Default Unusual Chrysler Fix for Jeep Fires Wins Approval

Quote:
Chrysler can go ahead with an unusual recall plan affecting 1.6 million Jeeps, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said late Friday. The plan involves the use of a trailer hitch intended for towing to reduce the danger of gas tank fires in rear-impact crashes.

The recall covers 1993-98 Grand Cherokee and 2002-7 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles that have the gas tank behind the rear axle, an unconventional location that the safety agency says makes it more vulnerable to punctures in a rear-impact crash.

In the Friday statement, the agency said it had “been in close communication with Chrysler and has no reservations at this time with their announced actions to move forward.” The agency did not, however, say what gave it confidence in such an unusual use of trailer hitches.
The details of the investigation will be included in a formal, closing report that should be finished in several weeks, Nathan Naylor, an agency spokesman, said in a telephone interview.

One of those details is expected to be whether the agency conducted crash tests of the hitches, a recommendation made by officials from both the Center for Auto Safety and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Even while proposing the trailer-hitch remedy last year, Chrysler said there were limits to what it would do. In a June 18 letter, Chrysler told the safety administration that the hitch would only “incrementally improve the performance” in “certain types of low-speed impacts.”

A top Chrysler executive, who was in charge of engineering when the first Grand Cherokee was designed, has expressed doubts about a protective role for the trailer hitch.

“The tow package does not protect the tank,” Francois J. Castaing, Chrysler’s vice president for engineering in 1988-96, said in a 2011 deposition that was part of a wrongful-death suit.

The federal investigation was prompted by a formal request in 2009 by the Center for Auto Safety. Friday night, Clarence M. Ditlow, the executive director of the center, wrote in an email that it was “tragic” that the safety agency had approved “Chrysler’s sham trailer hitch recall for Jeeps that explode in rear impacts.”

In a letter to Chrysler last June, the safety agency said it was aware of 51 deaths in rear-impact crashes that had resulted in fires. But the Center for Auto Safety said its research had found 161 deaths in 115 crashes.
On Friday, Chrysler issued a statement that it “commends the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the diligence demonstrated over the course of this investigation.”

On the previous generation Wrangler the rear bumper is lower that the front bumper. Apparently this has helped in not having to include it in this recall modification as the gas tank seems to be better protected from the type of rear end collision where both vehicles are nose diving due to hard braking.

I have no idea. Honestly other than the initial cringing reaction, I've left well alone. Shes the kind of person that knows everything about everything and considers herself a better driver and an informed vehicle purchaser. Because I once totaled a car she thinks shes a better driver than me too but is the type of person that drives 30mph slower than everyone else if there is a snow flake in the air, or wont drive at night because its more dangerous and she cant see as well. I let her be and sit back and wait for the inevitable misfortunes that come her way that are miraculously everyone elses fault.

Wait,

Let me compose myself..

<just breath>

She bought a liberty again, AFTER buying one initially? Was the first one bought for her? A gift maybe. A cruel joke gone wrong.

I once heard somebody bought another trailblazer, but it was just rumor like Sasquash or a toll road being paid for.

The recall covers 1993-98 Grand Cherokee
What about the 99-04 Grand Cherokees? They had the same low hanging rear mounted tank as the ZJ and KJ.

Sell it. The Liberty is a horrible vehicle.

An ex leased one and I had the joy of driving it.
