how thick on the brackets are you guys going to keep the tablet flush with the back of the dash? can anyone bust out a tape and give me the total thickness including brack + cork? I want to fab two new brackets for mine and can't seem to get the pressure right.

XBMC for android seems to be coming along well
http://lifehacker.com/5977061/unoffi...lier-interface

i've used XBMC for years on my htpc. it might make a good front-end for car media

i'd love to see an official XBMC release. would also love to know the thickness of support bracket + cork, and confirm 12v to 5v USB charger people are using, as well as what USB to micro USB these guys bought that is keeping them 100 charged.

everyone in a position to help, left :-/

I am running a 3" AUX cable, and a 6" USB cable. The 12v to 5v makes no difference as long as its the 3a version. Minimal cable length = less of an impedance based on the Nexus 7 forums.

Bracket thickness is negligible, seems like you need more cork or think out side of the box a bit more. Try taping the back of the tablet to the AV panel better so it stays flush.

Switching to CM10 and an Undervolted Kernel could further provide less power usage - which would result in positive charging.

he lives! i do have the tablet taped to the back of the panel right now. 1.) I don't want to keep it that way. Phoenix summers guarantee this will be a poor solution when the in-car temp climbs to 160F+. I was hoping someone might be able to just bust out a measuring tape and measure from the back edge of the bracket to the front edge of the cork piece since I can't seem to find any locally that won't require some cutting to size to make them work. if your brackets are working, and we have the same dash and the same tablet... your measurements sure would be helpful to have so that i know how much to trim off of the cork pieces.

thanks for the info on the usb. do you happen to have a link to the one that you're using? mine, even at 3' i fear is too long to charge properly. i suppose i could cut/strip/solder a shorter one, since i've already hacked up 1 usb cable to keep the under the armrest USB port usable on the new HU.

WOW This guy has solved all our problems

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2103183

TRICKS
- use Fiio E10 usb dac link
- auto power-on if usb charger connected, even if battery is empty and device is off link proved
Code:
fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0
==> sets device to auto power on instead of charging
Code:
fastboot oem off-mode-charge 1
==> sets device back to original setting

- if you want to make your own OTG usb cable you have to short pin 4 (ID) and pin 5 (GND) on micro usb side link
(this is usb standard, some sources tell to take a 100k resistor instead of short circuit for charging through otg cable)
- i think you will be able to cut the uplink cable from a usb hub and solder a micro b usb plug, short pin 4+5 for otg and solder a power supply simultaneously to pin 1 (VCC) and pin 5 (GND)

I don't see how you could use that camera and charge the device at the same time.

Wireless cameras seem more ideal but maybe thats just me.

If you read the supporting topic, that guy is installing a hub and otg cable. Along with custom Kernel, and power mod.

But then comes the question on juice.

Hey everyone, I am a bit late to the thread, but last night I was thinking about doing exactly what has been done in this thread. Great information all along the way. The reason I wanted to mount my Nexus 7 in my WRX is for additional gauges and OBD data. There is an Android App called Torque Pro that shows data from the OBD2 port through bluetooth. This app allows you to build custom themes to get the exact layout you want to see. I have an http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004KL0I9I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A10EAPE4CAYC9P that I use with this app.

I wanted to share this info with everyone to hopefully inspire some more ideas and additions to this project.

Here are a few pics of an install from Torque's website:

I have ordered all the necessary parts to mount this to my dash. Will show pics when done.

Wow, super impressed after a week of using the new 12v to 5v converter. It's either the 3A output, or the (much) shorter cable length; either way, my N7 has been 100% charged for over a week now, even after -20C cold nights this week. Success!

Also yes Torque + ELM OBD2 reader is pretty neat. Only thing is, I discovered the OBD2 reader is "always on", even with the car is switched off. The reader is always broadcasting over BT. I wonder if this could drain the car battery if left in the car 24/7?

Here's what I did to get the thickness right (very unscientific):

- Make bracket from aluminium, and screw in car.
- Take the two pieces of cork, make a little roll of duck tape, and tape them to the bracket.
- Put N7 in place, and try to close the bezel. Look at how close it is.
- Remove the cork pieces, and dremel them down however you think is needed.
- Put them back on the bracket with the tape, and re-attempt the fit. If it's still too tight/doesn't fit, repeat the process, until the N7 fits

i actually only drive my car a couple times a week, sometimes not even at all in a week, and mine has been fine so far

Under GPS + Music usage, what is power widget reporting usaage (Absolute).

I was able to get +540 mA charge under heavy usage after switching to the new OTG Kernel, that supports fast charging through OTG cables.

That +540mA being the (Total charge - usage)

link to the kernel?

sounds like it's time to root mine and try a different kernel, and maybe CM10 as well.

onsit are you running CM10? i seem to recall seeing that somewhere. perhaps i misread.

curious thing - i've been getting 0mA charge or ~-50mA charges for a few weeks now, except for on my drive to CA on Friday to drop the step-daughters off with their dad for the weekend. had about 53% charge when we left. watched movies the whole time and when we arrived in Blythe, CA (i'm in Phoenix) i was at 94%.

perhaps the duration with which i am spending driving on a normal basis (about 2 hours a day, about 1 hour each spurt) isn't enough to get it really charging? i still haven't shorted my right angle, fabbed new brackets, or touched it otherwise in about a week and a half now.

the plati-dip is starting to bug me. impossible to keep clean. i'm betting i lose patience with it and strip and paint it.

hmm i wonder how good the Asus 7" tablet will be at $150
http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/13/a...elly-bean-and/

i'm still following this thread since i've still considering the possibility of doing a tablet install in my forester.
i used to have a nice carputer in my impreza with a 7" liliput touchscreen. i currently have a pioneer avic z140bh, but it actually has a LIMIT on the amount of music you can hold on an SD card or USB hdd. its like 250 folders and like 2400 songs or something like that. the OS is terrible and the touchscreen isn't very responsive hehe.

so far your installs are going pretty well and i prefer a tablet OS that is customizable, and a very nice responsive multitouch screen

Saw this review and thought about all you intrepid people:

http://reviews.cnet.com/power-device...-35560414.html

A possible solution to your charging issues?

I have a question for you Nexus 7 users...do any of you know of a good keyboard or keyboard case for it? I am buying my wifey one soon and she will use a keyboard for typing notes in class.

for those of us that need more storage.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...words=wi-drive

i'm looking into options LIKE this, but i don't like that i have to play back the files through their app, and that it can't be used while it's charging. i do like that it can bridge my FoxFi connection on my phone, though.

on the charger = with it being in the dash (the nexus 7 that is) i don't want cables going external to charge. additionally, i don't want to tie up a cigarette lighter port with my tablet. this is a permanent install for me, and going that route would not only look bad but functionally for me it doesn't work well. sounds like a cool product though, would work for someone not doing a permanent install i think

on the nexus keyboard/case = i have no idea. haven't looked into it.

Might wait a few months to see what the next gen tablets come out. I hear samsung is going to pop out a 1080p screen and quad core (probably with sdxc too which is huge imo although I still want a fm tuner).
