Default 2015 WRXcvt engine surges

For awhile now I've been having these annoying power surges, usually when getting onto and up to high way speeds. The car is completely stock and use premium gas. Happens wether full throttle or not and you can usually feel when it's about to start happening because the rpms go higher than usual for the amount of throttle being used. I tried to have the Subaru shop take a look and see what's wrong but they couldn't replicate it and found nothing wrong, in an attempt to fix it they pulled the plugs and reset the computer. From talking with people in my area that own Subaru cvts this isn't an issue any of them have been having. The videos were taking from two separate incidents tonight and no change on my part with the throttle. If anyone has any ideas as to what is going on I'd love to know. Thank you!

So are you not pushing in the throttle after the first rev and the rest of rev spikes are the car independently doing it? That would scare the **** out of me.
Or is it just more power then youre used to?

That's all the car. After I feel the initial spike I get off the throttle to bring the rpms back down, sometimes after doing so the problem won't occur but other times getting back on the throttle brings it right back to doing that. Definitely not afraid of power but have never had or been a car where this is an issue. Trying to get the videos uploaded now

Hell no thats not normal! Throttle should only respond if you touch it. Turbo or not lol
What happens if you brake when it surges? Does it stop it?

As soon as I'm off the throttle it stops. And to be clear, that is happening with the accelerator pressed but not moving it. When that was happening tonight I was around 60% throttle according to the display

I think i understand now, so its reving up when your at a constant throttle position. Like cruising on the hwy and the it starts to jump for no reason? Right? For a second i thought it was just reving on its own I was like holy ****!! Lol

Still, its not normal to rev up when your not telling it to.

Hell no. I would be a richer man if that was the case. To clear it up, majority of the time this happens when getting onto a highway or speeding up and changing lanes. Once I accelerate I'll feel a surge and see the rpms go way past where there supposed to be for the amount of throttle I'm giving it. After letting off the throttle the rpms drop back down to idle. Sometimes getting back on the throttle things will work correctly, other times what you see if the video is what happens. Again to fix it need to get off the throttle then try it again.

The TC is part of the tranny...Hopefully it's just the converter and not the bands of the transmission itself...don't know much about the cvt...hopefully you're under 36,000 miles?

Right on, well that's fortunate...sounds like it's busted but not all the way...I'd go rag that ho out and break it all the way, then they will have to fix the problem.

Yeah I'm going to do that but will honestly probably get another we couldn't replicate it or couldn't find the issue.

There is a tech tip that talks about surging issues if the oil is over filled. If I remember right I had a similar issue with a forester xt. I ended up having to do a tranny relearn and issue went away.

Did you ever figure out what was causing the issue? I’m having a similar issue with my 2015 WRX with a CVT. But mine has a stage 1 tune and intake so I’m afraid the dealership will make a big deal out of that.

It's a 2015. You have warranty to 100,000mi / 8 or 10 yrs on that transmission.

What you're describing is a shot CVT transmission. Get it replaced under warranty and if the car is perfect until the rest of your lease consider keeping it; if it's anything less than perfect dump it on Subaru at the end of your lease.

Sounds like a slipping CVT belt.

it's normal, traction control is holding the tranny back.
Try it with the traction control off (push once).

Fyi, simple way to test if your belt is slipping or not, is put in Drive with brake, and rev the engine.
The rpm should not pass 3k, if it passes 3k then your tranny is going out.
