Cool. I have 20 points in ESP. How do I get to Packwood?
I can’t afford to ask to borrow my friend’s truck again and I couldn’t afford the gas anyways. There aren’t enough E85 stations to make it. I don’t have an access to a tuner and I don’t have money anyways. But, I do have an accessport and racetuner. Hmmm. I wonder if I could tune it for 91 octane. Risky but whatever. Downloaded a stage 2 91 octane map and after a few iterations, injector scaling, etc. I had what I felt was safe enough to try to make it to Packwood…nervous for sure. It’s something like 1200 miles to Packwood from S.D. 18 hours or some ****. Daunting for a car that breaks when you look at it. Due to the closeness of the Farmington Pro and the Packwood Pro my contingency tires would be delivered on the Friday I would arrive in Packwood. Oh well this would be a blessing later. I always wanted to go to Packwood. Kind of a personal autox bucket list. Karen was going again this year. Had. To. Be. Done. I need a 2nd pacific pro! Loaded the car up with everything I could carry and left S.D. at around 8 a.m. Thursday. I had $600.00 cash for the trip. I have AAA 200 mile tow. I told myself once I’m out of that range I’m on my own and committed. Well the first 200 miles or so I was very nervous, every little noise worried me. The Falken azenis I have are bald, cupped, and blistered. They trammel horribly. I made it up and over the grapevine north of L.A. Stopped for gas and realized I was getting ~28 mpg. Awesome. Now I will enter the devils bunghole which is the 5 from the grapevine to redding, ca. It’s 9000 degrees I have no A/C, no cruise control, no radio, and the magnaflow drones awfully. And this seat. This momo start seat. Designed by the Marquis De Sade himself is effin me in the A! Other than that the cruise went well. I texted Billy at some point to see if he could call surgeline and see if someone had a spare diff they wanted to sell. He came back with a yes. Now everything becomes based on arriving in Portland precisely at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning. This is reason 5,436,825 that Billy is the man. I escaped the devils ******* and made it up/through Mt. Shasta, it was much cooler and I welcomed it. Sun was beginning to set and I wondered how far I would go. Knowing I wanted to be a few hours south of Portland when I woke up. Ended up stopping in Grants Pass around 11:30 p.m. long day, exhausted. Found a hotel 6 that seemed to be tweaker central. I was worried about the $45.00 + buying the diff but I wanted a shower and a bed for a bit. Parked the car where I could see it, walked to the gas station and bought a tall can Tecate’. Keepin’ it classy. Texted Karen to see how she was getting along on her journey and passed the eff out. Friday Morn, uneventful. Breakfast, gas, I’m getting 28-30 mpg’s now. I brought my lap top and spent most of the initial day tuning it more. Pulled up to surgeline at about 9:55, nice. Had to wait a bit as the guy wasn’t in yet but after about 20 minutes I had a spare diif and was on my way. (they confirmed it was from an 09 and would work, more on that later) Through Portland (lots o’ water) and finish it with a 2 lane 2 hours east to Packwood. I was carrying 25 gallons of e85 with me. I would need to run it out before arrival. I calculated that I would get around 360 miles on a full tank. I based my last stop for fuel on that number, figuring if I ran out I had E. No big thing. I think the 2 lane is called the 12 that leads you towards Mt. Rainier. Absolutely gorgeous. I enjoyed it a lot. The fuel light came on 60 miles from the sight. Hmmm. Made it, rolled past the site and went and got some lunch. Went to the grocery and liquor store for beer. Got to the site (covered paddock/old lumber mill) Annie had a spot for me. Unloaded/tech’d. Found Grady. He likes cigars so I got a couple for him as thanks. Serendipitous as he had smoked his last one. I offered him the car even though we had a class. He graciously declined saying, “you still need to drive it home.” Did a couple practice starts to see how the surface was, parked the car, and started drinking. In the meantime Karen gets there. Help her unpack her car and change her tires. We had more beers. ***61514; Sam showed up, my biggest concern. I wanted the full 20 and didn’t want to be cockblocked and show up to the finale with less than full points. Oh well. Set my tent up early to avoid doing it drunk. Walked the courses, again can’t commit them