Hey Ben,
I just purchased my first Subaru, and first STI at that, on the 18th. I am in love with the car almost as much as I am with my wife. Haha, that being said the only thing I don't like about it is the key setup. I am excited to have found this post and know the possibility of having a switchblade key. Will you please PM me for my email info as I would be glad to purchase the parts from you.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Thanks, Kravur

Default transponder programming

Just wanted to say this is a great mod to do. I also wanted to let everyone know what I found out when doing this mod. I got 2 keys (CWTWB1U811), and 2 key shells. I assembled the shells with the legacy remote and transponder, then I got the blades milled at a local lock smith. Then decided to see if the local Subie dealer would try to program the transponders to my car. (I didn't want to cut up my original key for the transponders.) We have verified that they do work. The only thing is you cannot program the transponders at home, they need to be done at the dealership.

So if I get the key and shell and get It cut. Subaru can program a new transponder for my car? And my old key will work still?

How much did it cost for them to program the new transponders??

Yes. Your old keys will still work. Just remember that your car can only hold a max of 4 keys. So I decided to drop my valet key. They told me that they charge $60 to do the programming, but told me if it didn't work they wouldn't charge me. I guess they were curious as I was to see if the transponders would work.

Oh okay that's fine then. I only have one key anyway! :/ and that's not that much so I think I'll do it! Oh btw. Did you buy your key and shells from the op? If not where did you get them from? thanks!

I'm having trouble finding a place to cut my blank, I live in the Detroit area and have called several lock smiths. Non of them seem to do it. I'm looking for any recommendations if you have any.

About $10 for each shell. Then like $15 - $20 for each key. I got legacy keys that were already cut. Cheaper than new blank keys.

That is a good deal. Not to discourage any one but just as a word of warning, the eBay stuff is hit or miss. I was ordering from eBay but in the long run only about 50% didn't have issues or were the wrong part. I now only get brand new ones from the dealer so I know they will work.

Congrats! It's scary, but really not too hard. Just have to take your time.

Just a FYI, theres a seller on ebay offering a "subaru kit" comes with both a laser cut blank and a regular key blank already altered to fit in the flip housing. I grabbed one to do this mod, that way i can keep my stock keys. Should be quick and easy since my year didnt get the key chips. If it doesnt work, oh well only $15.

The shell in that listing should be the same one I used, but the way it is posted is quite misleading. They show the completed flip key and even the donor Legacy style key you will need, which are not included in the sale. This is explained later on in the large paragraph of text, but I believe it is intended to be misleading.

Push button is cool, but generally much more expensive than a flip key setup.

Guys, do the right thing here. We have a NASIOC member who put time into sourcing the parts, writing up the process, and coming back to the thread to help out. How should we thank him? By going through him to get the parts.

Might be a slightly more expensive route but nobody will innovate if they lose their benefit through people sourcing the parts elsewhere.

Thank goodness I found this thread. I've found that the dangling key fob will lodge against my knee forcing me to adjust my knee while I'm driving (especially during heel/toe). It's only happened a few times but it's enough to be annoying.

Unfortunately I don't have enough legitimate posts to email the original poster. If you see this can you please email. I agree with phenryiv1 that we should support those users who take the time do the write-ups.

I clicked on the Amazon link for the flip key housing and noticed that it's for a VW/Audi key fob. But I noticed that it doesn't have the 3 button configuration in the original picture. Does that link still take you to the correct item?

TIA

Hey xluben, Congrats on such a successful thread. Over a year later and 50+ pages, your write up is still a great hit. Like many people here, could you send me a PM, I'm too new to send you an email and would love to get the flip key housing and legacy key from you for my 2012 wrx hatch

I am very interested as well. I normally scope the forums instead of post. I picked up a 2013 STi and would like to do this. Could you please send me a message since I can't send one to you. I dont want to troll the forums for five more posts.
