How to DIY: DRL Disable
First off, I KNOW there are a bunch of How-to/ DIY threads on disabling DRLs but i never came across one that actually had good pictures. Sorry but pictures work for me and im sure it will help others out alot.
Second, give credit where credit is due. The thread below is where the most instructions made sense to me but not enough pictures. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ht=drl+disable Last, i am not responsible for anything you do to your car. Now to start the DIY.... This should work on all 02-07 Subaru WRX's DRL = Daytime Running Lights Why do we want to disable them? If your going to run HID's in your headlights, you need to disable the DRLs. My main reason is because i think it looks stupid to have lights on ALL THE TIME. Especially during the day. There are also times where i WANT to drive with my lights of to not be seen. There are 2 parts that need to be disconnected, there is a DRL unit in the engine bay and a plug that needs to be disconnected behind the glove box. You could disconnect either one and be done to have DRL's disabled, but disconnecting both will completely disable DRL's. First off, the engine bay. Picture is a bit close but you will find the DRL unit on the passenger side shock tower. A bit closer, the circled plug is what you will be disconnecting. You can either unplug it here and leave it mounted incase you want to have DRL's again or you can remove the unit completly. If you choose to remove the unit completely the unit is held in place by 2 10mm bolts. After removing the bolts and the unit from its place i found it easyer to unplug it from the harness. Unit removed completely Part 1 complete

Part 2
Going to the passenger side of the car, beside the glove box is a plug you need to disconnect to complete disabling the DRLs. If you could see through plastic the DRL plug would be right about here Now, you can take 5 seconds and shove your hand in that space to disconnect it or you can take 5min removing your glove box. Up to you. The plug that needs to be disconnected 5 seconds later... And you are done! |

I had no need to remove the DRL module itself, I just unplugged it from the glovebox area. Why did you need to remove the module?

I just tried to do this and my car looks neither like aerosaaber's nor insane_one's. Unless the DRL plug is farther up under the dash, closer to the outside wall. I can see 5 plugs, none of them is plugged into a black box. Gonna check my service manual. Can anyone help me? Sorry for no pic, can take one to clear this up if needed.

Yep, it's farther up under the dash than i thought. My gorilla hands didn't quite fit so the glovebox came out. On the plus side, the cabin filter is really easy to replace. Man was it dirty. |

I highly doubt I would have found it with the glove box in, and if I did, it would have taken more time then to just unscrew the glove box. |

I did read the whole thread and searched the site as well. I figured since this thread is generically labeled and has no specific years I would keep things organized and post here. If you wanted it to just pertain to 02-07 WRX's maybe include that in the thread title? I already looked for all the plugs shown and they do not seem to exist on the 2012 Impreza. I pulled the large DRL relay out of the main fuse box but that kills the high beams as well. The search continues......

The engine bay DRL unit seems to be referred as an injector resistor a lot on the interweb. I did search the wiring diagram and it is actually the DRL resistor and has nothing to do with injectors, so don't be afraid to remove it and save a bit of weight
Reference for those who want to double check: On the 2004 STI service manual, page WI-135 show that there is a DRL resistor and it is connector B5, on page WI-175 you have the confirmation of where the B5 connector is. |
