I owned an 08 WRX (09 to 13. Bought it new from the dealership for $6k off sticker). Basically, there's a reason they go for so cheap.

2008 was the MY where the new body style and engine were introduced but the old turbo was kept. It was 220bhp, and took forever for the turbo to spool (it spooled, iirc, around 3.9k).

2009 they put a different turbo in and the bhp jumped to 260 and also the spool came on much faster.

They're asking WAY too much for a 136k mile car in the first place, as well. To get it to act like an 09, you'd need a different turbo and then tune, just for starters.

Now, if they were offering it for $7k, I'd say the deal had potential, but close to $10k?

Yeah right. And I loved my little 08 while I had it. First manual car that I owned (I'd been taught stick when learning to drive) for myself. However, its design had the worst of the GR and GD designs merged with none of either's benefits.

How's the maintenance? Was oil always changed when needed? Other fluids regularly checked?

Because bone stock or not, tardy on the maintenance combined with hard driving will mean you'd be getting a used vehicle with a much much shorter lifespan than you'd expected.

As long as you know what you're getting, and that its one of the least capable WRXs out there, and it's one of the best prices for the condition you can find, go ahead.

Just be aware that it drives like a sluggish GTI than a WRX. Not very much turbo oomph at all... ever.

I was thinking it will be simple to modify and upgrade later on when I was ready for it

Intake and no tune is a red flag.

Because, installing an aftermarket intake on this generation throws the MAF scaling off, since the diameter of the intake is different than that of the stock intake. This means the car will be getting a different amount of air than it thinks, thus causing problems with the A/F. At idle it may correct itself, but under open loop fueling conditions it will not be able to correct itself. Instead the ECU is relying on believing that the MAF is measuring the right amount of air, which in the case of having an aftermarket intake, it is not. This results in a lean condition under high load. Lean conditions are much worse than rich conditions generally speaking. Finally, Boom.
