Default Porsche 718 Cayman GT4

Porsche was seen the other day in northern Europe while perfecting what will become the range-topping 718 Cayman version taking the shape of the mighty GT4. Positioned above the recently launched GTS, the new crown jewel of the Cayman family appears to be virtually undisguised, thus hinting that an official reveal is right around the corner. Our money is on the Geneva Motor Show set to open its doors at the beginning of next month.

There are quite a few differences between the GTS and the forthcoming GT4, starting at the front where the redesigned bumper hosts enlarged air vents providing better cooling. Right below the hood, on the upper section of the bumper, there’s a wide slat akin to what the 911 GT3 / GT3 RS feature.

Speaking of the higher-end GT3 models from the expansive 911 family, the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter gasoline engine is expected to trickle down onto the 718 Cayman GT4. It will allegedly be detuned, but it should stick pack more than 400 horsepower, so expect a bump in output over the previous GT4 of at least 15 hp. Corroborated with a very probable weight loss, the new iteration of the hardcore Cayman is shaping up to be faster and more agile around the corners than its predecessor.

Getting back to the prototype at hand, the back of the car is also exhibiting some major changes compared to the GTS. The most obvious novelty is the addition of a fixed rear wing, along with a meaner diffuser featuring two large exhaust tips that no longer sit next to each other as they do on the GTS. While the taillights as well as the headlights appear to be virtually the same as those of the GTS, there could be some changes to further differentiate the two models.

We are also expecting to see a re-tuned suspension, bespoke alloy wheels, and upgraded brakes to round off the package and make the GT4 justify what will be a significant premium over the GTS. By the way, the latter starts off at $79,800 in the United States. Considering a base 911 begins at $91,100, some folks will have to make a difficult decision: go with the Cayman GT4 or get a standard 911? Factor in the 718 Boxster Spyder, it will be quite tricky to pick one.

Here is the most important question, will it come with a proper manual transmission?

Good problem to have. As much as the GT4 is the one to have, my (imaginarily wealthy) pampered ass would take the Boxster Spyder for daily use.

I thought the rumor on the Spyder was A/C delete, radio delete, and sound insulation delete to save weight. I presume this transfers to the GT4 too. Thus the cars are slightly better on the track and much worse for daily use. I appreciate the engineering exercise to make a track toy available through a dealership, but it's utterly stupid on a street car. 99% of the people who will buy these cars aren't good enough drivers to notice the weight difference. The 0.1 seconds it will make anyone faster around their local HPDE track is worthless compared to the overwhelming discomfort on a hot summer day without A/C, or a long drive with a lack of sound insulation and radio to cancel out the tire and exhaust drone.

The prior generation at least had A/C from what I can tell. It also lacked the stiffened up GT3-derived suspension of the GT4 from what I recall. /shrug

The rumour is it won't be turned down too much - 425HP to 450HP and PDK.

Default Boxer-six fix for Porsche Cayman GT4

From AUS. News

Quote:
SPY PICS: Boxer-six fix for Porsche Cayman GT4

Purists upset with the demise of six-cylinder Porsche Caymans be heartened: The upcoming 718 series Cayman GT4 looks set to pack a six-cylinder boxer engine displacing 4.0-litres and punching out something in the region of 300kW. The outgoing 3.8-litre six-cylinder Cayman GT4 produced 283kW.

These spy photographs show an essentially undisguised GT4 prototype cavorting in the snow during the European winter. Dual outboard exhaust outlets hint at the six-cylinder powerhouse lurking within. The not-just-for-show rear spoiler looks to be a GT4 carryover, while the overall profile of the rear bumper, including the diffuser aperture, appears identical to other 718 series Porsches. Come production time and that may change, however.

Word on the grapevine suggests the pride of the Cayman fleet will also get revised frontal architecture as well as a reworked rear end. The front end shows there will be some more serious aero work, including way-bigger outer air intakes, while there's also some significant lowering that plays a role in cramming the wheel arches to their limits with oversize wheels and super low-profile tyres. Composite brake rotors and red callipers seen lurking behind the multi-spoke wheels look entirely serious and speak of track-readiness.

It is anticipated that the 4.0-litre engine will be a detuned version of the 368kW boxer six used in the latest 911 GT3 - which is also expected to donate the GT4 Cayman's new six-speed manual gearbox. Even before the four-cylinder 718 Cayman went on sale there were allegations that there would be a six-cylinder Cayman sooner or later.

