Subaru Stars Richard Burns Safari 2000 Tribute (safari mirrors)

Hi all,

Registered a couple of years ago, but never introduced myself... My name is Bernhard and I'm from the Netherlands. My passion is obviously Subaru

Just a little bit more about my Subaru:

I bought my standard Subaru (my98) in 2008:

After 4 years I decided to change the car into the well known rally theme. As a fan of Richard Burns it had to be a 'tribute' to him, so this is my ride now:

I got fascinated by the WRC Safari Rally in Kenya (2000), so you you know where this is going... More about this later

I hope to learn more about lifting my GTT, gravel wheels and tyres on this forum!

Regards.

Wow! That's quite a tribute to Mr Burns! Is the transformation more than cosmetic?

I will post some of my projects here in the future.

Last year I started to do 'something' with carbon. I never worked with composite materials in my live before. I thought about making a rally style dash pod, like those in the real railcars with a tripmaster. But I do not need a tripmaster, for me it's still a road car so navigation is more important. Well I got an iPad with navigation apps...you know where this is going now...had to make a pod for my iPad so my co-driver can read the navigation map

After a couple of months work on making a mold, sanding, coating, sanding and more sanding I got this:

As a first trial/error carbon project I was very happy with the result. I have more carbon projects ahead ;-)

So what happens to the screen and box when the passenger airbag goes off in a accident?

Ah good question. My Subaru is a MY98 555 series, it has no dashboard or steeringwheel airbags installed

First Safari update:

Bought a genuine mcrae roobar, used on the Safari rally in Kenya (1998). One of the rare ones in this condition since most of them got crashed or otherwise broken...need to get it repainted though... Richard Burns used the same type of roobar on the Safari 2000 Kenya wich is my tribute to him.

Today I got it mounted on the Subaru. Enjoy the first images:

Thanks you!

@hummelsubaru, WRC rally cars are LHD... I visited Prodrive in UK and asked them why all rally cars were LHD, even when driven by famous Briitish drivers like Colin And Richard. The answer was easy: money. A lot of cars got sold, after use in the WRC, in LHD countries (bigger selling market). Instead of doing conversions al the time they built LHD cars. So I have a little bit of luck on this one

gotcha, cheers mate. its my bad cos RB edition was released in UK back to 1999 which was built for limited numbers. it came with only RHD. so i was confused.

Did some research last week on how to lift my car, that aint easy.
Here a picture to show the differences. I read about mounting Forester coilovers and springs, but I doubt I will ever get as high as the actual safari setup...I think Prodrive dit miracle there:

Any thoughs? Gravel setup is a possibility to go on with...or start if there is a solid base with Forester coilovers...

I thought you all find it interesting when I share some more about the progress of the Safari theming. I'm not just a fan of Richard Burns or WRC. When I discovered the rally's in Kenya I got fascinated by them. Colin McRae won the 45th safari rally in 1997 for the first time with SRT. Richard won the last (48th, Sameer Rally) with SRT as WRC event.

It was the hardest rally event on the list of WRC, most of the cars didn't even finish. WRC took this rally of the calendar duo to conflicts on African continent.

Let's talk about more about the cars. They got equipped with all kinds of special attributes. Subaru lifted the car, added a snorkel for river crossings, mounted a roobar for crossing cattle and lights in the mirrors to warn locals "a rally car is coming". These items are pretty rare...most of them got smashed during the though terrain and accidents.

A few years ago I started looking for these items. Early this year I found a brand new roobar at wrcsparesparts UK. Planned a car holiday from the Netherlands to the UK to collect it. Just a few scratches, no bends or anything:

Finding a carbon snorkel was hard. wrcspareparts does have one, but just before my trip I found one in my own country, also as new:

As you can see this is the upper part of the snorkel. I was told the part on the hood would be hard to find. It would be very expensive to make and Prodrive don't have the moulds anymore. Started to make the part myself, with pictures I made at the Prodrive Heritage Centre UK:

Shaping foam:

Cutting the angle was a little guess, but worked out well (original above):

The polyester resin is aggressive for this type of foam, had to wrap it up:

One layer polyester should be enough:

Sanded, base layer of paint:

Painted it black as basecolor under the carbon, when the carbonfibers are to tight you can see through (you don't want to see white):

Carbon process, prefit cloth:

Cloth ready for gelcoat:

Adding layers of gelcoat, sanding etc:

All done:

Got a set of aluminum rings, I don't have a garage the closed ring is for parked state without snorkel:

I was pretty satisfied with my results, but just as I wanted to start cutting my hood I got news from my contact. He found a genuine hood part! I found my work with polyester and carbon a good practice for other parts.

Still have to add the flexible hose and make the hole in the hood, but this is a preview:

Even got the inner part (which gets on the carbon airbox I have to make):
