whether they keep the current design or change it, it does not matter to me. If they do change it though, current wrx owners will have the first generation american WRX, plus a unique look to go with that. If the current look stays, atleast people who are not familiar with subarus will know we have the same car and wont try to show us up.

Morrets are ugly. It looks rice, even though projector headlights are nice.
The Dutch pic flattens the hood out so much it doesn't even look like a Subaru, and the fogs in the middle of the bumper look like a Ford truck. Eby's pic looks quite aggressive (gold wheels turned to the side, bigger scoop, and the wing help) It would be the best edit to the design if they change it.... which I hope they don't. Unfortunately, you loose the fog lights below the bumper line... which is what I think makes the WRX looks like the WRX. UK300 lights look Ficher Price and are more ugly than the stock lights. The two pics above eachother (imprezzard): The top one looks like a mercedes light and the second one looks JUST like a VW Golf light. All in all, the bug eyes (which I adore) differentiate the WRX from the hondas, acuras, toyotas, and all the cookie-cutter designs. Who said our headlights have to be rectangles? You know who has bug-eyed lights? Porsche. I agree though the light from the stock lights is weak, so I hope for the JDM projector HIDs as an option or standard. |

If they change it, it will be minor maybe we will get the JDM headlights and the new grill, beyond that I wouldn't hold my breath.

Agreed. While its sales here in the US have far exceeded expectations, sale around the world have dropped significantly. So the face lift is justified.

You have to look at not just WRX sales, but
Impreza sales in general in the US. Its a bread and butter product, and sure, people will buy the WRX w/ its turbo & rigid chasis no matter what it looks like here, but there's also the core group of Civic/Protege/Corolla buyers that Subaru has to get as well for the NA 2.5 models. So there's a lot more at stake here than the 10-20,000 WRXs they sell. |

Great looking!
Where did you find that image? I've never seen it before. Other than the ugly wing, this is what the WRX should have looked like. The front fenders have a softer, more graceful contour; much like that of the soon-to-be-released new Mercedes E-Class. The grille and front bumper are much better integrated. I like the taillights too. I noticed the Subie oval logo on the rear deck, rather than the word "SUBARU."
This is much better looking than the current WRX. Bob |

ugh, that pic is OK, but they're changing the wrong things.
taillights - Ok, not bad, but looks like a Kia now, but that pic looks better headlights - NEED TO GO. but they're the same...ugh bumper - good on current model, they're just trying to make it look more like a V6 bumper there wing - looks like off an EVO Interesting pic...if there's any truth to it...I'd say they're going the wrong way with the redesign. The biggest complaint about the current car is the headlights. Mh_wrx - Yes, sales are down around the world. |

And the main reason we here that sales are down are because of the new design. Well, we can see why there is such an urgency for the redesign.

For whatever reason, many people have complete apoplexy at the sight of the WRX's oval light housings. There are several things wrong with all the patches, redesigns, and aftermarket headlights that scramble by any means to avoid the oval shape.
Primarily, the entire top half of the front end of the WRX, all the way back to the A-piller, incorporates the shape of the headlight housing. The entire area between the red and yellow lines is completely dependent on the shape of the headlight housing to integrate the shape of the entire front end. If you change the shape of the headlight housing, either physically or with camouflage, the cure is worse than the disease -- a non-integrated bulb that runs the entire length of the hood on each side. Problem number 2 is the oval seam left by the various "cures" (the green line in this image) which serves only to draw attention to the fact that the design has been hacked in a not very designerly manner. Of all the aftermarket "solutions" to the oval issue I have seen, not one of them is an improvement for the complete car. It is just different... nothing more. --scott |

I agree with you 100%. Which is why I think the redesign should incorporate a change in the hood/fenders/headlights.

I also agree with UCI_Scott. The biggest problem with the wrx is not that the lights are oval, the problem is that they stick up too far. The line of the fender is too high, which compromises and masks the slope of the hood, and makes the car look too squarish in profile. The slope of the hood on the GC8 emphasizes the compactness of the boxer engine, and the '02 body should do the same (as the picture from the japanese magazine shows).
Most of my friends whom I've asked about the car hate the new body style of the sedan. They like the wagon a little better. Tim |

I like the recent picture (not the morettes, the Japanese scan). It lays the headlights back into a more Porsche-esque plane. Which simply transforms the front end in a way that's hard to appreciate except in a picture. I think if Subaru did this, they'd have quite a few happy customers. It retains what I like about the ovals while looking less like a Neon. And it probably is more aerodynamic too.
I don't neccesarily agree with any other changes in the picture (wing, taillights, wheels, or even the fog lights, but I think the fog lights are "interesting" and deserve additional thought). Just for kicks I photochopped morettes to remove the telltale circular seams from the hood and bumber. I did it on one side just for comparison. When this is done I think it is clear that what you are left with is the old '97 headlight style. I suspect people in love with the morettes are simply missing the old style headlight (which I agree is good looking, but rather dated/generic). |