It's rumoured that the GT4 will also get a suspension makeover to lift its potential above that of the outgoing car, while also helping deal with the extra power. Scuttlebutt concerning the possibility of Porsche's dual-clutch PDK gearbox being on the GT4 options list is also doing the rounds.

Speculation differs, but sources are saying the new Cayman GT4 won't arrive on overseas markets until the end of 2018, or maybe early in 2019. The latter would seem plausible for Australia.

Default orsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport Flaunts Big Wing During Monza Test

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport Flaunts Big Wing During Monza Test

Could feature a bigger 4.0-liter flat-six engine.

Porsche had the Monza track all to itself earlier this week and aside from testing its new 911-based race car, it was also seen putting through its paces an update for the track-only Cayman GT4 Clubsport. We still haven’t seen the road-going version in official shots, yet testing is already well under way for its race car counterpart set to arrive after the regular model.

Despite the extensive camouflaged applied onto the racer’s body, it’s already pretty obvious the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport will feature an enlarged wing to boost downforce at the rear axle. Since we started with the car’s derrière, one can also see the redesigned diffuser hosting the two exhaust tips that no longer sit together in the middle as these have been moved further apart from one another.

The taillights will also be going through some changes in line with those of the refreshed Cayman GTS. As for the tweaks at the front, these are less noticeable, but some novelties must be hiding underneath the swirly disguise.

Like the road-going 718 Cayman GT4 spotted mid-February without any camo, its race car alter ego is expected to feature a larger naturally aspirated engine with a bump in displacement from 3.8 to 4.0 liters. The previous pair of GT4 models borrowed the engine from the 911 Carrera S whereas the new ones are rumored to source the powertrain from the beefier 911 GT3. The attached spy video allows us to hear the PDK at work, while the road model – believed to get the RS suffix - will allegedly get a six-speed manual to the delight of purists.

While the previous Clubsport was capped at just 400+ examples, Porsche has already announced plans to broaden the race car’s availability. Speaking with Sportscar365 earlier this year, the company’s GT motorsport boss Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, admitted:

“We did not really cover the demand worldwide [with the first version]. We did not really push in sales; it was a new category and we see a huge demand now around the world, in the Clubsport series and also in emerging motorsports markets like China and Thailand.”

Walliser went on to mention it’s going to have more power than the previous 380-hp version and will also boast additional downforce depending on what its road-legal sibling will feature. The 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport will receive its customer debut at the beginning of next year. Meanwhile, the world premiere of the road version is likely slated to take place in the latter half of 2018 when Porsche could also decide to come out with the hardcore 718 Boxster Spyder.

Default New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 tipped with flat-6, available DCT

Fans of the manual gearbox, rejoice! Porsche seems keen on ensuring that pure driving pleasure remains a core competency of its upcoming 718 Cayman GT4.

However, for buyers after the speed and ease that only a dual-clutch transmission can offer, Porsche looks to have them covered as well.

CAR reported Thursday that the new Cayman GT4, which is currently doing the rounds as a prototype and has already been revealed in race car form, is due to arrive in July at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom. We'll likely see it in showrooms shortly after as a 2020 model.

The magazine also reported that the car won't employ turbocharging as other 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman variants do. Instead, it's almost certain the track-focused Cayman GT4 will be powered by a naturally aspirated flat-6 engine.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport race car
2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport race car

Impressively, peak output will reportedly hover around 420 horsepower, up from the 385 hp of the last Cayman GT4. Not only that, but the new car may even wear the coveted RS badge, reserved for Porsche's most hardcore models.

Expect the 0-60 mph time to approach 4.0 seconds and the top speed to lie somewhere above 180 mph. The last Cayman GT4 would hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and top out at 183 mph.

As mentioned above, a DCT option is said to be coming, though perhaps not at the launch. This ties in with previous comments from Andreas Preuninger, head of GT car development, that Porsche feels it isn't the brand's place to tell customers what transmission makes a driver's car.

The new Cayman GT4, like its predecessor, will likely turn out to be a true collector's car. This will especially be true if Porsche goes ahead with plans currently being discussed about converting the 718 line to electric power.

