My commute takes me through one of the lousiest places to drive (Jersey City) so I recently bought this cheap little camera:

http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_2...ghcBoCJIPw_wcB

I took it for a test drive today and it does the trick, though in a disorganized, haphazard way. For instance, it only records 3-minute chunk of AVI's, so I'd have to stitch the files together to make a complete movie.

The individual file thing is common and actually helpful, IMO. No one wants to see your whole commute anyway.

I'm heavily leaning towards pulling the trigger on one of the Mobius Black Box cams. It doesn't have a screen, but in many ways I think that's better. It's more optimized for automotive use than the other Mobius action cams - it powers on with the vehicle and has motion detection mode for parking, not 100% sure if it will need a capacitor to run hardwired. It also has a ~2 hour long battery life so you can record the police violating your rights long after they've snatched your keys out of the ignition.

Mounting spot would be the bottom of the mirror to keep it off the windshield. I'll probably go for the wide angle version just because.

Any reason I shouldn't buy this type?

Obviously I'll need some miscellaneous accessories with it. Max I'm looking to spend is $150.

The other cool thing is the separate "CRASH" folder that the camera created when the suction mount fell off. This camera must have lots of neat features to it, but I can't understand it because it's all in Chinese.

I have both a Möbius action cam (Black Box is a vendor) (I think I'm supposed to use an umlaut here) and a g1w:

Möbius pros:
-small, discrete
-can be used as an action camera- attached to RC vehicles, handlebars, helmets, other erect things
-battery might last for an hour, maybe
-can be configured with Windows software to do things

Möbius con:
-when powered by USB, gets hot enough to burn
-battery starts bulging after a few months of usb power, may catch fire
-capacitors fix the above, but the cam has to be configured to shut down immediately after USB power loss.
-no screen. hooking up to a police cruiser to zoom in on a plate sucks

g1w pros:
-cheap
-has screen. don't know how to use it (see cons)

g1w cons:
-all instructions and menus are in Chinese, and translated docs are in Engrish
-my microphone has failed, most of the time, so OT can't hear my dope song selections and cussing
-is obviously a dashcam, which may get more attention from people who see themselves being filmed as a negative

The portability and discreteness of the Mobius mostly wins. I kind of want something with better power handling in a discrete form factor that will stay on for a while after I park.

Thanks for the writeup. I'm not really worried about police encounters, but it would still be nice to have it keep rolling after the car is off. How does using the capacitor affect parking/motion detect mode?

I really want it to be as discrete as possible and that's what drew me to this one. A lot of people really don't like to be recorded like you said, even if it's in public and entirely legal. I'd also like to stay away from windshield mounting and I don't think my dash is going to be much good either so the bottom of the mirror spot looked great.

Bottom of mirror would create a huge blindspot at road level, IMO. I very much like having mine on the windshield, tucked to the right of the mirror at a similar level.

/me hates blindspots and would not create one willingly

Tucked behind the mirror may be a possibility as well. This is what they show on Amazon:

Tucking the wires obviously then becomes the concern, but I'd be willing to pay someone to do that if need be.

Why don't you want it on the windshield? I doubt anyone even notices them on cars when they're mounted close to the mirror. With the TL you even have that gray dotted area that can hide some of the body.

I have the LK-290 by Lukas, you can wire up any cams (really any 12v device) to stay running off the car battery until it hits a programmable voltage.

almost seemed like it was just sitting there, but could have been in reverse regardless (hence the backup lights)..

otherwise don't click..nothing to see there.

I've got a LK-290 on my dash cam for both my cars. The crappy issue I'm running in to is the cameras restart every time I turn the car back on. y u no stay on during crank!?

Hmm really? I don't think I've noticed that, although I can't say I pay much attention to it (I will now). Is it from the voltage drop during cranking? Is yours set to voltage cutoff (if so what voltage)?

Voltage cutoff is set to, I think, 12.0V. I'll have to double check, but I'm fairly certain it was 1 above the lowest setting (which I think was 11.8V). I think the issue is that my dash cams are cheap and their batteries are dead. I have OjoCam Mini 0801 in both of my cars. Thinking about changing them to something different.
