After driving to my friends and back tonight, driving slow and cruising on the freeway, this is one of the best cars I've ever driven. Most cars are very good at certain things. Either they are fun to drive, or they are relaxing and squishy, generally boring and wooden, others are just downright dull. The thing with this little car is that it balances between fun to drive and relaxing so well its subtle and amazing. Some days I want to mash the gas and fly around a corner (which happens to be often with me) the car happily complies and carves through the corner better than almost any other I've driven. Its power isn't special, it isn't fast, but its peppy and fun, and it will move out when it needs to a surprising bit faster than it actually needs to, so its by no means slow either.

The really impressive feat Subaru pulled off is that it is also a spectacularly fun and relaxing car to chill in. Driving home with the music cranked and the smooth ride, it's just a really nice place to be. It doesn't make you want to drive crazy fast, but it's fun if you decided to, yet it's almost as fun to just relax and enjoy the ride to your destination. I can honestly say I've never driven a car that strikes such a perfect balance between comfort, relaxation, and fun to drive factors, not to mention fantastic handling. I'm not sure how Subaru did it, but this car is actually quite a bit better than I realized when I first bought it. Except for the shifter. Those long throws and mushy feel suck. Like, after driving a BRZ, they suck a lot. But other than that, all I have to say about this car is...DAMN!
Well said!! But I also enjoy my cvt as much!!!

Agreed. I have the CVT Sport. Overall, it's a great vehicle. I couldn't exactly pinpoint what I liked about it at first, but I fully agree. It's very solid overall. I've driven everything from a 40's pickup to a Bentley. Every vehicle has it's niche. But this car is super practical, can haul a ton of stuff easily, and is comfortable. The ONLY thing I wish they offered was some variation of a WRX in THIS body style. The added power would be welcome. As I prefer this style and the refinements over my cousins 11 WRX hatch, but I definitely wouldn't mind a hair more power. Having that said, I'm excited to see how this car takes to some suspension work coming next month at Moore to spruce up the sportiness a tad.

Ditto, I love my 12 Sport Limited also but would gladly sacrifice a few mpg for just a slight bump in horsepower and torque. If the new WRX will offer any CVT option I am running down to my dealer and ordering one...Lol!

there is also a video that pretty much can be followed, the procedure is similar except you need to move both seats forward to find the 10mm bolts that hold the console down (toward the rear, on the sides, covered by a small plastic cover that you pop off). Also, you don't need snap ring pliers to remove the original shift lever with the Perrin adapter, just rotate it. It makes sense once you slide the adapter on. Oh, and you need a ruler with MM to set the height you prefer. I recommend closer to the shortest throw vs the other way (50mm vs 60mm).

So get a short shifter, it's an easy fix.

Thanks for the link. It looks simple enough. With the Perrin it looks like you don't even have to replace the shifter. Are they the only ones who make a kit like that? All the other ones I have seen have you replace the entire shifter.

Afaik, yes.

I like the cobb replacement, it isn't difficult to do, only 1 step further to remove a small ring that holds the shifter in place

I am going to be installing the spoiler at some point in the near future after I order it. I was looking at the installation instructions online and the statement below on the template confuses me. Where am I supposed to drill the holes? I'm going to use a punch to make drill points in the top of the trunk.

My question is, if I am not supposed to use the hole as a guide what am I supposed to use as the guide to drill the holes?

My personal opinion - coming from an Integra - is that the suspension seems a bit soft. I'm used to getting lots of feedback from the road through a stiffer suspension, and this car tends to mute a lot of the vibrations coming from the road. I also got a good feel for the understeer inherent in the vehicle, as I tried taking what seemed like an innocent turn at the speed limit and nearly curbed the car. I'd taken this same turn 100s of times before in my Integra, and had driven my Impreza for about 3 months already by this point; road conditions were dry, bare, and well above freezing.

The other thing is that the car can get quite squirrelly under heavy wind gusts. I took the vehicle on a road trip this past weekend, and the car was being pushed around all over the road by the 50-80 km/hr (30-50 MPH) wind gusts. However, that's to be expected with a vehicle this light, I suppose.

I also mentioned previously (possibly in another thread) that the brakes seem a bit underpowered. I know people swear its the tires (and the OEM tires are a whole other issue with me ) but I'm pretty sure it's the brakes. There's a subtle difference between grippy tires and good brakes.

That said, I agree with most of your assessment. It does seem to have a happy balance between the "fun" and "safe" aspects.