to memory. Oh well, enjoy the scenery of Packwood and the people. Off to bed. I’ll deal with the courses in the morning. Morning came quickly. Mostly because the birds that roost in the open ended buildings, apparently wake up at 4 a.m.. The noises they made also sounded like bacon being fried. To my tired mind I thought there was a chance of bacon. The realization of no bacon both vexed and annoyed me. I guess ham sammiches is my breakfast. It was pretty cool out for morning sessions. The semi-heat cycled BFG’s sucked like the suckiest bunch of suck sucks that ever sucked. Morning sessions done I was in 4th again. Saturday afternoon would be my best shot. It was around 80* in the afternoon and for the first time ever I did pre launch burnouts. The temperature + that allowed me to drop time. After Sat afternoon I was in 1st with ~.800 advantage. Would it hold through Sunday? Don’t know. But they have to sleep on it, I don’t. Saturday night in paddock was a lot of fun. Exhausted I went to bed kind of early. Sunday morning…..hello bacon birds! I didn’t improve Sunday morning but luckily my competitors didn’t improve enough either. 2 more tires, $150.00 from Subaru and a trip to the challenge. Coned out of the challenge round 3. Big mistake. Oh well. Hung out, helped Karen get packed up as well and headed out around 4 p.m. for the long drive home. Helped by the 45 total points I would carry to the finale. I ran the tank down to the low fuel light on E85, stopped at the gas station to fill with 91, switched maps and was on my way. Went to make a pass and realized the clutch was slipping in 5th…hmm it would need to be dealt with later. I made it as far as Mt. Shasta which has an elevation of ~4000 feet. Decided to find a parking lot and try to sleep in the back seat. It was late and I found a dark spot, fell asleep. About an hour later I was awoke by what sounded, to me, like a tree or something very large falling by the car. Laid there for a bit then heard, bag bag bag, can can can, bag can can bag. I’m like who in the f is sorting trash next to my car at 2 am.? Do I want to know? All my windows were down and I sat up to look a black bear in the eye about 10 feet from the car. We looked at each other briefly. I was thinking my car has food in it, I’m food. And all I have is my car keys in my hand. He went back to fishing through the contents of the cement garbage can he knocked over. I had a couple problems. There was a bear outside my car and I had a harness bar and race seats with easy way over them. Oh well, I got out on the side he was on, because the other door was blocked by **** in the car, walked around the rear of the car hopped in the front door, rolled up the windows, fired it up, and left. I finished the rest of the trip straight through. Made it home without incident, had a beer, and passed out.

Getting to nationals: a major obstacle.
How do you even contemplate driving this car 1550 miles one way? Turns out it’s not a rational decision but one of necessity. When I got back from Packwood I had a few problems. The rear cusco sounded like a rock tumbler on low speed, tight turns. The clutch was slipping. I needed to rebuild a fresh trans prior to the trip. I also sold all my BFG tries to get a set of hoosiers and fund my trip. I removed the rear pumpkin and threw the one I picked up in Portland to save the cusco from the miles. Went for a test drive. Low speed, all was fine. Ordered a solid disc from ACT because I didn’t have the extra 50 for a sprung. Waited till it showed up, dropped the trans, rebuilt my spare box, and buttoned it all back up. Should be good. Left Ramona around 6 p.m. Wednesday, got 12 miles from the house, the car started shaking, the right front locked up, so I pulled it off the road. Called Bret to pick me up, came back took the brakes apart, checked the wheel bearing. Tried again, same spot, same thing. Had Bret pick me up. Pulled the plug on nationals and went to bed. Woke up thinking about what I had changed…the diff, that diff. Pulled it out put the other one in and left around 10 a.m. Thursday morning. I was behind. I left with $580.00 knowing I wouldn’t get paid for another week. Nervous I made it to the San Bernardino’s and into Barstow. Once I was there I was passed my 200 mile mark and committed. Luckily there was a little rain in Barstow so it wasn’t that hot. But, Once I hit Nevada, holy ****. I had the ghetto A/C going. The wet towel wrapped around my neck with the cooler in the