![]() sub signal out question. I have a US 04 forester.
I replaced the 6x9 stock sub in the trunk with an aftermarket 8". Will I get better bass quality if I connect my LOC to the signal from the sub out instead of the rear outs? If so, is it possible to bridge the LOC connection to the sub signal ? I ask because I plan to bridge the speaker wires at the amp? thanks! |

![]() I thought I'd add something to the Aux-in discussions, particularly concerning the rectangular CD changer connector on some newer HUs. I saw a Subaru 6disc head unit on eBay while I was looking for cheap Mazda stock HUs and noticed that it had the exact same CD changer connector form factor.
'9?-'01 Mazdas have a CD changer connector with a very, very, very similar pinout. In fact, almost all the pins are the same - except for a few which are labeled as Not Connected on the Subaru. Miata.net has a pinout. I'd post a link but your forum software won't let me. At any rate, go to Miata.net -> Garage -> Audio -> NB Stereo Interface Descriptions. For the Mazda, all we have to do is set pin 6 (AUX CONTROL IN) to +5v. The display on the radio says "LINE" and the aux input is the only audio source. ![]() I saw that Subaru claims pin F (pin 6) is not connected, but someone ought to confirm that. Mazda uses that pin because they had a factory optional add-on cassette player for these stereos that needed a simple trigger. The Mazda radios are also built by Matsushiiita/Panasonic, BTW. It sounds like the line-in is always on for your stereos, so you might just try using the System Mute pin (pin L). |

![]() Yes, you can add an amp and sub with your stock sub still working. Yes, I've seen many people with double din dvd units right in dash. You will still be able to use the stock sub with that as well.
P.S. Better put on your flame suit with that user name |

![]() On this new USA '07 2.5i MT5 Wagon, I intend to replace the head unit with an Alpine 9856 or Pioneer 4800/5800, both of which are available with dedicated subwoofer output and control. I'm hoping that this approach will provide a stereo sub signal condensed safely into a mono output for the single factory OEM sub my car came with. I know bass is generally not panned strongly to the right or left channel, but in rare cases it is.
Does someone have a moment to answer these few questions? 1. Will a speaker-level output be sufficient to run the OEM Subwoofer? 2. Some owners with aftermarket head units that have no dedicated sub outputs just tap off of one of the main speaker outs to run the sub, is that still a sensible alternative? 3. The factory radio seems to tap off a front speaker output. Is that true? Would that be just one, left or right, rather than some combination of both? I think some combination might cause an inappropriate right/left signal cross. 4. One owner tapped off the front left for his subwoofer output. Was that a good choice? Thank you for your time and expertise. This forum is great and I've already learned a lot from everyone! ![]() |

![]() Follow-up:
As it turns out, the factory radio powers the OEM sub off of the front speakers - both of them. So there must be an internal signal combiner that permits both the right and left channels to send bass to the sub without it crossing the channels. |

![]() doesn't the factory hu have an active eq that decreases bass as volume is increased...this automatically is bad - get a Fosgate 3sixty or something if you keep the factory hu to clean the curve

![]() Is it possible to power just the OEM sub driver with an aftermarket amp coming off an aftermarket head unit with sub pre-out and sub control by circumventing the OEM sub amp completely - basically, hand wiring directly to the OEM sub driver?

![]() Yes you could, but why? An aftermarket amp is going over power the stock "woofer" and you will probably kill it rather quickly.

![]() How do you reset a stock HU in an '04 WRX? My battery was dead for a while and now the HU will not turn on at all no matter what I try.

![]() Is there any way to recalibrate the volume control in the 06/07 head unit? On my '02, a comfortable listening level for FM radio was a volume setting between 10 and 15. On my '07, it's closer to 30. Both units have the same 40-step volume scale.