For reference purposes - and not sure how it maps up with the US models - I drive one with the "Touring Package" for the Canadian market (rear stabilzer bar, 16" wheels, steering wheel controls, paddle shifters).

If I still have this vehicle past its warranty period, things that will get changed are: stiffer suspension, better brakes. Winter tires for next year, and summer tires when these p.o.s. Yokos wear out.

^^ Completely agree.

I went from a track prepped 2011 Civic Si, so this car rides like a Cadillac in comparison. lol Can't quite decide if the handling woes you are describing is more suspension or tires.. I know it's a bit of both. Hopefully after doing beefier sways, springs, and better tires or better tires and slightly wider wheels if this'll help.. It seems that it will.

I love my 2012 sport but it needs red rally armor mud flaps and a light bar.

I cannot find a light bar / brush guard that isn't $400 any suggestions?

I am also waiting for a light bar might have to just have one custom made since I don't want some shoddy put together one.

In regards to the suspension yes the impreza rides like a luxury car which you appreciate when driving on crap nyc roads.

Haven't beefed up the suspension any, but wider wheels has made a world of a difference on mine! Then again I was going from stock 15" steel wheels to 17x8s off a 2011 WRX. Any girl will tell you 2 inches makes a difference.

hahaha I was actually considering going 2013 WRX 17x8's myself. Did you use the stock size WRX tires as well? Wanted to make sure they fit. Stock 17x7's run 205/50's.. Stock WRX 17x8's run 235/45's.. And when you got them, did they have the TPMS already installed? I was hoping the TPMS in the WRX wheels could be flashed to the Impreza for easy swapping since it's OEM Subaru..

One time swapping. If you need to install different wheels like winter wheels a dealer needs to redo the tpms.

Huh?

I was asking if the stock TPMS sensors in the WRX wheels could be flashed to the Impreza or if the Impreza requires a different one. And tire size that works for our car using 17x8's.

If I end up getting winter wheels/tires, I'm not worried about TPMS for those months. I ran my Si without them for two years. Personally, I find TPMS useless and annoying, but hey.. lol

And what are the mounting sizes (overall and depth) for the doors and tweeters? I know the doors are 6.5, but what depth is allowed? Was originally considering doing the Limited base screen radio with OEM Kicker upgrade, but that's almost the same price and going for a decent aftermarket setup..

That was kind of my point though. The car does oversteer a ton till you put the thicker sway bar on the back, which does actually completely neutralize oversteer/understeer, its rather impressive. Obviously the bigger wheels and smaller sidewalls help with handling and road feel as well. However, the suspension is a bit soft, and that's rather the point. Here we have a car that with a set of 17's, and an upgraded sway bar, will carve a corner with the best of its class, perhaps even better, then turn around and be a super comfortable yet controlled ride. I have trouble likening the suspension on this to a cadillac, since those things see a corner and kind of just keep going. It's closer to an upscale German car. I think you would really like the BRZ, its RWD, and has stiff suspension. It's probably a lot closer to the ultegra, and I can't speak for the way the auto distributes power to the front wheels vs the rear. All that aside though, with a few modifications in manual form this car is an incredibly good balance of two very distinct styles of car dynamics, and that is a rare find.

I've got the WRX wheels on mine. The '12-'13 Impreza won't recognize WRX TPMS sensors. I just took the ones out of my stock wheels and put 'em in my WRX wheels. No need to reflash, since they're already recognized by the vehicle! They will attach to the same valve stems in the WRX wheel, which is nice.

The tire size that I'm using on mine is 225/45R17. I'm running performance all-season tires. They work great so far!

Nice! Can you "theoretically" swap the stock 205/50 tires on the stock 17x7's onto the WRX 17x8's without it looking ridiculous as a temporary cure since my Yoko's are still brand new and I'm not trying to pay 700 for new tires right now? lol

Stupid question, but removing tpms... hard to do? do tires need to be off?

...im surprised i havent seen an answer to this already.

That I'm not sure of. I wouldn't think it'd be good putting tires on that are a whole inch thinner in width... but I'm no tire guru. Even if it did work, it might mess with your odometer/mph.

It's for the XV, but since its basically the same car it should fit...?

I've been looking for a tower brace also, but don't want to pay $400+ for the STI flexible one.

Don't think you can buy directly from the Ultra Racing site.

TPMS are mounted on the valve stem so yes, the tires have to come off, and then you'd have to re-balance the tires and then deal with the TPMS light being on...

Yes, tires must be removed to remove the TPM sensors.

My winter tires/wheels don't have TPMS. I live with the light for 5 months out of the year.