passengers seat to replenish it. Made it through Nevada, into Utah (beautiful, into Colorado..cooler going well. Car was not skipping a beat. Again ~30mpg’s The sun had dipped and I think I hit Grand Junction around 11:30. I was trying to make Denver but that was still a ways off. Driving through the mountains at night was interesting. I was enjoying the empty road for the most part and the cooler temps. San Diego is so congested. It was nice to just blast unimpeded. At some point I decide Denver wasn’t the goal so I began to look around for places to stop. I stopped in Eagle, Co which is around 6600’. It was probably 60* but felt like 20* after driving through Ca, Nv, and some of Ut. Found a rest area crawled up on the tires stacked in the back seat and tried to sleep. The tires were only about a foot below the roof. It was uncomfortable. I thought about sleeping outside but 1. I was at a pretty packed rest area and 2. BEARS!! After about an hour and a half I gave up and decided to finish the drive. I hit Denver at Sunrise and continued on down into the plains of Nebraska. God, it was hot. The last 300 miles I actually thought about stopping/quitting. Something had blown into my right eye, I couldn’t get it out. I started to dump water in it and was at the point where I was googling optometrist when :ahhhhhhhhhhhh: I worked it out. Finally, I only have an hour left. Did I mention it was hot? Made it into Lincoln and headed to the E85 station. I miscalculated and still had 3/8 of a tank but, I wasn’t really thinking so I filled it up, switched maps, bought some ice, and headed to the airport. 67% E this will have to be addressed. |

Ah Nationals.
Haven't been here in 2 years. Just driving on-site was a victory to me. Everything else would be icing. I left Ramona at 10 a.m. thorsday and arrived in Lincoln at 4 p.m. Friday. ***61514; Found the NWOR paddock. Unpacked, changed wheels, and tried to relax. I was beat. I was going to do some practice starts but was so out of it I never made it. Settled into hanging with the old crew. So good to see everyone. I was originally going to camp onsite. Thank god Jay and Ed hooked me up with a spot with them at the quality. It would have been a brutal week without that. I knew if I made it there everything else would work. I just had to get there. Friday ended with some course walks and I hitchhiked a ride to the hotel. Courses were long so I only walked them once a side. I'm lazy. Saturday morning I was up early and went down to the breakfast area. This begins my week of being in the wind when it comes to rides. Whenever, wherever an opportunity presents itself I'm going with it. It was very relaxing to me. Of course there you really don't have to look too hard for someone going your direction. Always the most awesome extended family. Got a ride to the site, walked each side one more time, and was as ready as I could be. Still didn't like that the car was down on Ethanol content but I would just see how it felt in the a.m. session. Finale!!! A.M. sessions went fine. I really enjoyed the longer courses. I was a bit back Saturday morning (.084) but wasn't too concerned with it as the forecast was just more hottttt. I wasn't happy with the way the car was launching. The solid disc with the light weight flywheel was not getting it at my normal 5600 rpm launch Saturday morning. It was a turd in the 60'. Also, the car was down on power because of my hasty decision Friday night. So I***8230;found an in descript off site location and drain the almost (full) tank into some grass and drove to the station again and put 10 gallons of ethanol in it. 75% now we're getting there. I also upped the LC to 6000 for the afternoon. Guess we'll see what happens. Saturday afternoon sessions were better. I dropped a lot of time. The car was still launching like poo but the power was up. At the end I was .909 up. Holy crap, that is more than the margin of the 60 foots. Feeling pretty good I spent the night drinking beer and hanging out. My competitors needed to figure out how to make up a second or more. I didn't. Sunday morning came. Even though I was concerned about the car's health I bumped the LC to almost factory redline. It launched a bit better but through a series of odd occurrences I didn't improve. First left side run was, well, the first left side run. No improvement. First right side run there was an area at the finish everyone was tightening up on. This now crossed 2 uneven slabs by about an 1.5". It