Default I'm Stupid and I voided my warranty horror stories

I have been seeing brand new 2011+ wrx/sti already installing performance parts and flashing their ECU with Cobb's AP and blowing up their tranny or motor. Please share with the community your horror stories so other future prospecters don't do what you did.

"I bought a new car. It had a warranty until I did things to it that I knew would most likely be the cause of a denied warranty claim. Then it broke and they didn't fix my car for free. Then I posted on NABISCO about how much it sucks that they wouldn't cover it."

-Posters in this thread.
Moral of the story, want a warranty? Leave your car alone.

My warranty is one of the biggest reasons I haven't done anything big to my car yet. I just payed out the A$$ for the car, I don't want to be paying for repairs too.

I modded both my WRX and STI and never had an issue with either one. Sorry I didn't have anything cool to read.

This, why when you buy even a used car, you buy it STOCK. No modded car has much value really, except for the parts, but you can't add to the kbb cause of go fast parts stuff, it takes value away. I see people adding to the kbb due to a mod list a miles long. who wants all that stuff to fail, it does fail higher rate than stock stuff. I will buy my cars stock, and keep them til they hit 200k.

I went stage 1 right after break in. a friend if mine that owns a shop bought his 2011 sti with the AP in his pocket and flashed it as soon as he left. He went stage 2 a month later. Lol no problems though on either of ours. Cobb tune is more reliable for the car, its not tuned with emissions in mind anymore, therefore not leaned out.

I put 112,000 miles on the firs, 60,000 on the second and now a few thousand on my third WRX and never once had to have any warranty work done. If I were to buy a new one, I wouldn't hesitate to do any minor mods up to stage two right after breaking it in. Just do it right and drive it properly and it's not likely to break. Of the small percentage of major failures, you have to realize that a percentage of the ones that say they never abused the car and never modded them are liars.

clutch went out on my 08 at 17k miles...have 6 other manuals including 2 other subarus that have never had any problems. In other words, the people above who havent been put in this situation need to 'zip it'.

Ok then let's say for now, my futur plan would be:
Stage2 Cobb (AP+CAI+full TBE)
Kartboy STS
BC Coilover
Rest: esthetic mods

Let's say I need to get repair done (usually under warranty) my sunroof/fogging headlights/defect power window motor/etc (you get the point, nothing relative to the parts I installed....

Do you think they will void my warranty
because of those 3 aftermarket mods ?

I remember with my previous car: as long as the problem wasn't caused by the aftermarket parts, warranty was still covering anything.

Right now I have my Kartboy STS ready to install.
TBH.... I'm scare of installing it

I have not heard of one recent blown tranny since I bought my 2009 WRX in august 2009.

The only things that go boom on the cars with the mild mods these stories come from are the ****ty stock pistons busting a ring land and people destroying their clutch because they clueless try to launch their car like an idiot.

No blown gears though from everything i read. As for serious modding I have not heard anything either on transmissions going pop.

Take note:

Your warranty generally cannot be voided.

Your warranty claim however can be denied.

As basically stated by others, if you want to retain your warranty and keep it in full effect, do not modify your car. If you do modify, and something breaks as a result, be prepared to be 'self insured' (meaning you pay for it).

We have a whole section devoted to this. Head over to the warranty issues and SOA problems section, then look at the denial stickies at the top.

Ok I understand.
Let's say I have a Cobb stage 1 or 2 and I have problem to the motor/tranny, they might denied my claim.

But let's say I go there for a powerwindow motor problem, it will be covered by the warranty since it doesn't have anything to do with the cobb??

Yes, that is exactly it... But warranties ARE commonly voided, usually by people doing things they don't even realize. It isn't as common as it used to be, but cluster swaps... (wrx's swapping in STI clusters) That is an INSTANT 100% warranty void for everything. I believe an ECU swap on a newer subaru could also void the warranty, as mileage is recorded by the ECU.

IIRC, any form of racing voids the warranty also, at least in technical terms. SCCA auto-x events aren't generally defined as racing, you need to be head-to-head with another vehicle.

Exactly! When my speedo sensor gear shredded, Subaru paid to fix it even though I have a VF34 set-up.
