"Developers will need to be mindful of potential power consumption spikes that could impact clocks and lower performance"

So really just 8.4TF in normal mode which developers will focus on.

Sorry yall, Sony is getting stomped this teim, as far as I can tell. Maybe want to wait for the refresh.

Ala xbox one. Ahh how the tables have turned.

Have they come out publicly with how many c.u.'s are in the graphics chip?

If they are more than a couple behind, they can't make up for it with memory bandwidth.

PS5 GPU has 36 CU, which is equivalent to 58 PS4 CUs.
What the heck is a CU?

Uses AMD smartshift technology to send data from the CPU to the GPU if there is capacity.

GPU frequency capped at 2.23Ghz so it doesn't overpower the CPU.

Thwap!

Good luck to Sony being more important to AMD than Microsoft, though. Thanks for giving them the idea about playing favorites with partners.

Maybe gaming would be better with a bit of fairness, no?

I'm sure that's easy enough, looking at history.

At least they've invested in it, otherwise.

Looks like Sony wins again. Go home Xbox fan boys.

MS looks to take the advantage in all the tech specs that matter to today's gamer, but Sony have been killing it with their first party games, and games really are more important than specs. Especially when those first party games are built specifically to take advantage of the hardware it's running on. Brute force power is great for third party games, which are obviously the bulk of releases, but first party games are what moves consoles and provides unique experiences.

Looks like I'll be buying both yet again.

Wonder if exclusives could break contract? And do both consoles?

Jamie seems to can easily. Not for me. I'd much rather see and end to all this "professional" sniping.

If they both have the same manufacturer, it doesn't have to be so, inharmonious.

Alas, if they can't agree. Or, maybe it's more than that?

The thing is that a lot of Sony exclusives are built by Sony owned studios. So that would likely never happen for those titles.

Microsoft picked up some heavy hitting studios for their own exclusives recently. It'll be exciting to see what they have coming down the line.

Third party studios could, I suppose but I wouldn't bet on first party ones doing that. You're not going to see God of War on the Xbox, nor Forza Horizon on the PS5. You could see Ori and the Will of the Wisps on the PS4/5 though and you should hope you do because it's ****ing fantastic.

I enjoy the experience of multi-platform gaming. First party titles that take advantage of each platforms unique intricacies are what makes gaming interesting to me. If consoles were just a toaster to play third party bread, I fear some of gaming's soul would be lost in the process.

I want to get Will of the Wisps, but apparently my processor doesn't meet specs. I think the clock is slower than it is required to be. It's an old i7.

I have it on the X and unfortunately, unlike Blind Forest, it's not a rock solid 60fps. I get some frames dropped once in a while but visually it's also doing so much more than it's predecessor.

'Playstation 5 will see near instantaneous loading.'

Xbox will take twice as long.

I think this will end up being pretty much null. With the saving feature Xbox is talking about.

Except, maybe, online?

Wouldn't surprise me if Sony, a year or two (or 3) released another "Pro" system like they did with PS4 that has beefier specs.

The difference will be pricing though won't it

If Xbox has the Series X at $550 or $599 (wasn't there speculation that the would be a series S with specs similar to a XBox One X at a lower price ... maybe $399) and PS5 is $499 that could sway a lot of decisions.

I have no idea if the raw numbers up above translate to a clear winner ... or if there's a noticeable difference in the end. A strong MS and a strong Sony mean strong competition ... and in the end, the consumer should theoretically benefit regardless

I love new console transition years ... the wait is almost better than the new product. Watching fanboys on both sides is half the fun. If both companies knock this generation out of the park, we're all in for an amazing generation

I watched that whole PS5 reveal video and while I'm glad they didn't feel the need to dumb it down for the unwashed masses (ie me) and I didn't understand at least of half of what was said (or at least how it relates to the final gaming product), I'm still excited for the potential of the new boxes coming at the end of the year (probably)

All this reading reminds me that Nintendo stopped competing in the spec wars after N64.

As I understand it, that presser was meant to be at GDC this year before it was canceled. It was definitely geared towards designers. I think Sonys marketing of it to the casual audience was severally mishandled.

Digital Foundry helps put some of the technobabble into perspective:

My next day take-aways; MS has obviously gone the brute force power route with this console. It's obviously going to perform very well with multi platform games designed to run on conventional hardware. Sony, on the other hand, are looking to shake things up. Their vision to use their significant SSD speed advantage to fundamentally change the way game worlds are designed is huge. Their complicated-ass 3D audio solution is too, if successful. In tandem, these aspects alone set the platform very far apart from other platforms' capabilities in presenting new immersive gaming experiences. Developers who take the time to take advantage of these features are going to provide some seriously cool ****.

That said, most developers won't. Third party parity will keep game design pretty traditional. Those first party games, though, those have the potential to be something really cool and different.