caused my car to start bucking. I actually thought the car was going to flip. To prevent it I just let it do its thing. As a result. I backed it through the lights. Haha. Later my sister, who drove from Indiana to see me and watch, said. "what were you thinking when the car almost flipped over?" I said "that the car was going to flip over and I really didn't want that." So 2 runs left and I know people are picking up time. A little shaken I was on a good left side run and blew the turn before the finish. Last right side I was worried about the finish so I drove out and around the crack. No improvement. Didn't matter, I held on. Won the finale by .065. I wanted to crush everyone, of course, going into nationals. In the end I was happy/relieved. 8 tires from hoosier, $150.00 from Subaru, and another Pro-Solo cup. Going into the challenge I had more points than ever but would need A LOT of luck to pull it off. Round 1 Eric's BMW broke, round 2 outdrove Robert, Round 3 I tried on second runs to get Kevin with my LC, didn't work. He pulled a .500 to my .511. Outdrove me. Awesome stuff. He deserved that win. ***61514; I think that left me in 4th overall for the year. For doing 3 pro-solos that's not too shabby. I broke out by .800 in the challenge I was concerned with having fresh tires for nationals so I stopped to ask the Hoosier boys Sunday if it would be an issue to get contingency tires off the trailer. They said yep, come back tomorrow. Stoked, I went to the banquet. Of course I hitchhiked there and back. 3 days of doing nothing, really, and watching cars. ***61514;***61514;***61514; ohh and beer So Monday I went to the Hoosier truck with my tires***8230;now they have a problem with it. Now I have a problem. It's labor day I won't see them till Thursday, normal freight, I'm absolutely broke. I called Billy. So overnight was $850.00 lol***8230;nope. Standard shipping. Engage back pocket plan. Mark S offered a set if I replaced them. Found him but he already used 2. So I took 2 for the front, which I would replace Thursday and have the other 2 new ones mounted for the front Friday. Awesome. I took the opportunity of the 2.5 days down to throw the car on jackstands and check everything. It made it through the pro-solo mechanically but that bouncing episode was violent so I didn't want to risk handing Billy a ****ty car. Everything checked out that I could see. So I just relaxed, hung out and cheered on the friends/classes that were running Tue/Wed. Back to course walking briefly, I was running west first so I walked it Monday night. I really was struggling with familiarity with the car and it's speed through elements. I was doing my best to memorize the course. I also told myself I would not look at the east course until we were done running east. Billy showed up On Wednesday and we quickly arranged for him to run the TNT course at 4 p.m. As a back story Billy hadn't driven the car or autox'd since Nationals 2010. A lot of the desire for me to get to nationals was to see and drive with him. So much awesome! Spending time with everyone was what I came for. Philly crew!!!! I really had no expectations. I hadn't been here in 2 years. I assume everyone is going faster in class. East course was certainly speed maintenance and I'm watching the early times. 58, 55, 56, 54.0xx OK **** just happened. Billy goes out and runs a 56.9xx, I wait. My first run is a 54.474 ok I can work with that, I just hope they don't start dropping seconds. My 2nd run felt quick but I hit a cone and screwed the finish so it was slower, scratch. I really feel that would've been the 53.xxx a lot of others were looking for without the screwed finish sequence. So now 3rd runs and I'm kind of backed in a corner. I did the best I could and came in with a 54.174, in 3rd place for the day. The tires were very, very hot at this point, mental note for tomorrow. Less than .200 behind first. Luckily none of the others sped up significantly. I was in 3rd, Billy was in 8th. Corey said that it was a really solid run for as hot as the tires were. That made me feel good. But, in my mind I was thinking there is no way a first year interloper, in the class, is going to take this away. Especially in a car the size of a house. I had to get my mind right for the next course. I had to remember it. I worked 5th heat which sucked, it ran late***8230;tired we got to walk the east course twice Thursday night. We got the new tires mounted up swapped them out and was ready for Friday morn. For a couple days everyone was saying the east course would benefit my car. Walking I still didn't see it. What I did see was the breaking zones. My car is lighter and narrower than most in grid. I thought it would come down to who hit every braking zone correctly. If I could gain a .100 in all 6 braking areas I may have a shot. Oh well, off to downtown, some dinner, and sleep. Deal with tomorrow, tomorrow. Last edited by mccanixx; 09-25-2013 at 11:25 AM. |

