OP, if you want a reliable and inexpensive setup go with the upgraded turbo; VF39, 43, 48. You can get an STI intercooler (and the splitter and boot), a tune and be done. A fuel pump is a good upgrade for safety, but not necessary. Likewise on the boost controller. Personally, I upgraded both with a walbro 255 fuel pump and the Grimmspeed EBCS.

The meth kit just adds complexity and is one more thing to worry about. They work, but if you are looking for cheap and reliable, go with the VF39/43/48. that's my $.02.

EDIT: Looks like others beat me to it!

thanks!

I JUST called the tuner, and he said if I want the VF39, 48, 42 turbo, all I need is a STi TMIC, and a 3 port bc(if I want), and the walbhoro 255 pump as a precaution.

cant WAIT to do this to the subie! Im at 240/320 now, but he says I shouldnt go higher on stock trans, clutch and diff torque wise, so hell probably lower the torque, and up the HP so Im at 300/300-310/310 & even through out power band instead of peaking at 3500 then dropping off 100ft/lbs up till 6500 so that should actually help me more!

sounds like a plan. I owuld also do a turbo inlet while your swapping turbos if you can afford it. a 3port will be a nice addition to the set-up, and since the pump is cheap you mineas well.

Note the items were suggested to him IF HE WANTS.

And if you really want to get technical, here is PER COBB TUNING. (This is why the VF39 swap is so popular with 02-07 wrx's)

Hardware Requirements: Otherwise stock vehicle with the following modifications*:
***61623; Turbocharger: IHI VF39 (from 2004 - 2006 STi)
***61623; Intercooler: 2004 - 2007 STi top-mount intercooler or equivalent
***61623; Fuel Injectors: Stock fuel injectors
***61623; Intake requirements: Stock airbox or COBB Tuning SF Intake
***61623; Exhaust requirements: Upgraded turbo-back exhaust
***61623; Restrictor pill requirement: 0.043” restrictor pill. More information about this on page 4
and page 5.

BCS and Fuel Pump are tuner specific and generally to reduce the risk of the owner coming back because of an issue. There is MORE then enough fueling for the 39, especially with the 06/07 fuel systems being the same as the STI. BCS is completely suggestive to the tuner, it helps give a bit better boost control for fine tweaking.

You can't learn it all in 2 months.

You still don't seem to get it bud. I was suggesting those parts to him for many reasons. I said he may want AND/OR need those parts, not HE MUST GET THEM FOR THE TURBO SWAP OMFGBBQSAUCE! Glad to see you still misinterpret everything I say

I'm not sure why you want to turn the TQ down, if the object is to make more power. Give it a safe-for-the-motor tune on pump. Now if you were running massive mods and meth or E-85 that could be a different story. Just my 2 cents after running the same setup for 50k miles.

A would also agree on the new turbo inlet hose. The factory hose will be almost sure to rip sometime, if it hasn't started already.

Just remember you got to pay to play. I did the same swap on my 07 WRX and it was extremely reliable, but you never know. I went on Cobb's dyno data base, found a car with the similar horsepower that I was looking for and mirrored it. Here is the swap instructions so you don't have to make another thread on how to do the swap. Enjoy the gains.

I know the parts are 500 250 and 100 for turbo tmic and fuel pump. Tune $400 but it'll be worth it and I don't want to tune down the tq per say, I just want to keep the power even through the power band and not shred the 5spd trans

my mom got diagnosed with brain cancer unexpectedly and it puts things into perspective.

It's the metal part between the actual hood scoop and the intercooler. What it does is direct the flow from the outside over the intercooler. Without it, your intercooler is just floating in the wind (aka not useful).

When you change from a WRX intercooler to an STi unit, you need the change the splitter and shroud because the old one won't fit.

You can also easily modify your splitter to work for the STI intercooler. Took me 5 mins to make mine conform to the entire scoop to fit my TurboXS intercooler.

How'd you do that!? And OHHHH the splitter is the "lines" that come from top of hood scoop to the hood area? And the sti tmic won't just bolt on to the stock area?
Glad I'm asking these questions!

......

the splitter is "inside" the hood scoop.

Lines? The splitter is the black piece of metal inside the scoop that directs air flow over the intercooler.

Any recommendations of a manufacturer that makes a splitter? Or could I just use an sti splitter if I'm using an sti tmic?

It's probably easiest to use an STi splitter, although a bit of cutting might be necessary if you are not using an STi hood scoop.

There are other options, but they're more expensive.

I'm running the sti tmic but with the wrx splitter I think. I pretty much have the same setup as chitownej wants. I bought the car as is an am still learning about it. Thanks.

I thought you meant splitter as in when you're looking at hood scoop there's those rows like the 4 or 5, that's what I thought you were talking about, I get that it'd the black piece behind there....hopefully I can modify it to work how do ya do that??

I ran a Vf48 on my 07 wrx for three years, the last year with meth. The second summer my 3rd gear decided to leave me (car see's a few 1/4 mile track days a year) which I then upgraded to the 6spd.
The car with just the turbo, sti tmic, walbro 255 and an e-tune got me a best time of 12.81 on all season street tires. I never got to run the vf with the meth tune, but it was a good bit quicker than without. The vf is a great jump in power over the td04, you will love it.
I just upgraded to much larger this year after my stock ej255 lost a ringland and I went to a built engine.

Well....I don't track or autox, I'm a college student and really it's a daily driver for me but I commute I back roads so that's when I get to have fun
What dyno numbers did you get with that setup?
VF48, sti tmic, wal FP, TBE and intake too I'm assuming on the 07 Wrx?

The splitter is a horizontal plane that attaches under the scoop and behind the vertical vanes at the mouth. IIRC the WRX doesn't really have a splitter. It's not needed with the smaller TMIC.

The splitter's purpose is to direct airflow evenly over the intercooler. Without it the air would pile up at the back of the scoop and not flow over the entire intercooler. Just FYI, your hood scoop is the same as the STI for your year, so you don't need to replace it. The splitter and the boot (that seals around the intercooler when the hood is down) can be had at subarugenuineparts.com.

Okay I gotcha, so the splitter is needed then? How do you modify the Wrx one to be like an sti like the one person was saying??

Look up some threads on it. Essentially you'll cut the splitter and form it to the scoop (because it doesn't sit all the way in it), but you might be better off just buying one.