Default The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Won't Get the Clubsport's 3.8-Liter Flat-Six

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Won't Get the Clubsport's 3.8-Liter Flat-Six
Porsche's newest race car uses an old engine. That won't be the case for the upcoming 718 Cayman GT4 street car, and that's a good thing.

Porsche
Yesterday at Daytona, Porsche finally showed off the new 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport race car. The road-going 718 Cayman GT4 isn't here yet, but the Clubsport gives us a very good idea of what the eventual street car will look like. We also spoke to Porsche's head of GT Customer Motorsports, Matthias Scholz, to get more info.

One of the biggest surprises of the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport was that it uses the naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six as the old GT4 fit with a new intake manifold to raise horsepower from 385 to 425. This engine went out of production a few years ago when the 911 Carrera S switched to a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six. It was a surprise to see it make a comeback, but as Scholz detailed, it makes sense for racing.

"A customer who knows the 981 generation [GT4 Clubsport]—everything technical about the car because they've learned it for three years now—can carry over their knowledge to the new car," Scholz said."The next thing is that we have very, very good experience with the engine from the 981. It's very robust, so why change it?"

Mercedes-AMG did something similar with its AMG GT3 race car, using the old 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 from the old SLS, rather than the 4.0-liter twin-turbo from the road car. But you're probably wondering what's going to power the 718 Cayman GT4 road car.

It won't be the 3.8-liter—Scholz told us it's only for the race car. After all, this engine hasn't been in production for a while, and it's doubtful that it meets the most recent emissions regulations. But, speaking to our colleagues at Car and Driver in 2017, Andreas Preuninger, head of GT road cars at Porsche Motorsport confirmed that Porsche has no intention to go turbo for the Cayman. That leaves one possible engine for the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport—the 4.0-liter flat-six used in the 911 GT3. It makes 500 hp in the GT3, though we have to imagine it'll make less in the GT4, just to keep the hierarchy in place.

If you watch spy videos of 718 Cayman GT4 street cars testing at the Nürburgring, based on the sound, it seems pretty clear that the car will offer a manual gearbox. As before, the race car will get a PDK gearbox, and there's good reason to believe the road car will too. Porsche offers both in the 911 GT3, and the strategy has paid off, particularly in terms of sales. Plus, Preuninger has said he wants to continue this strategy in the future. Offering a choice of transmissions will certainly be a good way to increase 718 sales, which haven't been too hot as of late.

There's also a persistent rumor that Porsche will offer a more track-focused Cayman GT4 RS, too. This one's a little bit harder to suss out, but it'd certainly be cool to see.

As for why Porsche decided to do the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport before the road car? There are a few reasons.

First is that the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series kicks off at Daytona on January 25th. With increased competition in this series and new cars from a host of manufacturers, Porsche wanted to get the new 718 Cayman racing in 2019.

Second, Porsche's Motorsport department is quite small. Scholz told me that development of the road and Clubsport versions of the 718 Cayman GT4 is quite closely aligned, so the engineers there are stretched quite thin.

Third is that Porsche wants to get some miles in the race car while it finishes up the road car. The 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport brings some big aerodynamic changes over its predecessor, and Porsche wants to test those in competition to apply their learnings to the road car.

As for when we'll see the 718 Cayman GT4 road car? Scholz just tells me it'll be sometime in 2019. Looks like we'll have to wait a little bit longer.

Porsche sales are more than double what they should be, if you chart sales vs the Fed-induced stock market bubble.

Will be real interesting when that pops.

Default 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Quote:
The most radical Cayman to date is set to break cover at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is an upcoming high-performance version of the company’s smallest coupe yet. An upgrade to the GT4 model from a few years back, the GT4 RS is the most radical version of the 718 Cayman yet.

Ever since the first GT4 was announced, enthusiasts have been asking themselves whether Porsche will take things up a notch and develop a GT4 RS. But despite favorable rumors and the fact that an RS version would make sense, a more powerful GT4 has yet to happen. This willd change at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed when this street-legal racer is set to break cover. And even though there’s no confirmation whether it will be called the GT4 or GT4 RS, the new coupe will definitely pack a significantly beefed-up engine. So I’m tempted to go with an "RS" badge.

Updated 03/27/2019: Our spy photographers caught the production version 718 Cayman GT4 testing at Nurburgring. The car is expected to make its world debut at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Glad to see them taking more "chances" (Pfft, it's a Porsche, it'll sell) on the Cayman. It deserves it.
