Exclamation What Is Wrong With This Car??

My buddy has a 02 WRX Impreza w/Manual Transmission. He has the typhoon intake, the ebay ssautochrome bigger topmount, stock turbo, turbo back exhaust, NO EM, stock injectors, RFL BOV and he just put on a STI Manifold. It seems like as soon as he put on the STI Manifold ON his car is running like crap. It's idling at 1500 rpms, as soon as the car is warming up it's blowing huge puffs of blue smoke clouds out of the exhaust and when he goes to accelerate the car shakes hella bad like it's stalling while he tries to excell. Did he miss something huge that he was suppose to do when he got the STI manifold to fit because it seems like as soon as he installed that the car went FUBAR..!!

that's what we thought too, so went over everything, we even thought it was his turbo, so we tried 2 other newer, but stock turbos and the problem still exsists. I really think it has something to do with that STI manifold but he just wont believe thats why.....

STI manifold = WRX manifold
except the red wrinkle paint

You installed something wrong. Blue smoke usually means oil, I think. And EM is very necessary with cars run by this much technology.

make sure all your vacuum lines are right
make sure you dont have a leak between the manifold and tgvs (you cant reuse those gaskets)
make sure you have the pcv in the right spot

Otherwise bacttrack every step you did installing the manifold and voila

Pinched a gasket on the runners. Replace em and you should be okay.

Wrong place to post this to start (Try 2.0 Powertrain next time) and 2nd of all, engine management is a MUST.

Maybe you should be helping your friend get rid of the car instead of fixing it with the list of mods that you gave although surprisingly I didn't see BOV listed.

Make sure you check for vaccum leaks as well. Get some brake cleaner and spray around the manifold. If the RPM's go up, voila, vaccum leak. Sounds like your problem isn't vaccum related, however.

as others said EM is def needed for the mods listed, well if the friend cares about his car...

Apparently your friend likes to waste money on useless crap. Are there any CEL's? Have you guys tried removing the sti manifold and putting the original back on....try that, see what the results are. Personally I think a line isn't hooked up correct.

I dont see how any of the previous 5 responses were of any help to this guy (yay for people posting to help thier rating, he didnt ask about BOV if he wants it let him have it... he didnt ask about EM)... It really does sound like a vauum leak though, cause the RPM are hovering around 1500, even after its warmed up. Just confuses me how a vacuum can cause you to burn oil (blue smoke). so next step would be the gaskets.

ok I have heard a few things about this before as well. Make sure the gaskets are on the car correctly. Also make sure there is no leaks at the intake.

He asked what's wrong with the car.. No EM + BOV + Intake = what's wrong with his car.

Now, why it's blowing blue smoke? I don't know, that's probably something wrong with his install.. not the car itself.

This is what happens when you bolt on all sorts of stuff and don't mess with the EM.

Let this be a lesson to all of you who are thinking of doing the same.

In short, he needs to have the car professionally tuned.

I would bet by your response you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. And FWIW the OP should have asked, "What ISN'T wrong with this car?"
