Help me pick a 2012 mid size SUV
We are looking to trade the 2010 Mazda CX-7 in for another mid size SUV. Would like to be around the mid 20k price range. Any suggestions? So far the Equinox & Outlander look good.
What we need: -good gas mileage -safety -room & comfort -reliability We have the 2012 WRX for the fun stuff, the SUV needs to be reliable, safe and offer good gas mileage. I've never bought a domestic vehicle before, but the Chevy does seem very nice. Any input is welcome!

You should get one with 4 wheels and 4 doors. Those are sweet.

We bought a Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
If you can find a 2012 model or later, they get 29city/29hwy. Pretty good for a 3 row vehicle. Skip the nav system option and put in an aftermarket one. Other options include Honda Pilot and Acadia/Enclave/Traverse from GM. We used to have an Acadia and loved everything about except the stereotypical GM reliability. Considered buying another one but they had gotten more expensive. Honda is *very* very proud of the Pilot. We looked at out of warranty used ones that were more than base model new ones. In my opinion, both Honda and Toyota are way behind the Acadia/Enclave in terms of customer oriented features. Also....are you sure you need an SUV/CUV? If you aren't towing a boat or heavy camper you might consider a Honda Odyssey. They are great at converting from people mover to cargo. And they get better mileage than the Pilot. They are usually cheaper and are more family friendly. Last edited by f4phantomii; 05-02-2012 at 12:42 PM. |

I would cross shop Ford. They seem to be beating Chevy in basically every catagory IMO.

Need more info. How many kids? What sorts of activities? City or highway driving (those heavy CUVs tend to not break out of the teens in city driving)? What sort of FWD, AWD, 4WD requirements?
Lacking that, I'm going to suggest a 2.5L Outback with CVT. |

For the OP, I wasn't impressed with the Pilot. Ride quality was so-so, it was relatively noisy on the highway and the transmission was lazy. Also, no air vents for the 3rd row. Could get rather toasty back there. If it was a touch larger we wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy an MDX. Awesome interior, drives amazingly well, etc. The only drawback is the 3rd row is useless...noticeably tighter than the Pilot (which was already small). And, like the Pilot, no air vents for those stuck in the back. Forgot to add that we both found the interior of the Highlander kind of cheesy. I don't know, something about the design doesn't seem upscale at all with the large silver knobs and such. I guess we both expect more given its not exactly cheap. We also looked at the Ford Explorer/Flex. Explorer looks great on the outside. Interior is also nice but there should be more space given the size of the vehicle. Getting in and out of the 2nd/3rd row was also tough due to the shape of the rear doors. The Flex feels more spacious inside and access to the 2nd/3rd row is excellent. Drives pretty well too. But I didn't care for the interior design. The plastics are a bit hard and everything is a bit "square". I guess it just matches the exterior design. Finally, an important consideration was comfort. In the Acadia/Traverse, we both were immediately comfortable in the seats. MDX was also excellent. All the others required some adjustment but still didn't feel quite right. So the point is, all these vehicles are nice in their own way. Find the one that suits you best. Honestly I don't really think you can make a bad choice. The CX-5 is woefully underpowered. Other than that, I really liked it.
My vote would be a 2013 Edge or 2013 Escape. Im personally waiting until either the CX-5 gets the diesel, or the 2013 Escape trickles out with the 1.6L Ecoboost motor. Also, there is no ****ing way Id consider anything from GM. |

Yep, if he doesn't need a 3rd row of seats.

This is going to be the wifes daily driver. I drive the WRX.
3rd row is out, nothing good in the price range. 2 kids, me and the wife.. Everyone else can find a ride elsewhere. No more mazda, i'm already trading in a 2010, what does that tell you? The more I think about it, the more I'm likely to buy a CR-V or perhaps a RAV4 and call it a day. The outlander is out, the interior sucks. I want peace of mind, reliability, safety, comfort and good gas mileage. This is our practical car. |

Also, since a lot of powertrain components are shared between the CX7 and Escape, i'm not keen on Ford. I was told there is a rear main seal leak on the CX7 during my last oil change. The transmission and power delivery are not confidence inspiring on the 2.3T, I feel like something is going to break all the time.
Seriously, can you really go wrong with a CR-V or RAV4? Honda reliability, extended warranty, good to go, yah? |

Definitely a WTF on that one.
Replace CX7 with Tribute and you've got something. |

Which trim level did you guys get? The Mazda Motorsports pricing is fairly attractive, which would be one thing to sway me towards the CX-5. |
