Default New BMW 1 Series Spied

Quote:
These are the best spy pictures yet of the next-generation BMW 1-series.

The premium hatchback was captured in heavy disguise by our spy photograpers in Germany, but the pictures gave away subtle changes to the latest model’s styling. Previously, we have only seen test mules but these pictures show a fully working prototye.

The 1-series is expected to have a slightly extended wheelbase and wider track to create more interior room, especially for adult passengers in the back.

The model spied is likely to be the most powerful, the 135i, given away by its twin rear exhausts. In the present 1-series range, only the 130i hatch and 135i coupe have twin exhuasts, but these are coupled together. On this spied model, they are split, indicating a new styling point for the 1-series.

Its high-performance nature is also given away by the extra air intake seen at the front, while previous spy pictures have hinted at an all-wheel drive system being tested.

In previous spy pictures, the front end has been covered so this hints that this model’s engine needs more cooling. A mildly redesigned front-end features new headlights and a new bumper, while new lights also appear at the rear of the car. BMW’s famous kidney grille remains.

Engines are likely to be co-developed with PSA as the two firms further extend their relationship seen with Mini. The trend in downsizing and using turbocharged units is also set to feature in the new 1-series to meet tougher new emissions regulations and fuel consumption targets. The displacement should range from 1.4-litre to 2.0-litre.

Despite the downsizing, power is likely to go up across the range due to the use of direct injection and forced induction. BMW’s straigh-six engines could also make the line up.
Stop-start and electrical-regenerative systems should both feature, as should Efficient Dynamic’s technology including heat-recovery systems and solar panels. BMW claims the testing of thermoelectric generators and solar panels saved as much as five per cent in fuel consumption.

The hatchback should be going into production in the second quarter of 2011, with the coupe and convertible models set to follow later in the year. A shooting brake model and a high-performance M version could also make it into production.

Waaaaaaaay, way better. No more pregnant kitty belly on the ground.

$10 says this one's coming to North America with a diesel.

If this car can shed 300lbs in its next iteration I will have one in my driveway in 3 years time. A salesman sold me on a future BMW when after shooting the breeze (with a stated incapability to purchase anything) he had me flog an M3 at the wee age of 19.

Why can't they smooth out the body lines and get rid of that stupid hip line that runs through the door handles to the back end of the car?

IMO this camo'd version looks better than the current production version, which is sad.

It looks like they got rid of the bottom door "sag" which drives me insane everytime I see a 1 series on the road.

Needs larger fender flares like the old M- Coupe and a lower roof line... At this point, it looks like a miniature version of an X3.

This is just speculation, but the 135i has a twin tip exhaust on the driver side of the car, where as the car in the spy shots has exhaust on both sides of the car which is typically found on the M cars. So could the 1M be near, who knows?

I like the looks of the current 1 series we have here. I've seen quite a few around here and have no problem with them at all. Great looking car.

This camod one doesnt look like a finished car to me. It looks like they took a sawzall to the bumper for the exaust even. I'm a fan of some cars in hatch form, but not this one. Yes I know they already have a 1 series hatch in other countries.

335 runs dual tips (one per side) too, it's just a styling change.

I'll take your money now...
1 - hatch
2 - diesel..
As much as I'd like hatch diesel here, I dont think BMW will do it..

Maybe, but BMW's head honcho has stated that he wants to expand diesel model sales here in USofA.

So, I'm not ready to pay-up just yet.

Because they'll offer one through their dealer networks in Europe and will need to test the car with a trailer to make sure it doesn't do anything wonky with a trailer.
