don't need to hear "well maybe you should be trading it in for a corrolla blah blah blah!" and "if you can't afford it then BLAH BLAH BLAH!!"

Before you do that, call your local Mitsu dealer and get a quote on some basic services. Gear oil for the transmission is $162.53 per gal, and it takes almost 2 gallons...... |

Eeesh haha I want to at least test drive one and see if I even LIKE the car before making that decision...I didn't really think about the maintenance costs on these cars would be so thanks for that heads up lol

You're in SCIC. Why do you need AWD? Have you seen the new C7 Corvette? I'm serious. I'm even thinking about one. More power than any Subaru with less driveline loss, less issues, more fun. A used evo? Just like a used STi. You'd want to ask the car "so, how long you been a street walker?".

I don't...shoot, half the subaru community probably don't either....to me its an awesome car and i, like others, bought it because ive always wanted one just because lol I'm thinking since the Evo has forged internals unlike its cast counterpart, it wouldn't be like getting a used sti....if I'm wrong then call me out haha I LOVE my wrx but it just baffles me that the motor can be so fragile. Oh and I couldn't get a corvette....I need the 4 door for the carpool and kiddo I realize talking about evos is a sin here but remember...its just a thought

Talking about an Evo isn't a sin. Heck, I went and test drove an X when it first came out. But I drove it right after an Audi S4 so the interior felt like....well....a city bus.
Buying any car like these is very, very iffy. I don't know if the evo crowd does the "back to stock" like Subaru people do, but unless you're buying certified pre-owned from a dealer with a rock solid Mitsu based guarantee, you are just asking for a walked crank with zero support to get it fixed. Look at what's out there that you can buy new instead. Or something that doesn't have a "buy and beat the crap out of it immediately" reputation. It's why I said Corvette..... Lots of 55 year old guys who have wanted one since they were 8 who spend more time waxing it than they do driving it. In the end, it's your choice. |

Rusty, I would keep your car dude! The motors in these cars are reliable! You had bad luck once, I'm sure it won't happen again. Just my 2 cents

I'm tempted to go test drive one... but I have a brand new car. I wouldn't know how to approach them without looking like I just want a joyride lol...
P.s. you got warranty repair with stage 2??? |

Just say you made a huge mistake and might need to trade haha And I put the car back to stock and sweet talked the dealership into pushing the claim through and it worked

Perhaps consider being more maintenance minded as well. Expensive oil is good oil, change it alot. My '09 STi doesnt need to be spun to 6000+ RPM to be fun or fast. Rod bearing puking is from hi revs.... Even at "stage 2" should be tons o balls available at 'lower' revs.

That, and no one buys a base corvette unless they're a complete tool. It's totally normal and reasonable to buy a base evo and add **** to it, but doing that to a corvette makes you look like a dip****.

You want to know if getting a tune would be more reliable, but you spun a bearing with a stage 2 tune? |

My 2011 Sti was just totalled. It was stock with a few mild items. The car ran great all the way to 36K. I heard of ring issues but I think most of that comes from abuse. Just my two cents. You may have just had an isolated case.

You were stage 2. It's not the car's fault. Go ahead and get the Evo and mess with the engine and you'll still be able to destroy it.

Ok so here is my question:
You said you where stage 2 then ask if a pro tune over stock would make for a safer set-up, what did you do for a tune when you where "stage 2"? From how you worded things I am lead to believe you did not have an access port for the car when you spun the bearing. Is this correct? |

You look like a tool nodding any car, any non car enthusiast thinks your a tool just for owning a wrx or EVO.

Ok I should have stated that I pretty much am at fault for the failure for running a catless dp with cobbs ots tune....through lack of research and yes, neglect, I kept the car with that tune for about 10k miles...I screwed up, bigtime. BUT there are stories out there of people spinning bearings before the car even hits 10k and they are stock....I've read the stock tune on these are dangerous so now if I went and did the tune right (protune,) would that technically be safer than the stock tune? That's really the question I was asking haha So yea flame me now....I'm ready....keep in mind I already admitted I was an idiot lol
