New '13 WRX Hatch owner
I just ordered my WRX. Unfortunately I couldn't find any blue WRX Hatch Premiums around here (PA) so I'll need to wait a few months to get one from Japan. For the time being I'll be driving my modded 2008 Spec V.
I don't plan on doing any major mods while the warranty is active (but I said the same when I had my Spec V, I didn't hold to it ). I think I'll get it tinted, STS and bushings (Cobb, TWM, Kartboy), and maybe brakes. One thing that concerns me is the summer tires that it comes with. I'm interested in knowing how important it is to replace/swap them off for winter? I only put about 8k on a year so the Dunlops should last me at least 2 winters. If they go for $225 a tire how easy would it be to sell them at $200/tire and then get some Conti DWS's? I live in Lancaster, PA and we usually get about 3-5 snows a year. However, I'm reading that Summer tires can be risky to drive even if it's dry out because of how the tire compound responds to the low temperature. What will I need to do differently (driving habits, maintenance, etc) than I would with my Spec V? The primary differences I see are AWD vs FWD, Turbo vs NA, Boxer vs I4, and WRX vs Spec V ownership. So far all I know is... AWD vs FWD - All tires must have similar tread wear. Change front and back differential fluid every 30k. Turbo vs NA - If I drive it hard I should give it a little bit before I turn it off so the hot oil can circulate out of the turbo Boxer vs I4 - Spark plug changes will be tough, oil should be easier (wasn't really hard on the spec v). WRX vs Spec V - Higher cost of ownership (gas, insurance, maintenance) Does the WRX have any major flaws that *could* be an issue? For example, there were reports that some Spec V's had an issue with the Pre-cat in the exhaust manifolder deteriorating and getting sucked in to the engine. This wasn't every engine though. They used the QR25DE in 2000-current and it usually only happened in older ones. Regardless, I installed a header for $120 ASAP (Exhaust mani was clean as a whistle) to prevent any potential problems. Do the 2013 WRX's have anything similar to this? I see several threads for new owners (break ins, maintenance advice, general advice), everyone seems to have their own .02 cents. Is there a best thread?

The Cobb Accessport will make the car feels much smoother. I just recently got an AP on my car and it feels like a completely different car now.

I'd like to do this but it will void my warranty. Tuning is one of the last things I did to my Spec V and I wished I would have done it sooner.

Winter tires are a must IMO for where you live. The summer tires are basically polyurethane wheels on a skateboard in the winter. I had my dealer order them at their cost from Tire Rack and I added them to the loan. No out of pocket and since they are just a part of the car it worked for me. Please I picked it up in January so they installed the winter tires before I even picked it up.

Unfortunately my dealer wouldn't do that. They sold me it at invoice and said they couldn't eat the cost.
They gave me $400 more for the trade in so I may just sell my Summer tires and buy all Seasons. |

It'll only void your warranty if you being it to the dealer w the cobb tune installed. As long as you uninstall (which is very easy, push of a button) the cobb tune and reinstall the factory tune you are ok. I personally spoke to a service manager at a mod friendly dealership and I quote "dealerships do not have to capability to see if a car has been tuned/untuned". The Ecu would have to be pulled and shipped to Japan to see if any flashes were done. Also, the factory tune is not safe. Cobb tunes and pro tunes are a lot moremore safe!

But regardless, I'm not a Subaru Tech so what do I know. I do agree that a tune makes a big deal. When they make cars they make them to work in -5f up to 120f so if you can specify it to your climate that will make a big difference. I will look in to this more. Does anyone have any input on the other concerns in my OP? |

This is my primary concern. Since that's the case I will just put money aside and when it's close to my warranty expiration I'll dump it all in at once |

The Cobb AP topic has been discussed many time. There're stories from both side. It is up to you to decide if it worths the risk. It is true the Cobb AP won't void your warranty. But if your issue is related to the Cobb AP your warranty claim may be denied. No one here will be able to tell you whether or not your claim will or will not be deny. It's all up to Subaru when it comes to big warranty job. I was in the same shoe as you. But I decided to go with the AP and I am so glad I did it. The car is MUCH more awesome than before with just the OTS Stage 1 map. Choose what you think is best for you. But If you're anything like me you won't be able to resist the temptation hahah.
