wow, i'm kind of embarrassed. I did both seats today after finally figuring out how to unhook the fabric on the bottom...I spent about 1 hour figuring out the drivers side and looking at things. the passenger side literally took me 7-8 minutes start to finish.
1. unzip the sides 2. unhook the bottom fabric by pulling it forward and then down. you will feel the seem where the front and back meet, that is where you need to seperate it. 3. unhook seat heater from bottom, it is a green plug 4. roll up back fabric until you see the metal rings. use a screwdriver and seperate them and then finish rolling the fabric up as high as it will go. 5. there are 4 metal hooks, 2 per side, remove them 5a. there are 2 more metal rings that hold the springs to the foam, leave them alone, you dont need to remove them, i did on the drivers side and it is a pain to get them back 6. stick your head in the seat to see where the hooks are, then push up on one side at a time and remove them. 7. you can snake your hand up into the seat and install the new bushings press firmly they are a little tough to get in until you figure it out. 1 side has to go first. if you get them they will snap into place. 8. put the hooks back into the new bushings 9. reconnect the 4 side hooks. 10. zip up the sides 11. reconnect the seat heater 12. fold the bottom piece over itself and reinstall. 13. profit! these instructions took me longer to type than it did for me to install the passenger side bushings. you might also see that the the lower set of hooks has worn through the paper insulation, i wrapped a piece of a rag and zip tied it in place to provide some insulation just in case. time for a test drive! i hope it is fixed, the outside lower lumbar hook was loose on my drivers seat, which explains why it felt like my seat was twisted, hopefully that fixes the discomfort i was experiencing.

I just slipped some small vacuum hose over the hooks and taped the ends in place.
Thought about going to the dealer, but my local wanted money (!) to do the fix, and hadn't heard of the tsb. |

They would do the fix under warranty but wouldn't give me a courtesy car, wanted me to pay for a rental instead. Ultimately the scheduling wouldn't have worked out anyway, and I decided it wasn't worth my time for what is an easy fix really. Also SOA=/= SOC |

I think I will eventually be insulating everywhere there is metal on metal because I still get a little bit of squeaking if it is cold and I shift in the seat. But it is from the lower part of the back and not the top |

Do those bushings come individual or as packs of 2?

One question... are we talking only about the cloth seats here, or are the leathers a problem too? I may just keep my eyes open for a Limited interior if it is only the cloth seats that have issues.
My driver's seat just started squeaking just this morning. Unfortunately I just bought this car a couple of weeks ago...with 38,000 miles on it, so I am out of warranty. Damn... |

Interesting, thanks!
BTW, these are by far the worst front seats of any of the seven Subarus that I have owned. Even my 1995 Legacy wagon seats were better...and that was with 273,000 on the odometer. |

The seats definitely aren't one of the car's finer points.
Although I will say my 13 XV has decidedly firmer padding and tighter material. Still not awesome seats but much better and I rarely drive more than 40 miles in a typical day. |

Unfortunately my commute is nearly 90 miles round-trip in traffic, which was the reason for selling my 5MT Baja Turbo and getting this CVT Impreza. If I didn't think that I would lose the airbags and/or heated seats, I would swap the fronts out in a heartbeat. |

Yeah sadly swapping is out. Reverend and others have even tried. Maybe someone will wreck an xv and some seats will come up for sale. I know the padding in my xv's seats is way more supportive than my Impreza's. These are even *comfortable*. But if you did somehow find a deal on xv seats, make sure you try them.out at a dealer first. you may not find them to be an improvement.
The seats were so bad in my impreza, I wouldnt have bought the xv if it had the exact same. |

Were both your Impreza and XV Premiums? Limiteds? One of each? Just making sure it is apples to apples. Thanks for your input BTW. |

I fixed my squeaking seats this morning, but I found my lumbar/lower hooks to be making the noise not the uppers. They had eroded through the paper wrapping, used a heavy felt to go around the frame insulating the hooks. I had the freakin' worst time getting at my zippers as they had migrated into the hinge. The bottom foam roll needs to be squeezed together and then will pull apart. The circ clips wouldn't budge with a screw driver so I used two pilers and pulled them apart to release the mesh before the seat cover could come off all the way. I tried to post pics of the repair and the inside of the seat but I'm unauthorized, too new to the forum I guess? Good luck to anyone else doing the seat repair, no squeaking is worth the 25-30 minutes.

Badwedge: are you trying to upload the pics directly to the site, or are you hosting them elsewhere and unable to use the "img" tags to get them to post?
For reference, the site will not allow direct upload of pics; all pics need to be hosted elsewhere and referenced by an "img" tag. |

Hey All,
I'm at a loss. I checked and I have the bushings pre installed from the factory on all hooks. I still have a mysterious creaking/pop in my Drivers seat back that is inconsistent to say the least, but does appear pretty frequently. What I have noticed is it sounds as though the seat frame is shifting around and seems to increase when the interior cabin is warmer and the seat heaters are on. I pulled the seat back up and put extra tape around all four mid back hooks and looked up high and made sure the bushings were still in place up top where the top hooks go into the frame. After an hour back there, I would say it has improved, but that is only because I haven't driven much since. Has anyone had any type of metallic creak or popping sound etc? I am at 39k now and beyond warranty, and the dealer gave me the (we have our upholstery guy do those repairs and we can't hear it) crap. The noise seems to happen when I make turns and my body weight shifts...I'm light so this surprises me. I also have noticed that it happens when the seat becomes unweighted as when I am braking and coming to a light. I can sometimes get it to creak or pop when I just sit, but it is harder. Driving is usually what brings it out and it appears at random but always tied to my weight shifting. Any thoughts? I don't think the seat back springs/hook assembly is it. The junctures are taped. I tried dripping some tri flow in the corner hinge area but not sure that did any good at all. |

Passenger side seat is now the squeakier one. Maybe my weight killed the squeaker on the Driver's side, or forced it to relocate to the other side.
