timing belt replacement cost?
I would like to know what people are paying to have the timing belt & water pump replaced on a SOHC 2.5L engine.

??$$ DIY, is always the best price. The belt and pump are going to run close to $300. |

I think that's a subjective question, but:
Labor would be variable anywhere from 3-6 hours at $75/hour $225-$450 Subaru Water Pump: $88 Subaru T-belt: $59.95 ----------------------------- Total: $350 - $600 would be my guess. And then you might as well replace the seals... -Charles- |

Any idea about the cost if a Subaru garage did the job?

They're going to charge the going rate for labor. Usually they have it posted, it's somewhere in the $70-80 /hr region.

My dealer quoted 5-$600 for the T-belt alone and another $100for the WP. I bought a " NEW" Bosch water pump at PepBoys for 49.95 and an OEM belt for $69.95 or 59.95 and did the job myself with the help of a friend (who has a better back than mine). I also carefully checked all the idlers, oil pump and seals for leakage. I replaced the thermostate, coolant hoses and drive belts at the same time. I used ALL OEM parts except the WP and the complete job was about $190. You mush be machanically inclined to do this job as it is not a good place to practice. Go to www.endwrench.com and they have a file on how to do it correctly.

The Bosch water pump is fine after a year and ~20K miles. I figure it is about 2 hours work for the whole thing. Add in a front crank seal while doing it and check the cam seals before starting. |