Friday
Walked the course two more times. Got it. Excited. Nervous. Line them up. I asked Billy to tell me if we could take the porta-potty sweeper flat. I may be crazy but I'm not stupid. ***61514; I watched everyone's first runs***8230;ok***8230;ok. Let's go. I had 2 thoughts. Don't hit the first cone on course and don't spin in the first sweeper. Went out, felt like I broke too early everywhere, came in with a 72.9xx. Holy crap that felt slow. I went from 3rd to 1st on my first run. ****. Just. Got. Real. Karen came over to see if my hands were shaking. They were but, I hid it well enough to appear that they weren't. Water the tires, water the intercooler. It was still very hot out. We had a good sized crew going and it was very appreciated and beneficial. Billy dropped a lot of time on his 2nd run. My turn. I did everything the same except focused on corner exits and earlier power delivery. Ended up popping the rev limiter way before the porta potty sweeper, which caused me to lift a bit as a precaution. Nailed most everything else. I heard/felt the left rear run over the base of the 2nd cone of the finish slalom, cone 600. Came through with a 72.1xx scratch. Holy ****. I was still in the lead at this point. Water the tires, effin water everything!! 2nd place competitor drops enough time on his 3rd run to put me .019 behind in 2nd place. Seriously, I've driven thousands of miles..I have the raw time and I'm going to be the guy who comes home with 2nd place by .019 because I choke? I fail? I hit something? No effin way. The crew was busy with the car, there was a person on each tire after Billy's 3rd run, I walked away to try to get my head together. All I thought about was no matter what I can't go out and try to run a conservative time. I have to run at 10/10ths. I had lost a challenge run to Corey in 2007 because I had the lead and backed off. It is very hard to gauge. So just run. 3rd run, down by .019, you have the speed, just do everything perfect, give the cones a bit of extra room. No pressure. Went out and didn't try anything really different. Hit the braking zones, backside the apexes, drive out. I got late in the optional slalom, tried to make it up, which made me push in the sweeper after. Gathered it up. **** you cone 600. Don't blow the finish***8230;done. 72.2xx Wow just like that and backed up the 2nd run time. 3 seasons in ESP, lots of broken parts, tons of money. Drive the car, spend ~ $600, and it's yours. Billy went from 8th to 5th day 2. That is just remarkable to me! I wish he had gotten more time in the car this year. Preparation and determination. That's all. I couldn't believe the people around the car. All the support and help at/and through Nationals was very much appreciated. Went to the banquet and then to buzzards one last time, all an awesome memorable experience. Billy put me up the last night since Jay and Ed left Friday morning. Left Lincoln at 6 a.m. Saturday. My goal was St George Utah. Because of rain I stopped about 140 mile north in Beaver, Utah. Since I got paid Friday morn I got a hotel room ***61514; Slept about four hours, picked up my obligatory I <3 beaver sticker and motored on. Ran the car out of oil in Barstow (was being lazy at fill-ups and not checking), contemplated calling AAA and riding the last 200 miles in the A/C'd comfort of a flatbed. Decided to man up, put oil in the car and finished it up. Hit home at 11:30 Sunday morning. I haven't started the car since. My only mission was to get to nationals everything else has just been a blessing. I figure if you never give up, you'll never lose. Last edited by mccanixx; 09-25-2013 at 11:29 AM. |

So what's next, anyways? I'm going to stay in ESP for next year. The cars will probably move to ASP in 2015. With that said to run for it next year the car will need to be faster. So we'll see what time and money allow. |

As a previous ESP Subaru driver, I cannot tell you how proud I am of you. You did what many thought was impossible just a couple years ago. Great Job!
